Rory McIlroy is nearly a decade removed from his last Open Championship victory, but his form suggests he could snap a nine-year drought at the 2023 Open Championship starting on Thursday. McIlroy has posted runner-up and top-seven finishes in the last two majors and won last week's Scottish Open. He is the 21-4 favorite in the 2023 Open Championship odds at Caesars Sportsbook. However, he will have to get past other 2023 Open Championship contenders like Scottie Scheffler (15-2), Jon Rahm (12-1) and Rickie Fowler (12-1). McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn't won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

Top 2023 Open Championship predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2023: Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles at Royal Liverpool and doesn't even crack the top 10. Spieth hasn't won a tournament since April of 2022, and while he has been close to winning a handful of times this season, he has frequently missed cuts when he hasn't been in contention. Since he finished fourth at the Masters, he has two top-five finishes and three missed cuts. He was 29th at the PGA Championship.
Open Championships are notoriously unforgiving for golfers who put themselves in unfavorable situations, which Spieth does all too often. Only twice this season has Spieth hit ahead of the average driving accuracy of the field. He has particularly struggled with pulling the ball, as he ranks 154th in left rough tendency (16.14%) and doesn't look positioned to recover this week if he continues to miss fairways. Another surprise: Tyrell Hatton, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Hatton has quietly been one of the hottest golfers on the PGA Tour, posting seven consecutive top-30 finishes, four of those being top-10s.
He finished sixth at the Scottish Open last week, shooting 9-under-par. The 31-year-old ranks third on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained and fourth in total putting, setting him up for success at Royal Liverpool.
