  • Eagles' Kenneth Gainwell: Becomes backup to Barkley

Gainwell is poised to operate as the backup to Saquon Barkley, who slated to sign a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles, Eric Edholm of NFL.com reports.

Gainwell looks set to remain Philadelphia's No. 2 running back, but instead of backing up D'Andre Swift (who is set to join the Bears on a three-year, $24 million contract), he'll look to complement an established, true three-down workhorse in Barkley. That could spell less opportunities for offensive touches for Gainwell, who tallied career-high marks with 84 carries for 364 yards and two scores in 2023, but he should retain quality value as an insurance option behind Barkley. Gainwell's versatility makes him a solid depth option for Philadelphia, though the team could still add further reserves to the backfield.

  • Eagles' Kenneth Gainwell: Small steps forward in third season

Gainwell rushed 84 times for 364 yards and two touchdowns in 16 regular-season games, adding 30 catches for 183 yards.

Gainwell's carries and yards both represented career highs, albeit not by huge margins over his 68 carries for 291 yards as rookie in 2021. He also saw his workload get scaled back significantly after his first two games, as he averaged four carries per game the rest of the way after rushing 14 times in both of his first two contests. It's unlikely he suddenly becomes the lead back for the Eagles next season.

  • Eagles' Kenneth Gainwell: Leading rusher in Week 18 loss

Gainwell carried the ball seven times for 62 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Giants.

D'Andre Swift (illness) wasn't healthy enough to suit up, so Gainwell got the start in the backfield for the Eagles and led the team in rushing yards while also setting a season high, topping the 54 yards he picked up back in Week 1. Swift should be back for Philly's playoff opener, a road game in Tampa Bay in the wild-card round, bumping Gainwell back to a depth role.

  • Eagles' Kenneth Gainwell: Looks poised to start Sunday

Gainwell was the first running back to take reps in pregame warmups and appears set to start in Sunday's game against the Giants, Josh Tolentino of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

With lead back D'Andre Swift (illness) inactive, Gainwell could be poised to challenge for double-digit touches out of the backfield for the first time since Week 3, when Swift hadn't yet fully established himself as the No. 1 option. The Eagles have Boston Scott and Rashaad Penny available in reserve, but the former has mostly been relegated to special-teams duties in recent weeks, while the latter has been a healthy inactive for much of the season. Gainwell has enjoyed some level of success as both a runner (career 4.2 yards per carry) and pass catcher (career 5.3 yards per target) over his three seasons in the NFL, and the prospect of a three-down workload could make him an enticing fantasy option in Week 18.

  • Eagles' Kenneth Gainwell: Another six touches in Week 17

Gainwell rushed twice for five yards, reeled in all four targets for 15 yards and completed his only pass for 17 yards during Sunday's 35-31 defeat to the Cardinals.

Gainwell remained in a complementary role behind the Eagles' top running back D'Andre Swift, getting out-touched by his teammate, 14-6. His 20 yards from scrimmage also marked his second fewest in a game over the last six contests, but Gainwell did connect with DeVonta Smith (leg) on a 17-yard gain, marking the first official pass of his three-year career. Considering his workload of 5.4 touches per game since the team's Week 10 bye, Gainwell will be tough to trust for production Week 18 at the Giants.
