Player Outlook
The Astros' first-round pick in 2022 and the headliner to New York in the deal that sent Justin Verlander back to Houston, Drew Gilbert had peaks and valleys last season, but he finished well and appears to be almost big-league ready. The strong, athletic 5-foot-9 center fielder can handle all three outfield spots and could turn into a five-tool player. From June 25 on, Gilbert slashed .311/.386/.545 with 11 home runs and five steals in 59 games at Double-A. He had an 18.9 percent strikeout rate over that stretch, so the 23-year-old lefty hitter may be poised to keep mashing upper-minors pitching until the Mets start his clock. No longer a plus runner, Gilbert has good instincts on the bases, but he may be capped at around 15 steals in the majors. Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marie are locked in as everyday players when healthy, but Gilbert could grab the other spot sometime in the first half if he performs as expected. Long term, he could be a leadoff or No. 2 hitter, but he would probably be a bottom-third hitter initially.

Gilbert became one of the organization's top prospects after being acquired from the Astros in the Justin Verlander trade last year, and he went 1-for-9 in Grapefruit League play for the Mets this spring. The 23-year-old had a .984 OPS in 35 games at Double-A Binghamton following the trade, and he'll either return there or head to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the 2024 campaign.

Picked up from the Astros in last year's Justin Verlander deal, Gilbert is the top outfield prospect in the Mets' organization and slashed .325/.423/.561 in 149 plate appearances for Double-A Binghamton following the trade. The 23-year-old could open the season at Triple-A and make his major-league debut later in 2024, but he's a long shot to break camp with the big-league club after the Mets added Harrison Bader last month.

  • Mets' Drew Gilbert: Shipped to Mets in Verlander deal

    Gilbert was traded from the Astros to the Mets on Tuesday along with at least one other prospect in exchange for Justin Verlander, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Netting Gilbert in return for Verlander is a nice piece of business for the Mets, as the 22-year-old center fielder is the Astros' best prospect. He dominated at High-A earlier this season (192 wRC+), in part because he was old for the level and playing half his games in the hitter-friendly park in Asheville. Gilbert has been less prolific at Double-A Corpus Christi, slashing .241/.342/.371 with six home runs and six steals, although he has heated up of late, batting .293 with five home runs and a 17.1 percent strikeout rate over his last 99 at-bats. Down the road, Gilbert has a chance to be a leadoff or No. 2 hitter who contributes in all five standard rotisserie categories. He could reach the majors sometime next season.

Gilbert was only able to play 10 games in 2022 after he crashed into the wall in center and dislocated his right elbow. The 26th pick of last year's draft out of Tennessee is considered one of the more advanced players from the 2022 class.
