• Marlins' Eury Perez: Shifts to 60-day IL

  The Marlins transferred Perez (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday. The transaction came just a few hours after president of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced that Perez would undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery Monday. By transferring the 20-year-old right-hander to the 60-day IL, the Marlins were able to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for utility player Otto Lopez, whom Miami claimed off waivers from San Francisco on Thursday.

• Marlins' Eury Perez: Headed for Tommy John surgery

  Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced Thursday that Perez (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Perez was diagnosed with mild inflammation in his right elbow late in spring training and opened the season on the shelf, but he was never shut down from throwing and looked to be tracking toward making his season debut sometime in April. However, after experiencing elbow tightness following a bullpen session Tuesday, Perez met with Dr. Keith Meister, who recommended that the season-ending procedure. Even if no further damage is detected beyond a torn UCL once surgery is performed Monday, the 20-year-old is still likely facing a 14-to-16-month recovery timetable, meaning that he'll be out for a significant portion of the 2025 season as well. The injury is an unfortunate setback for the budding young ace, who disclosed in spring training that he had no history of elbow issues before the inflammation cropped up. He'll join Sandy Alcantara (elbow) among Marlins starters who are out for the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but Miami should soon get some reinforcement to its rotation with both Edward Cabrera (shoulder) and Braxton Garrett (shoulder) having recently pitched in rehab games.

Saturday marks the first time Perez has thrown off a mound since experiencing inflammation in his right elbow. He threw 20 pitches during his first session and used his entire arsenal of pitches, with everything seeming to go smoothly. He'll likely require a few more mound sessions before moving to facing live hitters, and a minor-league rehab assignment should come after that.

Perez had to be removed from his last Grapefruit League outing after just 14 pitches due to complications with a fingernail issue on his right middle finger. The right-hander had previously expressed optimism that he could still ramp back up in time for Opening Day, but this shutdown period, while relatively brief, makes a start during the opening weekend of the season unlikely. Perez was already in line to have his workload monitored this season, so it might make sense for the Marlins to push back his debut until at least the second turn through the rotation. The Marlins are already juggling injuries to other starters like Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder), however, and the fact that Miami plays eight straight games to begin the campaign before its first off day could also push the team to try and get Perez ready to go as soon as possible.

  Perez still believes he'll be able to build up properly ahead of Opening Day despite the fingernail issues that have plagued him this spring, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The precocious 20-year-old right-hander threw only 14 pitches Wednesday due to a recurrence of the issues -- which is problematic when he was scheduled to get up into the 70-pitch range and days are running short on the Grapefruit League calendar. Perez says his early exit wasn't due to his nail splitting again however, but rather that the fake nail he was wearing to protect it began to lift up. "I don't know yet," Perez said Wednesday when asked what the next step in his preparations for the regular season would be. "I spoke with [head athletic trainer] Lee [Meyer], and he told me that we will tackle this early [Thursday], and we're going to make sure we have a plan so this doesn't happen during the season." As yet, Perez's availability for Opening Day doesn't appear to be in real jeopardy, but one more truncated spring outing simply won't leave him enough time to get built up.

This was the rookie's shortest start of the campaign outside of a six-run disaster against Atlanta on July 1 during which he recorded only one out, and he hasn't tossed more than five frames in any of his past four appearances. MLB's hottest offense provided some harsh lessons for the 20-year-old righty, as Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies led off the game with back-to-back solo shots, and all told five of the seven hits off Perez went for extra bases. Over his prior six starts however, the young phenom had allowed just one run with a 38:9 K:BB in 33 innings. Another outing or two like this might make it easier for the Marlins to send Perez back down to the minors and manage his workload, but with the team currently sitting in the first wild-card spot in the NL, it could be faced with some tough decisions on how to handle him in the second half. For now, Perez lines up for one more start before the All-Star break, which is likely to come at home next week against the Cardinals.
