Player Outlook
Ian Gibaut earned trust in high-leverage situations early last season and went on to appear in 74 games, which was tied for fifth in the league among relief pitchers. His 75.2 innings were more than his previous four seasons combined and he posted eight wins, three saves and 23 holds. The 30-year-old righty had decent ratios, but didn't strike many batters out and had a below average 8.8% walk rate. Gibaut could use another strikeout pitch to complement his mid-90's 4-seamer and he's been successful with his sweeper in the past, but it's unknown whether a pitch mix adjustment is in store. He's likely to open 2024 in a setup role for Cincinnati, a retooled bullpen could push Gibaut back to the sixth or seventh inning.

  • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Resuming rehab assignment

Gibaut (forearm) will resume his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Gibaut experienced renewed discomfort in his forearm following his most recent rehab appearance April 16, but fortunately for the right-hander, a week off was seemingly all he needed to bounce back from the setback. Since opening the season on the 15-day injured list, Gibaut has made five rehab appearances between Louisville and High-A Dayton, giving up five earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven over 4.1 innings.

Gibaut had thrown 25 pitches in a rehab appearance Tuesday and was scheduled to pitch again the next day. The Reds had targeted April 20 as a return for the right-hander, but manager David Bell said it will likely take longer now. • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Nearing mound work

Gibaut (forearm) hopes to begin throwing off a mound Sunday or Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The reliever still doesn't have a timeline for his return and Opening Day remains very much in question, but he looks to be trending in the right direction.

  • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Battling forearm strain

Gibaut was diagnosed with a pronator strain Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Gibaut will be shut down from throwing for 3-to-5 days before working his way back, but the team's concern level seems relatively low. The 30-year-old righty logged a 3.33 ERA in 75.2 innings last season and will likely serve in middle relief for the Reds in 2024.

  • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Picks up third save

Gibaut tossed a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh. Despite having already worked both Friday and Saturday, Gibaut was called upon Sunday to close out the game in favor of closer Alexis Diaz, who worked the eighth after he had allowed seven runs over his previous two appearances. The save was Gibaut's third of the season. With the Reds' playoff hopes now hanging by a thread and considering the recent struggles by Diaz, it will be interesting to see if Gibaut or another reliever can pose as a threat for the closer role the rest of the way.

Gibaut picked up the save Monday against the Mariners. He allowed one hit while striking out one over one-third of an inning. Crawford before punching out Julio Rodriguez, who represented the tying run, to close out the 6-3 victory. It's the second save of the year for the 29-year-old Gibaut and his first since April 9. He's been solid while working in a setup role in front of Alexis Diaz this season -- Gibaut now sports a 3. 32 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP, 61:24 K:BB and 20 holds across 65 innings.

  • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Helps snap losing skid

Gibaut struck out two over one inning in Wednesday's 3-2 win over San Francisco. He was the first of three relievers to maintain the Reds' 3-2 lead and snap the team's six-game losing streak. Gibaut has been a dependable middle-relief arm and has pitched to a 1.08 ERA with nine strikeouts and one walk over 8.1 innings during July. For the season, the right-hander sports a 3.21 ERA with 11 holds, one save, 41 strikeouts, 19 walks and six home runs over 47.2 innings.

  • Reds' Ian Gibaut: Picks up first save of 2023

Gibaut struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save during Sunday's 6-4 win over the Phillies. However, he got a save chance during Sunday's series finale since the Reds mounted a late-game comeback. Alexis Diaz still figures to be the favorite for ninth-inning work in Cincinnati, but he gave up three earned runs Saturday against Philadelphia. However, Gibaut's recent usage suggests that he has some trust in high-leverage situations.

The Reds claimed Gibaut off waivers from the Dodgers on Tuesday. Gibaut finds a new home two days after the Dodgers designated him for assignment. • Guardians' Ian Gibaut: Moved off 40-man roster

The Guardians designated Gibaut for assignment Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. The 28-year-old right-handed reliever has spent the majority of the campaign at Triple-A Columbus, though he was called up from the minors Monday and pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen in Monday's 11-1 loss to the Twins.

  • Guardians' Ian Gibaut: Heads to MiLB IL

Triple-A Columbus placed Gibaut on its 7-day injured list Monday with a dislocated finger on his right hand. Prior to landing on the IL, the veteran reliever made seven appearances this season for Columbus this season, giving up six earned runs while striking out nine over 7.2 innings. Gibaut previously made three appearances in the majors with the Twins in 2021, but his lack of a 40-man roster spot will make it difficult for him to earn a call-up to Cleveland at any point in 2022.
