  • Rays' Jose Siri: Hits bench for second straight

Siri is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Siri missed time over the weekend after he was in considerable pain due to a kidney stone, but he rejoined the lineup for Monday's 7-1 loss to Detroit, starting in center field while going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. According to Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun, Siri still hadn't passed the kidney stone as of Monday, so the Rays could be electing to limit him out of an abundance of caution while he's still dealing with some bodily discomfort. Though he's out of the lineup for a second straight day, Siri should still be available off the bench. He entered Tuesday's 4-2 loss as a late-inning defensive replacement and struck out in his lone plate appearance.

  • Rays' Tyler Alexander: Won't start, but should pitch Wednesday

Alexander is no longer scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers, but he's likely to pitch in bulk relief while Shawn Armstrong serves as the Rays' opening pitcher.

Though Alexander operated as a starter his last time out Friday against the Yankees and struck out four over 5.1 scoreless innings, he looks set to appear out of the bullpen for his upcoming turn through the rotation. Working in bulk relief isn't anything out of the ordinary for Alexander, who previously tossed six innings of two-run ball behind Armstrong in an April 14 win over the Giants. The arrangement should put Alexander in better position to be credited with a win, if the Rays are able to come away with a victory in the series finale versus Detroit.

  • Rays' Shawn Armstrong: Opening Wednesday's contest

Armstrong will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Armstrong will draw his third "start" of the season, but he hasn't recorded more than six outs in any of his eight appearances and is unlikely to work more than once through the batting order, if that. Manager Kevin Cash hasn't outlined his plans for once Armstrong exits the game, but Tyler Alexander is available on his standard four days' rest and will presumably operate as a bulk reliever after tossing 5.1 scoreless innings in his last start Friday against the Yankees.

  • Rays' Isaac Paredes: Swats sixth homer

Paredes went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Tigers.

He supplied the Rays' only offense by taking Alex Faedo deep in the sixth inning. Paredes is having a strong start to the season, slashing .274/.361/.512 through 23 games with six homers and 16 RBI, but he'll need to keep producing to hang on to his starting job at third base with top prospect Junior Caminero lurking at Triple-A.

  • Rays' Ryan Pepiot: Delivers quality start Tuesday

Pepiot came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Tigers, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.

The 26-year-old right-hander produced his second straight quality start and third in five outings this season, tossing 52 of 80 pitches for strikes. Pepiot left the mound in line for his third win with Tampa out front, 2-1, but Colin Poche blew the save in the eighth inning. Pepiot will take a 3.77 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 31:10 K:BB through 28.2 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come early next week in Milwaukee.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Out of Tuesday's lineup

Siri is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Tigers.

Siri returned to action Monday after not starting two of the previous three contests due to kidney stones, but he will be back on the bench to begin Tuesday's proceedings. Randy Arozarena will shift over to center field and Richie Palacios and Amed Rosario will handle the corner outfield spots.

  • Rays' Mason Auer: Back from wrist injury

Auer (wrist) was reinstated from the 7-day injured list at Double-A Montgomery on Tuesday, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports.

The 23-year-old landed on the shelf in early April with a wrist injury, but he's now healthy and back on Montgomery's active roster. Auer struggled at the affiliate last season with a .205/.292/.349 slash line and 35.9 percent strikeout rate in 123 games.

  • Rays' Brandon Lowe: Takes modest step toward return

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Lowe (oblique) has started swinging a bat and fielding ground balls, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Lowe landed on the injured list April 12 with a right oblique strain but doesn't appear close to being activated, despite having been able to take part in some baseball activities. Curtis Mead and Amed Rosario will likely continue to share work at second base in Lowe's absence.

  • Rays' Taj Bradley: Set for rehab assignment

Bradley (pectoral) is expected to report to Triple-A Durham later this week to begin a rehab assignment, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Bradley threw 62 pitches across four innings in an extended spring training Monday. He emerged from the outing without issue and is now likely set for a couple of rehab appearances before being activated from the injured list. He's been on the shelf all season while recovering from a right pectoral strain suffered late in spring training.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Smacks second homer

Caballero went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Monday against the Tigers.

Caballero has made his mark with seven stolen bases across his first 22 games this season. However, he swatted his second homer of the campaign against Shelby Miller in the eighth inning, and he now has an extra-base hit in each of his last three games. Caballero has a clear path to playing time for the foreseeable future, as Taylor Walls (hip) has been shut down from baseball activities and is ineligible to return from the injured list until late May.

  • Rays' Zack Littell: Yields five runs in loss

Littell (1-1) took the loss Monday against the Tigers, allowing five runs on nine hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out seven.

Littell allowed a solo homer to Mark Canha on the third pitch of his start Monday and never seemed to recover. Despite surrendering five runs, Littell managed to generate 15 whiffs and match his season high in strikeouts with seven. The 28-year-old starter sports a 3.33 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 29:5 K:BB over 27 innings. His next start is scheduled against the White Sox on the road.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Throwing in extended spring game

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Baz (elbow/oblique) will soon throw two innings in an extended spring training game, Evan Closky of 10 Tampa Bay reports.

Baz has already completed his rehab for the Tommy John procedure he underwent Sept. 28, 2022, but the right-hander wasn't available to pitch at any point in spring training after tending to a pair of oblique injuries. The Rays haven't shifted Baz to the 60-day injured list at this point in the season, but it would still be a surprise if he's ready to make his 2024 debut before late May. A timetable for his return remains up in the air and won't be clear until he heads out on what will likely be an extended minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Rays' Taylor Walls: Shut down for 10-to-14 days

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Walls will be shut down from baseball activities for 10-to-14 days due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip, Evan Closky of 10 Tampa Bay reports.

Walls was shifted to the 60-day injured list over the weekend after suffering a setback in his recovery and won't be eligible for activation until late May.

  • Rays' Jonny DeLuca: Could be ready for rehab games soon

Manager Kevin Cash said Monday that DeLuca (hand) could be ready to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham later this week, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Reports last week suggested that DeLuca was still experiencing soreness in his fractured lower right hand, but he's evidently made improvements since then. DeLuca hasn't played in a game since March 10, so he'll likely be in line for an extended rehab assignment figures to take a little while. Once he's ready to return from the 10-day injured list, he could be a mainstay in the Rays outfield against left-handed pitching.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Rehab assignment coming soon

Manager Kevin Cash said Aranda (finger) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham later this week, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Aranda had the pins removed from his surgically repaired right ring finger a week ago, and he looks to be nearing a return to game action. The 25-year-old has been sidelined for the past month, so he'll need a good number of rehab at-bats before being activated from the 10-day injured list. Aranda had been in line to serve as the Rays' primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching before getting hurt.
