Logan O'Hoppe had an intriguing yet incomplete debut season with the Angels. He got off to a great start hitting .283 with 4 homers and 13 RBIs in the first few weeks of the season before a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder put him on the shelf until late August. He was a fantasy monster in the final month of the season with 9 homers, 16 runs, and 15 RBIs down the stretch from the catching position. So far, O'Hoppe has hit lefties (.293) much better than righties (.220) but the overall numbers in an abbreviated season are certainly enticing. O'Hoppe is in the lineup more for his offensive upside than his defensive abilities as he is a liability behind the plate in controlling the running game and is still learning to be a better pitch framer. The potential for a 25-30 homer season is in his bat, but the upside here certainly comes with risks of his defensive liabilities costing him at bats unless he DH's more now with Ohtani's departure.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Gets first day off

O'Hoppe is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. He'll give way to Matt Thaiss behind the dish after catching each of the Angels' first three games of the season while going 3-for-7 with a pair of walks, an RBI and a run scored. Angels manager Ron Washington said in spring training that he's hopeful to get O'Hoppe between 125 to 135 starts at catcher this season, and the 24-year-old is roughly on pace thus far with three starts through four games.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Aims for 125-to-135 catcher starts

Angels manager Ron Washington said Thursday that he's hoping to have O'Hoppe make 125-to-135 starts at catcher this season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. It's a rough estimate by the skipper, and O'Hoppe could potentially make some additional starts at designated hitter. The 24-year-old backstop missed nearly four months with a torn labrum in his left shoulder last season but offered plenty of thump when in the lineup with 14 homers in just 51 games. Nine of those 14 longballs came in September. If he can stay healthy in 2024, O'Hoppe offers breakout potential.

The catcher has four homers and three multi-hit efforts across his last four contests. For the season, the 23-year-old rookie is up to 10 long balls, 22 RBI, 13 runs scored, five doubles and a .242/.296/.524 slash line through 35 contests.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Clubs late homer

O'Hoppe went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Athletics. O'Hoppe went yard in the ninth inning for his sixth homer of the year, though it had no bearing on the outcome. The catcher was the only Angel with multiple hits in this game. O'Hoppe is batting just .150 (6-for-40) since he returned Aug. 18 from a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. The top prospect is at a .226/.284/.452 slash line over 102 plate appearances this season.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Sitting out nightcap

O'Hoppe isn't in the Angels' lineup for the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader against Cincinnati, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Possible waiver wire pickups

O'Hoppe has gone 0 for 9 in two games since returning from a four-month absence for a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, bringing his season stat line down to size, but you should know he was batting .283 with an .886 OPS before then. That's because he was one of the only rookies to give us anything worthwhile in April, and seeing as it was at a weak position, his roster rate might not have dipped far below its 76 percent peak if we had any inkling he was returning. At the time, the injury was presumed to be a season-ender, but now that we know it's not, he has a chance to pick up where he left off. Again, the injury was to his non-throwing shoulder, meaning the one that doesn't supply his power. Meanwhile, he hit .375 (9 for 24) with three doubles on his rehab assignment.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Resting during afternoon game

O'Hoppe will be on the bench for the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against Tampa Bay, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. O'Hoppe returned Friday from a shoulder injury which at one point seemed likely to keep him out for the entire season. The Angels are no doubt thrilled to have the young catcher back in action, but he was never going to be asked to start two games in one day even if he hadn't just returned from injury. Matt Thaiss starts behind the plate in the matinee, but O'Hoppe will likely return to the lineup for the nightcap.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Hitless in return

O'Hoppe went 0-for-5 in a loss to the Rays on Friday. O'Hoppe made a quicker-than-expected return to the majors Friday following a stay on the 60-day injured list due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The 23-year-old showed some rust with the hitless performance, though that shouldn't prevent him from working as the Angels' primary catcher moving forward. The team designated Chad Wallach for assignment upon O'Hoppe's return, and backup backstop Matt Thaiss has struggled thus far in August, going 4-for-31 at the plate.

O'Hoppe will start at catcher and bat fifth against the Rays following a four-month absence to heal a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. The young backstop had posted an .886 OPS with four homers and 13 RBI in 16 games (53 plate appearances) prior to the April 20 injury, and he slashed .375/.464/.500 across 28 plate appearances on his recent eight-game minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Beginning rehab stint Tuesday

O'Hoppe (shoulder) said Monday that he's starting a rehab assignment with Single-A Inland Empire on Tuesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Angels manager Phil Nevin stated last Wednesday that O'Hoppe was on track to start his rehab stint the following week, and that has come to fruition with the catcher joining the Single-A club Tuesday. O'Hoppe hasn't seen any game action since suffering a torn labrum in a game April 20, and he's expected to need most or all of the 20-day rehab window before he's ready to return to the big club.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Nearing rehab assignment

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Wednesday that O'Hoppe (shoulder) is on track to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. O'Hoppe advanced to taking live batting practice this past weekend as he continues to make a swift recovery from April surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He'll likely stay on the rehab assignment for close to the maximum 20 days to get fully back into form offensively and defensively, but the promising young catcher could be a contributor again for the playoff-hunting Angels by the end of August.
