Musgrove produced a fairly lackluster line, but it was his second quality start of the year. He coughed up all three runs in the first two innings before settling in for a decent outing. The 31-year-old righty still hasn't found a groove in 2024; Musgrove is sporting a 6.29 ERA with a 20:11 K:BB through 24.1 frames. He forced just six swinging strikes Monday, tying his lowest mark of the year. Musgrove is currently in line to face the Blue Jays at home this weekend.

  Musgrove (1-2) was handed the loss Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five. All of the damage against Musgrove came in the fifth, as he surrendered a solo homer to Yan Gomes to open up the inning, then gave up a walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. While Musgrove was pulled at that point, he was stuck with three earned runs as reliever Stephen Kolek surrendered a grand slam to Christopher Morel on his very first pitch. After finishing each of the last three seasons with an ERA below 3.20, Musgrove's ERA sits at 6.87 through four starts. He's allowed at least four runs in all but one appearance and will look for improvement Monday when he's projected to start against the Brewers.

The Padres handed Musgrove a five-run lead before he even took the mound for his season debut, but the right-hander was unable to hold the Dodgers at bay. Los Angeles struck for a run in each of the first two frames before chasing Musgrove in the third. While San Diego still went on to win, this was certainly not a promising beginning from an individual perspective for Musgrove, who got to only 60 pitches (38 of which were strikes) before he was removed. Musgrove's season was cut short by a shoulder injury last year, and he gave up nine earned runs in six innings during spring training, so questions will remain about lingering impacts of the injury until he begins to look better on the mound.

San Diego's new skipper revealed that Musgrove has already thrown some bullpen sessions and even faced some hitters and has bounced back with no issues. The veteran right-hander missed the final two months of last season with right shoulder inflammation and also dealt with elbow bursitis earlier in the year. Musgrove was highly effective in 2023 when on the mound, collecting a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 97:21 K:BB over 97.1 frames. It's certainly encouraging that it looks like he'll enter spring training with no limits, but Musgrove will remain a health red flag going into 2024.
