ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) TJ Madlock scored 13 points and Alabama State scored the last six points of the game to beat Mississippi Valley State 54-51 on Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference opener.

Arecko Gipson hit a 3-pointer for Mississippi Valley State for a 51-48 lead with 30 seconds left. Alabama State's Eric Coleman then split a pair of free throws, Madlock converted a three-point play and Amarr Knox finished the game with a dunk.

Madlock shot 3 of 11 from the field and 6 for 11 from the line for the Hornets (6-8, 1-0). Isaiah Range scored eight points and added seven rebounds. Ubong Okon had six points and finished 3 of 4 from the floor.

Donovan Sanders led the way for the Delta Devils (0-14, 0-1) with 11 points. Rayquan Brown added 10 points, 11 rebounds and two steals for Mississippi Valley State. In addition, Gipson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Both teams play again on Monday. Alabama State visits UAPB and Mississippi Valley State hosts Alabama A&M.
