Player Outlook
Hunter Gaddis appeared in 11 games for Cleveland in 2023, making seven starts and totaling 42 innings pitched. The 25-year-old had middling results with a 4.50 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while striking out only 24 batters. Gaddis has flashed upside throughout his minor league career entering last year with a 12.1 K/9, but those results have yet to transfer to the major league level. Currently, Gaddis is on the outside looking in at a rotation spot with the Guardians and could settle into a long relief role for the team. For fantasy purposes Gaddis is best viewed as a streaming starter at best.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Shaping up as reliever

Gaddis has allowed two runs on four hits, one walk and two hit batsmen while striking out seven over 5.2 innings across four Cactus League appearances. Gaddis hasn't started any of his outings this spring, which suggests he's not in serious contention for a rotation spot. He's started nine of his 13 major-league appearances over the last two years, but the results have been mediocre at best. Gaddis doesn't have great strikeout numbers in the majors and his velocity sits around 93.5 mph, so he may be best suited for a long-relief role if he makes the big-league roster out of camp.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Optioned to Triple-A

Gaddis was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Gaddis was recalled ahead of his start Thursday. He pitched three scoreless innings versus the Orioles, but he was taken out after taking a hit off of his leg. With Shane Bieber (elbow) returning from the 60-day injured list, the 25-year-old was optioned back down.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Goes three innings in start

Gaddis allowed a hit and two walks while striking out one over three scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Orioles on Thursday. Gaddis ended up covering the most innings of any Cleveland pitcher in a bullpen day. He made just two appearances with Triple-A Columbus over the last three weeks, allowing two runs over 7.2 innings. In the majors, he has a pedestrian 4.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 24:14 K:BB across 42 innings over 11 appearances (seven starts). With Shane Bieber (elbow) and Triston McKenzie (elbow) returning and the Guardians having two off days next week, Gaddis will probably not be needed to start again in 2023.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Recalled for start Thursday

Gaddis was recalled from Triple-A Columbus ahead of his start Thursday versus the Orioles. Gaddis has struggled to a 6.14 ERA in 73.1 innings this season at the Triple-A level and owns an ugly 6.99 ERA and 28:15 K:BB in 46.1 career major-league frames. The 25-year-old right-hander is not a recommended fantasy streamer against Baltimore.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Getting start Thursday

Gaddis will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start for the Guardians on Thursday against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Gaddis will be taking over the rotation spot vacated by Tanner Bibee (hip), who was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier this week. Over 10 appearances (six starts) with Cleveland this season, Gaddis has put up a 4.85 ERA over 10 appearances. Gaddis might receive just the one start, as the Guardians are poised to get Shane Bieber (elbow) and Triston McKenzie (elbow) back from the 60-day injured list in the coming days.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Returns to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Gaddis to Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Gaddis was sent back to the minors one day after being called up to serve as the 27th man for the Guardians' doubleheader with the Dodgers. The 25-year-old worked 4.2 innings out of the bullpen in Thursday's 9-3 loss, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while failing to record a strikeout.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Brought up as 27th man

The Guardians added Gaddis from Triple-A Columbus to serve as their 27th man Thursday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Because Wednesday's game with the Dodgers ended up spilling into Thursday due to rain, the Guardians will be allowed to use Gaddis as an extra man in their bullpen. The 25-year-old righty has put up a 5.17 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 31.1 frames in the majors this season, and he will likely return to Columbus immediately after Thursday's contest.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Six scoreless innings in win

Gaddis (1-1) earned the win Monday, tossing six scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits and one walk during a 3-0 win over the White Sox. He struck out four. After a month at Triple-A Columbus, Gaddis was called up to the big-league club ahead of Monday's contest and made his sixth start of the season. It was the second time he completed at least six scoreless frames, lowering his ERA from 6.86 to 5.26. Gaddis hasn't been a major strikeout pitcher yet, but he's been able to take care of business more often than not in 2023, as the majority of the damage done to his ERA came during a tumultuous outing versus the Yankees on April 11. Gaddis figures to get at least one more turn in the rotation after his stellar outing against Chicago, but he's not guaranteed a spot in the rotation when Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) finish their rehab assignments.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Officially called up

Gaddis was called up from Triple-A Columbus and will start Monday against the White Sox, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. As expected, Gaddis will join the Guardians ahead of their three-game series with the White Sox on Monday, drawing the start in the series opener. The 25-year-old has struggled to a 6.86 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 19.2 innings in the big leagues this season, but most of the damage came April 11 against the Yankees, when he surrendered eight runs over three frames. Gaddis will look to kick off his second stint in the big leagues a little better Monday when he takes on a disappointing Chicago team.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: En route to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Gaddis to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday. As expected, Gaddis will return to the minors after he was called up from Columbus to serve as the Guardians' 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader with the Marlins. Though he turned in a scoreless two-inning relief appearance in Cleveland's 6-1 loss in Game 1, Gaddis' poor body of work in four starts with the big club earlier this season has removed him from consideration for a spot in the Guardians' rotation at this time. Instead, Logan Allen -- who was promoted from Triple-A to take the hill for Sunday's series finale with Miami -- will at least temporarily settle in as the Guardians' new No. 5 starter.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Called up, works in relief

Gaddis, who was called up from Triple-A Columbus prior to Saturday's doubleheader with the Marlins, came on in relief in the Guardians' 6-1 loss in Game 1 and struck out one over two perfect innings. The appearance was Gaddis' fifth of the season with the big club but his first out of the bullpen. He had been included in the Opening Day rotation before being sent out to Columbus after posting a 7.64 and 1.58 WHIP across 17.2 innings through his first four starts. He'll likely be sent back to Columbus to continue making regular starts, but Gaddis doesn't look like he'll be the top choice to rejoin the big-league rotation if Cal Quantrill (leg) is forced to miss his next start.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Demoted to Triple-A

Cleveland optioned Gaddis to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. The 25-year-old is being sent down to make room for infield prospect Brayan Rocchio on the 26-man active roster. Gaddis struggled for the most part over his four starts with the big club this season, logging a 7.64 ERA and 12:6 K:BB over 17.2 innings. The Guardians could turn to Gaddis to make starts again, but there are other internal options (Tanner Bibee, Xzavion Curry, Konnor Pilkington) that could get the chance before the right-hander receives another opportunity.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Struggles in loss

Gaddis (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, allowing eight runs on eight hits and two walks over three innings against the Yankees. He struck out three. Gaddis has pitched poorly in two of his three starts to begin the year, with the one exception being the six shutout innings he fired against the rebuilding Athletics last Wednesday. The right-hander was staked a 2-0 lead, but he gave up a run in the second and five more in the third with three of them coming on a blast by Franchy Cordero. He'd allow two more in the fourth without getting an out to see his ERA balloon to 8.53 on the season. Gaddis is lined up to face the Tigers early next week.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Fires six shutout frames

Gaddis was tagged with a no-decision against Oakland on Wednesday despite pitching six scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four batters. Gaddis gave up four runs over 3.2 innings against Seattle in his season debut, but he was much improved against the A's. The right-hander gave up only one hit -- a Jesus Aguilar double -- and breezed through six innings on 77 pitches. He departed in line for the win, but Cleveland's bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the game eventually went into extra innings. Gaddis is in the rotation due to Triston McKenzie's arm injury, and his performance Wednesday will almost certainly earn him at least another start. His next outing may be more challenging, however, as it's tentatively lined up to come against the Yankees.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Early exit against M's

Gaddis didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 9-4 win over the Mariners, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out four. While the right-hander was able to keep the ball in the park, Gaddis gave up plenty of loud contact as three of the five hits off him went for extra bases. He also produced only five swinging strikes among his 70 pitches, a poor recipe for future success. Gaddis will hold down the fort in the rotation for now while Triston McKenzie (shoulder) is sidelined, but another shaky start or two could cause him to get bumped aside, whether by another depth option like Konnor Pilkington or by a top prospect who has a hot start at Triple-A, such as Tanner Bibee.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Starting second game of season

Gaddis is scheduled to start the Guardians' second game of the season Friday versus the Mariners in Seattle, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Gaddis appeared poised to open the season in a long-relief role, but he'll end up moving into Cleveland's rotation as a replacement for Triston McKenzie (shoulder), who could be sidelined for up to eight weeks. Gaddis has piled up a good number of strikeouts in the minors, but he's struggled against lefties and with keeping the ball in the yard. Fantasy managers should probably look in another direction.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Expected to move into rotation

Gaddis is expected to move into the Guardians' rotation to replace the injured Triston McKenzie (shoulder), Mandy Bell and Jesus Cano of MLB.com report. Gaddis had been projected for a bullpen role, but it should be a seamless transition since he's still stretched out from spring training. The right-hander pitched well during Cactus League play with a 2.77 ERA and 17:3 K:BB over 13 innings. Gaddis was much less successful in two spot starts for Cleveland in 2022 (18.41 ERA), but he struck out 158 across 121.1 frames between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. With McKenzie potentially sidelined for two months, Gaddis could get a long look in the rotation.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Will start season in bullpen

Gaddis has been informed he's made the Opening Day roster for the Guardians, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Gaddis was roughed up for 15 runs in just 7.1 innings last year in two appearances -- good for an 18.41 ERA -- but he has pitched well in the Cactus League with a 2.77 ERA over 13 innings with a 17:3 K:BB and even 1.00 WHIP. He'll likely be a multi-inning option in low-leverage situations to begin 2023.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Called up to start

Gaddis was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. It was announced Wednesday that Gaddis would be called up to start the following day, and the Guardians made the move official Thursday morning. Gaddis was tagged for eight earned runs over 3.1 innings in his August 5 big-league debut, but he was sharp in his last two starts with Columbus, posting a 2.31 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings.

  • Guardians' Hunter Gaddis: Getting spot start Thursday

Gaddis is expected to be called up from Triple-A Columbus to start Thursday versus the White Sox, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Gaddis is set to join the rotation for what will likely just be a spot start after Triston McKenzie was pushed back a day in the pitching schedule to Friday's series opener with the Twins. The rookie has previously made one start with the Guardians on Aug. 6, surrendering eight runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.1 innings against Houston.
