Nationals' Stone Garrett: Shifts rehab to Triple-A
Garrett (ankle) went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts Wednesday in his first rehab game for Triple-A Rochester.
Garrett shifted his rehab assignment to Syracuse after going 7-for-26 (.269 average) with seven walks, two RBI, two runs and one stolen base over his eight-game stint with Double-A Harrisburg. The 28-year-old made six of his eight starts with Harrisburg in left field, so he should be an option for the Nationals at DH or in the corner outfield when he ultimately returns from the 10-day injured list. Garrett produced an .800 OPS over 268 plate appearances with Washington in 2023 before undergoing season-ending reconstructive surgery on his left ankle last August.

Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Will see playing time at first base
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Lipscomb will play a good amount of first base as Joey Gallo shifts to right field, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Gallo has been the team's regular first baseman, but he will receive reps in right field now with Lane Thomas (knee) sidelined indefinitely. Lipscomb will play multiple positions, per Martinez, but he is starting at first base Wednesday in Atlanta and could receive the lion's share of starts there for the time being. The 23-year-old posted a .563 OPS with one home run and four stolen bases over 14 games with the Nationals earlier this month.

Nationals' Joey Gallo: Shifting to right field
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gallo will play right field while Lane Thomas (knee) is sidelined, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Washington will let Gallo get his feet wet in right field right away, as he'll occupy the position and bat fifth Wednesday against the Dodgers after having previously not made a start in the outfield all season while instead playing first base or serving as a designated hitter. Gallo has won multiple Gold Gloves for his defensive work in the outfield, so he's a sensible solution in right field. Trey Lipscomb is slated to see ample action at first base during Thomas' upcoming absence, while Joey Meneses will also be an option there.

Nationals' Lane Thomas: Dealing with Grade 2 MCL sprain
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said that Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier Wednesday with a Grade 2 MCL sprain and is without a timeline for a return, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Thomas sustained the injury in the fifth inning of Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers and was diagnosed with the MCL sprain after getting an MRI. The outfielder was walking around without the aid of crutches Wednesday and acknowledged that he expects to avoid surgery, according to Andrew Golden of The Washington Post. A timeline for Thomas' return could come into focus once he resumes baseball activities, but fantasy managers should prepare for the outfielder to be sidelined beyond the minimum 10 days. Martinez said that Joey Gallo will get the first chance at replacing Thomas as Washington's primary right fielder.

Nationals' Jacob Young: Takes seat Wednesday
Young is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Young produced three hits over the Nationals' last two games to lift his season average up to .267, but he still looks to be stuck in a part-time role in center field. He and Eddie Rosario have now drawn three starts apiece at the position over a stretch of six games.

Nationals' Lane Thomas: Hits IL with MCL sprain
The Nationals placed Thomas on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with an MCL sprain of his left knee.
Thomas sustained the injury in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers and will be eligible for activation May 4, but given the nature of the knee issue, he'll likely need more than the minimum 10 days to make a full recovery. The Nationals called up infielder Trey Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move, and he could end up garnering regular starts at third base and serving as Thomas' de facto replacement if Washington is willing to move Nick Senzel off the hot corner and deploys him in the outfield or at designated hitter more frequently. After a breakout 2023 campaign in which he hit .268 with 28 home runs and 20 stolen bases, Thomas had slumped out of the gate with a .184/.250/.253 slash line with two home runs in 22 games, though he remained active on the basepaths (11 steals in 12 attempts).

Crews is presumably dealing with some sort of lower-body injury if the rainy weather played a role in him not playing Tuesday. The 22-year-old outfielder is slashing .244/.326/.415 with two home runs and two steals in 10 games this season.

Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Joins team in Washington
Lipscomb has joined the Nationals' taxi squad and could be called up from Triple-A Rochester prior to Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Outfielder Lane Thomas is getting an MRI on his left knee after exiting Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers, and the expectation is that he'll require a trip to the injured list. There's no word yet on the results of the MRI on Thomas' left knee, but it sounds like he's bound for the IL even if the club gets good news. Thomas was injured during Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers while stealing second base in the fifth inning. The 28-year-old has started every game in right field for the Nationals this season. Joey Gallo has seen his playing time slip a bit recently but might get some run in right with Thomas out. Trey Lipscomb is expected to take Thomas' spot on the roster.

Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Blanks Dodgers in no-decision
Corbin came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers, allowing three hits and three walks over 5.1 scoreless innings. He struck out three.
The 34-year-old lefty put together his best performance of the young season, tossing 50 of 86 pitches for strikes and exiting with a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Nationals' bullpen quickly coughed it up. Corbin remains winless in 2024 with an 0-3 record, and his 6.51 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 27.2 innings don't offer much fantasy appeal even as a streaming option. He'll try to keep building momentum in his next start, which lines up to come this weekend in Miami.

Cavalli (elbow) touched 96 mph during a 60-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Cavalli is working his way back from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in March 2023. He should be cleared to face hitters next, with a rehab assignment soon to follow. Cavalli could eventually be an option for the Nationals' rotation, but he's on the 60-day injured list and will need plenty of time in the minors first.

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Starting rehab assignment
Ruiz (illness) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Ruiz will be with Harrisburg for a couple days before being activated from the injured list, likely on Friday when the Nationals begin a road trip. He hasn't played in two weeks due to a stomach bug which caused him to lose nearly 20 pounds. Riley Adams has been filling in as the Nats' primary catcher.
