The 2022-23 college basketball season is in the books. So now it's time to look ahead to next season, and the team that will start at the top of the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 is the same one that finished this season holding the sport's best trophy.
UConn is No. 1.
It's a ranking based on the Huskies returning five of the top six scorers from a team that won the national championship and finished No. 1 at KenPom.com — specifically everybody except Jordan Hawkins, who is a projected lottery pick and thus expected to enter and remain in the 2023 NBA Draft. Could Andre Jackson or Adama Sanogo also follow Hawkins out the door? Yes. But neither is a projected first-round pick. So, for now, I'll assume both will be back in UConn jerseys next season.
Needless to say, these rankings will change over and over again throughout the offseason as players announce their intentions to transfer or pursue professional opportunities. Last offseason, there were 18 different editions of the Top 25 And 1 before things tipped off in November. I suspect this offseason will be similar.
As of this moment, the biggest question marks are connected to Gonzaga's Drew Timme and Kentucky's Oscar Tshiebwe, each of whom is an All-American with eligibility remaining and less-than-great NBA Draft stock. Timme has indicated he's done with college basketball — but there's some thought that he could change his mind considering the NIL money he can make with the Zags might exceed whatever money he can make professionally next season. Tshiebwe is in the same boat. For now, I'm projecting Timme to leave college but Tshiebwe to return. If those assumptions prove wrong, I'll adjust accordingly.
