If you are into a younger version of Jose Quintana or Wade Miley, boy do we have a guy for you. Tommy Henry's short arm action and delivery hides the ball well enough allowing his stuff to play up well enough to be effective one to two trips through the lineup. He is at his best when he is pitching backwards off his breaking ball and keeping hitters off balance but command issues can lead to him using his pedestrian fastball more often than he truly should use the pitch. To date, the lefty has been much more effective against righties thanks to his changeup as the lefties he has seen have done rather well (.292/.366/.508) compared to the righties (.244/.326/.416.) Henry did not pitch after July 28th due to an elbow strain but was still in the picture for postseason usage in mid-October. That situation bears watching as you consider Henry in your NL-Only leagues or deeper mixed league formats.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Dazzles in win

Henry (1-1) earned the win Tuesday against St. Louis, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. Henry was optioned to Triple-A Reno on April 17 after logging a 6.87 ERA in four starts with the Diamondbacks. However, with Kyle Nelson (shoulder) and Merrill Kelly (shoulder) being placed on the IL, Henry rejoined the big-league club for Tuesday's start. He tied his season high in strikeouts and didn't allow multiple runs for the first time all year en route to a quality start. His impressive outing likely bought him another go-around in Arizona's rotation, with a tentative matchup against the Dodgers set for Monday.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Recalled ahead of spot start

The Diamondbacks recalled Henry from Triple-A Reno ahead of his start against the Cardinals on Tuesday. The 26-year-old was demoted to Reno on April 17 after he posted a 6.87 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB in his first four starts of the season, but he'll rejoin the Diamondbacks for another start Tuesday. Henry could stick in the rotation with a strong performance since Ryne Nelson (elbow) and Merrill Kelly (shoulder) are on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Drawing spot start Tuesday

Henry will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Tuesday's game against the Cardinals, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. The Diamondbacks optioned Henry to Triple-A last Wednesday, so Arizona will have to place a player on the injured list to facilitate the left-hander's return to the 26-man active roster. The southpaw has struggled in his first four appearances of the 2024 campaign, posting a 6.87 ERA and 1.80 WHIP with 18 strikeouts across 18.1 innings, though he'll draw a favorable matchup Tuesday in St. Louis.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Heads to Triple-A

Arizona optioned Henry to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. Henry was sent down immediately following his latest poor start in which he allowed five runs over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Tuesady. With Jordan Montgomery slated to join the Arizona rotation later this week, Henry became the odd man out.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Tagged for five runs

Henry didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over 4.1 innings against the Cubs. He struck out three. After yielding a pair of runs in back-to-back starts, Henry had a tough time getting through the Cubs' order. While he didn't surrender a home run, the Cubs accounted for six extra-base hits off Henry while he generated a season-low three strikeouts. With Jordan Montgomery set to join the D-Backs' rotation Friday, it appears as though Henry could be the odd man out.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Fans six at Coors Field

Henry came away with an no-decision in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Rockies, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six. A two-run homer by Michael Toglia in the fourth inning accounted for most of the damage off Henry, who exited the game after 95 pitches (62 strikes). The results could have been far worse at Coors Field, but the southpaw has still been taken deep in all three of his starts to begin the season and has a 5.79 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB through 14 innings. He'll look for his first win of 2024 in his next outing, likely to come early next week at home against the Cubs.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Punches out five in no-decision

Henry did not factor into the decision Friday against Atlanta, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five. Henry looked much sharper against Atlanta after struggling in his season debut against Colorado. He faced no easy task -- having to duel Spencer Strider -- and managed to tally more whiffs than the Atlanta righty (14 vs. 12). Henry is tentatively scheduled for a rematch with the Rockies on the road in his next start.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Falters in season debut

Henry (0-1) took the loss against Colorado on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters over four-plus innings. Henry got through four frames having allowed a manageable two runs, but he unraveled in the fifth. In that inning, the Rockies put their first three batters on base to chase Henry, and all three crossed the plate to mar the hurler's final stat line. Henry received a spot in the rotation as a result of Eduardo Rodriguez landing on the IL with a lat injury, but he'll likely need to pitch much better to remain a starter when Rodriguez returns or when Jordan Montgomery, whom the Diamondbacks signed March 26, is ramped up enough to join the big club.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Opens in rotation

Henry will be part of the rotation to start the season, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Henry, who appeared to fall behind Ryne Nelson in bid for the fifth starter job this spring, enters the rotation due to an injury to Eduardo Rodriguez (lat). Arizona manager Torey Lovullo did not have a timetable for Rodriguez's return, but given the latter's need to build up once he's ready to begin throwing, Henry should get multiple starts in April. Henry pitched six scoreless innings in Monday's exhibition against Cleveland, which came on the heels of his final Cactus League turn when he threw 3.1 scoreless frames.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Bounces back

Henry walked one and struck out three over 3.1 hitless and scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Rockies. Henry bounced back from a few rough appearances. He entered the start having allowed five runs in each of his last two outings, which may have set him behind Ryne Nelson for the final spot in the rotation. Wednesday's turnaround comes after Eduardo Rodriguez was removed from a Cactus League start due to a lat injury, which could temporarily open a second spot in the rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Spring ERA blows up

Henry allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.2 innings in Thursday's spring start against the Royals. Henry's spring started hopeful, but it's gone the other way over his last three appearances. The left-hander allowed 13 runs on 22 hits and four walks over his last 8.2 innings, blowing up his ERA to 8.56. His primary competition for the final rotation spot, Ryne Nelson, has a 3.09 ERA over 11.2 innings. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo hasn't yet officially named Nelson the No. 5 starter, but that announcement should be coming soon.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Sharp in Cactus League opener

Henry allowed one hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings in Friday's spring start against the Rockies. Henry, pitching for the first time since a July 30 elbow injury ended his 2023 season, threw 15 of 22 pitches for strikes. He had command of all his pitches and was pleased with the results of mechanical tweaks implemented during the offseason, per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. The left-hander focused on his hips and making his front side sturdier, designed to achieve consistency with his release point. With Friday's outcome, Henry staked an early claim to the fifth spot in the rotation, which is seen as a competition, along with Ryne Nelson, Slade Cecconi and Bryce Jarvis.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Competing for rotation

Henry and Ryne Nelson are expected to compete for the final spot in the rotation, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Henry had a decent run at the back end of the rotation during the 2023 season, taking over when Madison Bumgarner was designated for assignment in April before an elbow injury cut short his season. While Henry was healthy by September, he was not added to the postseason roster for any of the playoff rounds. The 26-year-old left-hander recorded a 5-4 record and 4.57 ERA over 136 innings (17 appearances, 16 starts) with 100 strikeouts and 56 walks in 2023.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Throws bullpen session

Henry (elbow) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Henry is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, but he probably won't be a consideration for the Diamondbacks' postseason roster unless they make a deep run. The 26-year-old left-hander has been on the injured list since late July because of elbow inflammation.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Shifted to 60-day IL

Henry (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday. Henry has been on the 15-day IL since July 30 and will now be ineligible to return until the Diamondbacks' final series of the regular season versus Houston in late September. The move created a spot on the 40-man roster for Nabil Crismatt, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Takes rare loss

Henry (5-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.1 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out five. After going at least 5.2 innings in each of his last four starts, Henry was pulled after 4.1 innings (81 pitches) Sunday. He struggled with the Blue Jays' talented lineup, allowing more hits (seven) Sunday than he had given up (six) in his last two starts combined. The loss was Henry's second of the season and his first since May 11 (10 starts). Henry's taken significant steps forward in his second MLB season, owning a 3.89 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, but he still has room for improvement with strikeouts (6.4 K/9) and limiting power (1.4 HR/9).

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Picks up fourth win

Henry (4-1) earned the win Thursday in Washington after he gave up one run on seven hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out five. The left-hander surrendered a solo homer to Lane Thomas during the third inning but otherwise kept the Nationals off the board to notch his fifth quality start of the year. Henry has taken advantage of favorable matchups against Cleveland and Washington in his past two starts with just three runs allowed across 13 frames, but he lines up for a tougher test next week versus Tampa Bay.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Solid in no-decision

Henry allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Saturday. Henry had given up five runs in each of his last two starts before this quality start. Andres Gimenez had a solo home run and a bases-loaded walk to account for the runs on Henry's line. While he went a third straight outing without a win, the southpaw trimmed his ERA to 4.66 with a 1.39 WHIP and 36:22 K:BB over 56 innings across 11 appearances (10 starts). Henry's lined up for a road start in Washington next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Turns in another forgettable outing

Henry didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 9-8 win over the Phillies, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out six. Henry has now allowed five runs in each of his last two starts without completing five innings in either one of them. The southpaw showed flashes of greatness in his seven-inning scoreless performance May 31 against the Rockies, but he hasn't been able to consistently put it all together this year. The second-year pitcher currently sports an unimpressive 4.86 ERA and 1.38 ERA.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Hit hard by Nationals

Henry did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings in a 10-5 victory over Washington. He struck out two. Henry allowed a season-high five runs Tuesday, giving up four in just one swing of the bat as Stone Garrett swatted a grand slam in the first inning. He also tied his shortest start of the campaign after getting pulled in the fifth at 81 pitches. The 24-year-old has been excellent at Chase Field, sporting a 2.49 ERA across 25.1 innings compared to a 6.75 ERA over 20 innings on the road. However, he is tentatively scheduled to make his next start against the Tigers in Detroit.
