Player Outlook
Stuart Fairchild opened 2023 on the major league roster and played regularly as a starter or late-game sub against left-handers over the first two-and-a-half months before being optioned to Triple-A Louisville with a .237 average over 64 games. He eventually finished the year in the majors, mostly as a fifth outfielder with stretches as a starter when injuries hit. With Spencer Steer expected to see most of his time in the outfield, a competition for fifth outfielder should play out during spring training. Fairchild brings above-average defense at all three outfield spots and speed, which gives him a leg up on the competition. That he doesn't have options remaining works in his favor, as Nick Martini still has one left. The Reds could option Martini, leaving Fairchild and Jose Barrero, whose primary position is shortstop, to compete for a job.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Steals bag in win

Fairchild went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-0 win over the White Sox. Fairchild stole his fifth base in five attempts in what has been a part-time role to start the season. He should continue to be a lineup regular against left-handers until TJ Friedl (wrist) is ready to play. Friedl recently had a checkup and needs another week to 10 days of being limited to light activity, pushing his return into the first half of May.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Logs fourth steal

Fairchild started in right field and went 0-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 10-8 win over Milwaukee. Fairchild was originally scheduled to start in center field and bat fifth, but he was moved to right field and leadoff following a pregame injury to Jonathan India (leg), the Reds' normal leadoff hitter. The injury to India is not believed to be significant, so the leadoff role may be short-lived. Fairchild is 6-for-19 with three walks and four steals over seven games. He'll continue to see enhanced opportunities while TJ Friedl (wrist) remains idle.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: RBI, steal in comeback win

Fairchild went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Mets. Pinch hitting for designated hitter Nick Martini, Fairchild singled in a run, then stole second base as part of a double steal. He remained in the game at DH and later had a bunt single and scored on a sacrifice fly as part of the Reds' five-run eighth inning that erased New York's lead. The righty-swinging Fairchild, who is 5-for-13 with three steals through five games, will likely be part of Sunday's starting lineup against southpaw Sean Manaea.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Steals two bases

Fairchild went 1-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases in Monday's victory over the Phillies. Fairchild drew the start Monday against the left-handed Cristopher Sanchez as he's the weak side of a platoon with Jake Fraley currently. The 28-year-old managed to steal 10 bases over 244 plate appearances in 2023, so he is a speed threat whenever he plays. However, playing time could be difficult to come by in the Reds lineup due to the emergence of Will Benson and Nick Martini in the early going.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Part of center field mix

Fairchild will share the center field duties with Will Benson while TJ Friedl (wrist) is out, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Fairchild entered spring training having to win a roster spot, but Friedl's injury likely clinches that. Fairchild appeared to be in position to win a spot anyhow.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Battling for roster spot

Fairchild is one of four Reds players battling for a likely last roster spot for Opening Day, along with Jose Barrero, Josh Harrison and Tony Kemp, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. As Rosecrans elaborates, the Reds have significant infield depth, so Fairchild isn't hurt by his OF-only status. Moreover, he has a slight advantage by virtue of hitting right-handed, as TJ Friedl, Jake Fraley and Will Benson are lefty hitters.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Returns to action

Fairchild entered Tuesday's game in the ninth inning as the left fielder and went 0-for-1 in a 7-0 loss to Minnesota. Fairchild made his first appearance since coming off the COVID-19-related injured list. Given the large deficit, Reds manager David Bell inserted several bench players during the latter innings, one of which was Fairchild who got himself acclimated to game conditions in a low-pressure setting.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Back from COVID-19 IL

Fairchild (illness) was activated from the COVID-19-related injured list Monday. Fairchild was away from the Reds for a little over a week but is ready to roll now following a short rehab assignment. With Hunter Renfroe designated for assignment and Harrison Bader (groin) on the 10-day injured list, Fairchild should see regular playing time versus left-handed pitching down the stretch.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: On rehab assignment

Fairchild (COVID-19) has begun a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Fairchild landed on the COVID-19 injured list last weekend but is now feeling well enough to ramp things back up. He's eligible to return Saturday, but the Reds might wait until early next week when they return home to activate him.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Placed on COVID-19 IL

The Reds placed Fairchild on the COVID-19 injured list Saturday. The Reds' COVID-19 outbreak has primarily affected the team's pitchers up to this point, but now Fairchild will miss time as he fights off infection. Alejo Lopez was brought up from Triple-A Louisville as a replacement player for Fairchild.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Swipes bag in win

Fairchild entered as a pinch runner, stole a base and scored a run in a 3-2 win over the Cubs in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. He went 0-for-2 as the starting left fielder in the matinee. Fairchild was part of Cincinnati's two-run ninth inning during the nightcap, which allowed the Reds to avoid a sweep. He ran for Christian Encarnacion-Strand then stole second base, putting him in position to score the winning run on Noelvi Marte's walkoff single. The steal was the 10th for Fairchild, who recently returned from the concussion list. He'll continue to operate as a depth outfielder.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Takes seat Tuesday

Fairchild is not in the lineup Tuesday at San Francisco. Fairchild just returned Monday from a 7-day stint on the concussion injured list and will likely continue to be eased back into action. Will Benson, TJ Friedl and Nick Senzel are starting across the outfield for the Reds on Tuesday against the Giants.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Starting in return

Fairchild (concussion) was activated from the 7-day injured list and is in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Fairchild spent the past week on the concussion list after a collision with the outfield wall, but he is ready to return and will immediately claim a spot in the starting nine. He will start in right field and hit seventh for the Reds on Monday night.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Begins rehab assignment

Fairchild (concussion) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Saturday. A collision with the outfield wall Sunday against Toronto forced Fairchild onto the 7-day concussion IL on Monday. He'll play a couple of games in Triple-A before likely returning from the injured list when eligible Monday.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Lands on concussion list

Fairchild was placed on the 7-day concussion list Monday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Fairchild entered concussion protocol after banging into the outfield wall during Sunday's loss to the Blue Jays, and after further evaluation, he's been moved to the concussion list. The Reds will promote Mike Siani from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Enters concussion protocol

Fairchild was removed in the top of the third inning of Sunday's game against the Blue Jays and entered the concussion protocol, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He grounded out in his lone at-bat before exiting the contest. Fairchild collided with the outfield wall in the top of the second while attempting to rob a home run, and though he stayed in the game until the Reds recorded the final out of the frame, he was replaced in the field by TJ Hopkins in the next inning. Since he's still being checked out for a concussion at this stage and hasn't been diagnosed with a brain injury, Fairchild may not immediately land on the 7-day injured list until the Reds complete their evaluation. The 27-year-old has been handling a near-everyday role in the outfield of late since Jake Fraley (toe) landed on the injured list earlier this month.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Goes yard in win

Fairchild went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Guardians. Fairchild's two-run shot in the fourth inning turned out to be the game-winning hit for the Reds, who stumbled through the first half of the month with an inconsistent offense that's missing Jake Fraley (toe) and Jonathan India (foot). Those two injuries have led to a spike in Fairchild's playing time during this most recent stint in the majors. His window could close soon, pending the results of Fraley's upcoming MRI (Friday) to determine the progress of his stress fracture.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Becoming fixture in lineup

Fairchild will start in center field and bat seventh in Tuesday's game against the Guardians. Fairchild has largely served as a short-side platoon bat during his multiple stints with the big club this season, but he seems to have moved into more of a full-time role in August while the Reds have been down Jake Fraley (toe) and Jonathan India (foot). He'll be included in the lineup for the seventh time in eight games, replacing the lefty-hitting TJ Friedl in center field while southpaw Logan Allen takes the hill for Cleveland. Fairchild should occupy a corner-outfield spot when the Reds oppose right-handed pitching.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Triples, scores in loss

Fairchild started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Miami. To those watching the game, it looked like Fairchild had hit an inside-the-park home run -- he donned the celebratory Viking helmet in the dugout -- but the play was officially ruled a triple with a throwing error that allowed him to score. This was his sixth start in nine games since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville, and the outfielder is 4-for-21 with an RBI and six strikeouts. The Reds are coping with injuries to Jonathan India (foot) and Jake Fraley (toe), leading to Fairchild's recent spate of plate appearances.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Back in big leagues

Fairchild was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. The 27-year-old was sent to Louisville in early July but will rejoin the big club Sunday with Jonathan India (foot) landing on the injured list. Fairchild has a .237/.339/.404 slash line in 66 games this season, and he's unlikely to see significant playing time since Cincinnati's outfield group is currently in good health.
