  • Jose De Leon: Hits free-agent market

De Leon (elbow) elected free agency Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. De Leon had been removed from the Twins' 40-man roster and has decided to hit the free-agent market rather than accept an outright assignment. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July and will miss most, if not all, of the 2024 campaign.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Gets elbow surgery

De Leon (elbow) underwent successful season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday along with additional procedures on his arm, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. The Twins didn't go into detail on what the other procedures entailed, but De Leon was apparently diagnosed with more than a torn ligament in his right elbow after the team announced just under a month ago that he would require season-ending surgery. The Tommy John surgery is the second of De Leon's career, as he previously required the operation in 2018. In addition to missing the rest of the current season, the 30-year-old right-hander will most likely be sidelined for the entire 2024 campaign, as well.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Requires Tommy John surgery

De Leon is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery after he underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a torn ligament in his right elbow, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. De Leon already underwent Tommy John surgery once back in 2018, and now he'll have to take another year-plus off as he recovers from his second procedure. He finishes 2023 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 17.1 frames and likely won't return until late in the 2024 season, if at all.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Goes on IL with flexor injury

The Twins placed De Leon (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right flexor strain, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. De Leon left Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Tigers with pain in his elbow while making a warm-up pitch. He's set to undergo an MRI and seems likely to miss more than the minimum 15 days.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Will be placed on injured list

De Leon (elbow) told reporters after Saturday's game he will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. De Leon will also undergo an MRI on his elbow, but he told reporters that he immediately knew there was something wrong and felt an "electric shock" while throwing a warm-up pitch. The Twins will likely place him on the injured list prior to Sunday's game against Detroit, likely alongside a corresponding roster move.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Leaves with injury

De Leon left Saturday's game versus Detroit with an apparent injury, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. De Leon picked up the injury while warming up, and immediately ran off the mound. The right-hander will likely undergo testing to determine the severity of the injury.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Pitches 2.1 scoreless innings

De Leon did not factor into the decision Saturday, pitching two scoreless innings against the Tigers while not allowing any hits or walks. He struck out two. De Leon opened the game for Minnesota and was highly effective over his 2.1 innings of work, striking out two while not allowing a runner to reach base. He did basically all of his damage using his four-seamer and changeup and was part of a strong bullpen effort overall in shutting out the Tigers on the afternoon. The reliever had surrendered three runs over his last 2.1 innings coming in (over two appearances) but now holds a very solid 3.38 ERA on the season after Saturday's scoreless appearance.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Will open Saturday's bullpen game

De Leon will serve as the Twins' opening pitcher in a bullpen game Saturday versus the Tigers, John Shipley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. De Leon will likely pitch an inning or two before turning the game over to the rest of the Twins' relief corps. The right-hander has been a productive member of the bullpen since coming up from Triple-A St. Paul in mid-May, logging a 3.86 ERA and 15:4 K:BB in 14 innings.

  • Twins' Jose De Leon: Lands deal with Minnesota

De Leon signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Tuesday, which includes an invitation to spring training, the pitcher announced. The former top prospect has dealt with major health and control issues but has missed bats consistently when on the mound.

  • Blue Jays' Jose De Leon: Debuts at Triple-A

Triple-A Buffalo reinstated De Leon (shoulder) from its 7-day injured list Sunday. De Leon, who had been sidelined since spring training while recovering from the right shoulder injury, pitched out of the bullpen Sunday for Buffalo, covering 0.2 innings while allowing two unearned runs on one hit. The 30-year-old righty has seen spot action in the big leagues in five of the past six seasons, but his extended absence coupled with his lack of a 40-man roster spot means De Leon is unlikely to get the call to Toronto in September.

  • Blue Jays' Jose De Leon: MRI yields good results

De Leon (shoulder) underwent an MRI on Tuesday that revealed no structural damage to his arm, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. The clean MRI is an excellent development, albeit a somewhat unexpected one after De Leon looked to be in significant pain after spiking a pitch into the ground during a relief appearance in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. Though he's not dealing with any fractures or ligament tears, De Leon's shoulder issue could still be problematic enough to keep him from throwing for several days, effectively ending any chance he might have had of making Toronto's Opening Day roster.

  • Blue Jays' Jose De Leon: Dealing with shoulder issue

Manager Charlie Montoyo said De Leon suffered a right shoulder injury during Monday's spring game against the Tigers and is being evaluated by the medical staff, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. De Leon was down in some pain after spiking a pitch during Monday's appearances, and the specifics of the injury remain uncertain. The 29-year-old is in camp as a non-roster invitee after posting a 8.35 ERA over 18.1 innings for Cincinnati last year.

  • Blue Jays' Jose De Leon: Exits Monday with apparent injury

De Leon tossed just two pitches Monday in his Grapefruit League appearance against the Tigers before departing with an apparent right arm injury, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. The Blue Jays will likely send De Leon in for X-rays and possibly an MRI before providing a diagnosis of his injury, but he looked to be in considerable pain while bouncing a pitch to home plate during Monday's appearance. De Leon is attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee and is hoping to win a spot in Toronto's Opening Day bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Jose De Leon: Reaches MiLB deal with Jays

The Blue Jays signed De Leon to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. He'll presumably get the chance to compete for a spot in the Toronto bullpen this spring, but the 29-year-old is more likely than not to report to Triple-A Buffalo before the regular season gets underway. He posted an 8.35 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 18.1 innings at the big-league level with the Reds last season before getting released in July and linking up with the Red Sox on a minor-league deal shortly thereafter.

  • Red Sox's Jose De Leon: Lands minors deal with Boston

De Leon announced Thursday via his personal Twitter account that he signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox. De Leon will be moving on to his fourth MLB organization after he was released by the Reds just over a week ago. After being demoted to Triple-A Louisville in early May, De Leon made 12 appearances out of the bullpen with the affiliate, logging a 4.63 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 19 strikeouts in 11.2 innings. Expect him to report to Triple-A Worcester to begin his tenure with the Red Sox organization.

  • Jose De Leon: Released by Reds

De Leon was released by the Reds on Friday. De Leon opened the year on the active roster but was optioned in early May and designated for assignment in mid-July. He'll now leave in search of other opportunities, though he's likely to be stuck looking for a minor-league deal as he owns a career 8.44 ERA in 48 innings at the highest level.

  • Reds' Jose De Leon: Loses 40-man spot

The Reds designated De Leon for assignment Monday. De Leon earned a spot on the Reds' Opening Day roster, but he stuck around with the big club for a little over a month before he was optioned to Triple-A Louisville after posting an 8.35 ERA across his 18.1 innings out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old right-hander was dominant over his last nine relief outings at Louisville (0.96 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 14:3 K:BB in 9.1 innings), and that improved form coupled with his prospect pedigree could be enough for another organization to put in a waiver claim for him now that Cincinnati has dropped him from its 40-man roster.
