  • Mariners' Carlos Vargas: Optioned to Tacoma

The Mariners optioned Vargas to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Vargas allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings across six spring training games, and he will ultimately miss out on a spot in the Mariners' Opening Day bullpen. The 24-year-old righty turned in a 7.23 ERA and 2.11 WHIP across 42.1 innings with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate last season, and he will certainly need to improve upon those numbers before he gets called up to Seattle.

  • Mariners' Carlos Vargas: Acquired by Mariners

The Mariners acquired Vargas and Seby Zavala from the Diamondbacks in exchange for Eugenio Suarez on Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Vargas posted a 5.79 ERA and 7:4 K:BB over 4.2 innings with Arizona and a 7.02 ERA and 36:32 K:BB across 42.1 frames at Triple-A Reno in 2023. While the control problems are worrisome, Vargas has a huge arm and could develop into a late-inning weapon if he can throw enough strikes.

  • Diamondbacks' Carlos Vargas: Wins final spot in bullpen

Vargas won the final spot in the Diamondbacks' bullpen, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports reports. Vargas put his stamp on the job with a sharp 2.61 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 10.1 innings this spring in the Cactus League. Acquired from the Guardians in November, the 23-year-old right-hander could quickly work his way up the patchwork bullpen depth chart in Arizona. He might even be a sleeper for saves.

  • Guardians' Carlos Vargas: Recalled Friday

Vargas was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Vargas spent plenty of time at Double-A Akron earlier in the year after returning to full health following Tommy John surgery that he underwent in April of 2021. However, he was promoted to the Triple-A club at the beginning of September and allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out 12 in six innings over four relief appearances. The right-hander will likely serve as a multi-inning option out of Cleveland's bullpen, and his first appearance with the Guardians will be his major-league debut.
