  • Reds' Nick Martini: Clobbers pair of homers

Martini went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a two-run home run during Thursday's win over the Nationals.

Martini filled the DH role against right-hander Josiah Gray and delivered home runs off the aforementioned Gray in back-to-back innings. He was responsible for driving in five of Cincinnati's eight runs on the day. Although it's unlikely Martini etches out an everyday spot in the Reds lineup, he'll have the opportunity to force the team's hand with a hot start during TJ Friedl's (wrist) and Matt McLain's (shoulder) IL stints.

  • Reds' Frankie Montas: Impresses in Opening Day win

Montas (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings and allowed four hits and no walks while striking out four in Thursday's win over the Nationals.

While the Nats offense isn't expected to light MLB on fire this season, Montas going six scoreless in Great American Ballpark is a noteworthy accomplishment -- especially after logging a 5.94 ERA this spring. Although Montas doesn't have the stuff he had in prior years, he should be in a solid position to succeed if he can keep walks allowed to a minimum. He'll likely have a tougher time in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Phillies.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Opens in outfield

Steer started in left field and went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Nationals on Opening Day.

Steer was part of a productive lower-half of the order, which combined to go 8-for-19 and was responsible for all eight runs and RBI. He qualifies at multiple positions, but the offseason plan was to use him primarily in the outfield. Steer led the team in home runs (23) and RBI (86) last season while stealing a fantasy-helpful 15 bases.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Scores twice in opener

Fraley started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored in Thursday's 8-2 win over Washington on Opening Day.

As usual, Fraley got the start with a right-hander throwing for the Nationals. The left-handed hitting outfielder had just 41 plate appearances against lefties in 2023. Fraley can be useful in a less-than full-time role, as evidenced by the 21 stolen bases he had last year in 111 games.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Starts at second base

India started at second base and batted leadoff in Thursday's 8-2 win over Washington on Opening Day. He went 1-for-4 with a walk.

The Reds' planned second baseman, Matt McLain, injured his shoulder during spring training and underwent surgery Tuesday. He was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday, which means India, who was training for a utility role, is expected to have a steady home for the first two months of the season.

  • Reds' Matt McLain: Moves to 60-day IL

The Reds transferred McLain (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.

A move to the 60-day IL was expected for McLain, who figures to miss the first half of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery Tuesday. He will temporarily give up his 40-man roster spot, which will be given to Yosver Zulueta, who was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays on Thursday.

  • Reds' Yosver Zulueta: Claimed by Cincy

The Reds claimed Zulueta off waivers from Toronto on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville.

Zulueta struggled during spring training, surrendering six runs over five innings while striking out two batters and walking four. He'll find a spot on Cincinnati's 40-man roster anyway and head to Louisville to give the Reds some extra organizational bullpen depth. Matt McLain (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Mike Ford: Back with Reds

Ford signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Ford failed to make the Reds' Opening Day roster despite having an incredible spring, but he will return to the organization on a minor-league pact after testing his options in free agency. The 31-year-old slashed .228/.323/.475 across 251 plate appearances with the Mariners last season and could spend some time in Cincinnati if his bat stays hot in Triple-A.

  • Reds' Elly De La Cruz: Batting sixth in opener

De La Cruz will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Thursday's season opener against the Nationals.

De La Cruz hit second often for the Reds this spring and manager David Bell had indicated that's where he was leaning toward putting the youngster. However, the skipper ultimately settled on Will Benson in the two hole and De La Cruz lower in the batting order. It's not great news for De La Cruz's immediate fantasy prospects, but he's certainly capable of hitting his way up higher in the lineup.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Batting second Opening Day

Benson will start in center field and bat second in Thursday's season opener against the Nationals.

Manager David Bell indicated previously that Elly De La Cruz could be in the two hole at the beginning of the season, but it will be Benson there while De La Cruz is down in the six spot. Bell's lineups could be fluid, but if Benson sticks in the second spot against righties it would be a nice boost to his fantasy outlook.

  • Reds' Nick Martini: Starting in season opener

Martini will serve as the Reds' designated hitter and No. 8 batter in Thursday's season opener versus the Nationals.

At least against right-handed pitching, Martini looks like he'll get the first opportunity to fill the lineup spot that was opened up by TJ Friedl (wrist) and Matt McLain (shoulder) beginning the season the injured list and by Noelvi Martin serving an 80-game suspension to begin the season. Though the Reds' logjam in the infield and outfield is alleviated to some degree by those absent players, the lefty-hitting Martini will still likely need to find some early success against right-handed pitching to ensure he sticks in a strong-side platoon role. Over 361 career plate appearances versus righties, Martini has slashed .288/.380/.449 with eight home runs.

  • Reds' Sam Moll: Placed on injured list

The Reds placed Moll (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Moll was sidelined for most of camp due to a shoulder impingement and isn't ready for the start of the regular season. The left-hander was able to make his spring debut last week, and he could join the Reds when first eligible in mid-April .

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Shifts to injured list

The Reds placed Williamson (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

The left-hander exited his March 17 start with a left shoulder strain and won't be available to begin the regular season. Williamson was expected to be shut down from throwing for a few days, but it's unclear where he currently stands in his recovery. Andrew Abbott is rounding out Cincinnati's rotation, at least until Nick Lodolo (lower leg) is ready.

  • Reds' Nick Lodolo: Officially lands on IL

The Reds placed Lodolo on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left calf tenosynovitis.

Lodolo's stay on the IL shouldn't be much longer than the 15-day minimum, as he's already slated to pitch two games on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville and will likely make his regular-season debut when eligible in mid-April. The 26-year-old southpaw appeared in two Cactus League games this spring, surrendering one earned run over 4.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking two.

  • Reds' Alex Young: Moves to injured list

The Reds placed Young on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with low back disc degeneration.

The left-hander has been destined to begin the campaign on the injured list after he suffered a setback with his back injury in mid-March, and that transaction is now official. It's unclear how long Young is expected to be sidelined, but he won't be eligible to be activated until the second week of April.

  • Reds' Bubba Thompson: Joins big-league roster

The Reds recalled Thompson from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was optioned to Louisville in mid-March but ended up earning a place on the Opening Day roster after he posted an .828 OPS in 15 games during spring training. Thompson should serve as a reserve outfielder with TJ Friedl (wrist) set to miss the first month of the season.

  • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Placed on 15-day IL

The Red placed Gibaut (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Gibaut's move to the IL is backdated to Monday, meaning he will be eligible to make his season debut beginning April 9. The 30-year-old righty has been dealing with a strained forearm for most of spring training, and it's unclear how far along he is in his throwing progression.

  • Reds' Matt McLain: Placed on 10-day IL

The Reds placed McLain (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

McLain underwent surgery on his left shoulder Tuesday and a timetable for his return remains unclear. Although it is still possible he plays this year, fantasy managers shouldn't expect the 24-year-old to return to the field until at least the second half of the season. Jonathan India will likely assume the role as Cincinnati's primary second baseman while McLain is out.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Placed on injured list

The Reds placed Friedl (wrist) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Friedl's fractured right wrist will cause him to miss the first month-plus of the season. However, it's worth noting that the Reds put him on the 10-day IL rather than the 60-day list, suggesting that the 28-year-old outfielder may be targeting the shorter end of his initial 6-to-8-week recovery timeline. Bubba Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.
