Player Outlook
Eury Perez got the call to the big leagues on May 12, less than a month after his 20th birthday. It didn't take long for him to justify the hype; in a six-start stretch from May 28 to June 25, the lanky, 6-foot-8 righty went 4-0 with a 0.27 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 38:9 K:BB while completing at least five innings in each of those outings. The Marlins monitored his pitch counts closely and built in an extended breather around the All-Star break. Perez would go on to pitch to a 4.26 ERA in eight starts following his return to the majors in August before left hip inflammation ended his season. Home runs were a bit of an issue down the stretch -- he allowed nearly two homers per nine following his return -- but it's understandable that he'd be a bit gassed given his age and the fact that he'd previously topped out at just 77 innings. Between Double-A and the majors, Perez logged 128 innings last season, so a jump to 160-170 frames seems reasonable if far from guaranteed. Sky's the limit long term with his fastball-slider-curveball-changeup mix.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Marlins transferred Perez (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday. The transaction came just a few hours after president of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced that Perez would undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery Monday. By transferring the 20-year-old right-hander to the 60-day IL, the Marlins were able to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for utility player Otto Lopez, whom Miami claimed off waivers from San Francisco on Thursday.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Headed for Tommy John surgery

Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced Thursday that Perez (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Perez was diagnosed with mild inflammation in his right elbow late in spring training and opened the season on the shelf, but he was never shut down from throwing and looked to be tracking toward making his season debut sometime in April. However, after experiencing elbow tightness following a bullpen session Tuesday, Perez met with Dr. Keith Meister, who recommended that the season-ending procedure. Even if no further damage is detected beyond a torn UCL once surgery is performed Monday, the 20-year-old is still likely facing a 14-to-16-month recovery timetable, meaning that he'll be out for a significant portion of the 2025 season as well. The injury is an unfortunate setback for the budding young ace, who disclosed in spring training that he had no history of elbow issues before the inflammation cropped up. He'll join Sandy Alcantara (elbow) among Marlins starters who are out for the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but Miami should soon get some reinforcement to its rotation with both Edward Cabrera (shoulder) and Braxton Garrett (shoulder) having recently pitched in rehab games.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Throws off mound

Perez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Saturday marks the first time Perez has thrown off a mound since experiencing inflammation in his right elbow. He threw 20 pitches during his first session and used his entire arsenal of pitches, with everything seeming to go smoothly. He'll likely require a few more mound sessions before moving to facing live hitters, and a minor-league rehab assignment should come after that.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Playing long toss

Perez (elbow) played catch from 105 feet Friday and mixed in some breaking balls, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Heraldreports. Perez was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday and continues ramping up his throwing program after being shut down for a bit due to elbow inflammation. The right-hander should continue stretching out his throwing distance before resuming mound work.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Dealing with elbow soreness

Perez reported soreness in his elbow Thursday following his appearance in Wednesday's spring game against Washington, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Perez had to leave his appearance Wednesday after experiencing discomfort with the broken nail on his right middle finger. Now, Perez's elbow issue poses another threat to potentially delaying his start to the regular season. Perez will undergo further imaging and testing over the next few days to determine the severity of his injury, but it appears increasingly likely that Perez will miss the beginning of the regular season.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Won't throw until next week

Perez (finger) will be shut down from throwing for 3-to-4 days, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Perez had to be removed from his last Grapefruit League outing after just 14 pitches due to complications with a fingernail issue on his right middle finger. The right-hander had previously expressed optimism that he could still ramp back up in time for Opening Day, but this shutdown period, while relatively brief, makes a start during the opening weekend of the season unlikely. Perez was already in line to have his workload monitored this season, so it might make sense for the Marlins to push back his debut until at least the second turn through the rotation. The Marlins are already juggling injuries to other starters like Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder), however, and the fact that Miami plays eight straight games to begin the campaign before its first off day could also push the team to try and get Perez ready to go as soon as possible.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Still optimistic for Opening Day

Perez still believes he'll be able to build up properly ahead of Opening Day despite the fingernail issues that have plagued him this spring, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The precocious 20-year-old right-hander threw only 14 pitches Wednesday due to a recurrence of the issues -- which is problematic when he was scheduled to get up into the 70-pitch range and days are running short on the Grapefruit League calendar. Perez says his early exit wasn't due to his nail splitting again however, but rather that the fake nail he was wearing to protect it began to lift up. "I don't know yet," Perez said Wednesday when asked what the next step in his preparations for the regular season would be. "I spoke with [head athletic trainer] Lee [Meyer], and he told me that we will tackle this early [Thursday], and we're going to make sure we have a plan so this doesn't happen during the season." As yet, Perez's availability for Opening Day doesn't appear to be in real jeopardy, but one more truncated spring outing simply won't leave him enough time to get built up.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Set to start Friday

Perez (finger) is listed as the Marlins' probable starter for Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. The 20-year-old exited his previous start last weekend due to a broken nail on his right middle finger, but that won't affect his availability for Friday. Perez covered 2.1 frames in that start and should continue building up his workload over the final weeks of spring training.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Suffers broken fingernail

Perez exited his start Saturday against the Mets due to a broken nail on his right middle finger, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Perez had been dealing with a cut on the same finger earlier during camp, but his removal Saturday was unrelated. Perez said after his start that he felt no pain from the broken nail, and he doesn't expect it to become an issue going forward. The 20-year-old righty lasted 2.1 innings against New York, striking out two batters and walking one.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Exits with hand injury

Perez was removed from his appearance during Saturday's spring training game against the Mets, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Perez called a trainer out to the mound during the third inning of Saturday's game to take a look at his hand. Perez recently had problems with a cut on his right middle finger, so it's possible he aggravated the injury during the game. The Marlins should offer more information on Perez's condition in the near future, but his status for Opening Day likely won't be affected.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Out for regular season

The Marlins placed Perez on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left SI joint inflammation, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. With just over a week left in the regular season, Perez's move to the IL will put an early end to his rookie campaign. The 20-year-old righty will end with a 3.15 ERA and 1.13 WHIP alongside a 108:31 K:BB through 91.1 innings. If the Marlins are able to secure a playoff berth, Perez will be eligible to return prior to the start of the NLDS. Jeff Lindgren was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Takes loss in short start

Perez (5-6) completed three innings in a loss to the Mets on Wednesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters. Perez got through a scoreless first frame before serving up a solo homer to Mark Vientos in the second. New York tacked on two more runs against the right-hander in the third, though one of them was unearned, and Perez didn't return for the fourth inning after having thrown 69 pitches. This was the rookie's shortest start of the campaign outside of a six-run disaster against Atlanta on July 1 during which he recorded only one out, and he hasn't tossed more than five frames in any of his past four appearances. Perez now holds a 3.15 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 108:31 K:BB over 91.1 major-league innings this season.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Strikes out seven in loss

Perez (5-5) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits over 4.2 innings against the Brewers while striking out seven and not issuing any walks. Perez got off to a solid start, striking out five of the first nine batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff double to William Contreras in the fourth, which would lead to one run coming home for Miami in the frame. The young right-hander would then go on to allow another two runs in the fifth before being relieved by George Soriano, marking the fourth time in his last seven starts that he's failed to make it through five innings. Perez has not won a start since June 25 and currently holds a 5.02 ERA in September to go along with a 16:6 K:BB.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Tosses five frames in no-decision

Perez did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings in Miami's 3-2 win over Philadelphia. He struck out four. A first-inning homer by Trea Turner was the fourth allowed by Perez in his last two outings, but he settled down from there. After working 78 innings in 2021 and 77 innings last year in the Marlins' farm system, Perez has now thrown 120.1 innings this year between Triple-A and the majors, although it's hard to imagine the Marlins will shut him down amid a playoff push. The 20-year-old will carry a 2.90 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 99 strikeouts in 83.2 big-league innings into his next start, which is scheduled to take place mid-week in Milwaukee.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Hit hard in no-decision

Perez came away with a no-decision in Friday's 8-5 extra-innings win over the Nationals, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. All three runs off the 20-year-old phenom came on solo shots, as Perez served up a leadoff homer to CJ Abrams in the first inning before Lane Thomas and Travis Blankenhorn took him deep in the third. Perez has completed at least five innings only twice in five starts since rejoining the big-league rotation in August, but he's posted a respectable 3.91 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB through 25.1 innings over that stretch. The rookie right-hander will likely make his next start at home next week against the Dodgers.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Fans seven in quality start

Perez came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Marlins' 3-2 loss to the Nationals, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. The rookie right-hander was impressive, generating 14 swinging strikes on only 76 pitches, but he left the mound with the score tied 1-1. Perez has delivered back-to-back quality starts after a couple bumpier outings in his return to the big-league rotation, putting to rest for now any worries the 20-year-old could be tiring -- Perez is up to 110.2 innings this season between Triple-A and the majors, a big jump from his 77 innings in the minors in 2022. Miami will likely try to find extra rest for him down the stretch, but Perez's next outing still lines up for a road series next weekend and a potential rematch with the Nationals.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Strikes out 10 in quality start

Perez allowed two hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over six scoreless innings, taking a no-decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Dodgers. Perez was fairly efficient with 90 pitches (60 strikes) in his third start back from a stint in the minors. The right-hander had allowed four runs in each of his last two outings before Saturday's effort, which was arguably his best of the campaign. The 20-year-old is now at a 2.91 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 83:21 K:BB through 68 innings over 14 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the lowly Nationals next week.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Activated ahead of start

The Marlins recalled Perez from Double-A Pensacola ahead of his scheduled start Monday in Cincinnati, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Perez is back in the big leagues and will make his first appearance since July 6 after the Marlins elected to stash him in the minors for the past month in an effort to limit his workload in his age-20 campaign. Per McPherson, Perez's start Monday is expected to be one of 10 the Marlins are tentatively planning on having him make over the rest of the season, provided Miami still remains in the thick of playoff contention by late September/early October. After turning a dazzling 2.36 ERA while striking out 61 batters over 53.1 innings over his first 11 big-league starts, Perez looks worthy of an immediate activation this week for any fantasy managers that had been holding him.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Gets education in Atlanta

Perez (5-2) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on seven hits in just one-third of an inning as the Marlins fell 7-0 to Atlanta. MLB's hottest offense provided some harsh lessons for the 20-year-old righty, as Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies led off the game with back-to-back solo shots, and all told five of the seven hits off Perez went for extra bases. Over his prior six starts however, the young phenom had allowed just one run with a 38:9 K:BB in 33 innings. Another outing or two like this might make it easier for the Marlins to send Perez back down to the minors and manage his workload, but with the team currently sitting in the first wild-card spot in the NL, it could be faced with some tough decisions on how to handle him in the second half. For now, Perez lines up for one more start before the All-Star break, which is likely to come at home next week against the Cardinals.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: May be paused before All-Star break

The Marlins are considering pausing Perez following his scheduled start next weekend against Atlanta, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but it appears the Marlins are looking to give Perez an extended rest period heading into the All-Star break. The 20-year-old rookie has been phenomenal since arriving in the majors, recording a 1.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with a 45:14 K:BB through 41 frames. With 72 innings pitched between Triple-A and the majors this season, Perez is quickly approaching the most innings he's ever thrown in a season (78).
