The Giants plan to recall pitcher Brad Penny and first baseman Brett Pill when rosters expand to 40 on Sept. 1, Bruce Bochy told Jim Bowden of Friday.

Penny struggled in his first stint with the Giants this year, allowing a 6.86 ERA in 21 innings, striking out just six while walking five and allowing three home runs. Penny has lost the ability to miss bats at age 34 -- over his last 200 innings, dating back to 2011, Penny has a strikeout rate of just 3.6 per nine innings.

Pill posted an .881 OPS in 15 games with the Giants last season but didn't take well to more consistent at-bats in 2012, mustering just a .647 mark in 43 games. He owns a .284/.333/.502 line in 59 games in the hitter-friendly Triple-A Pacific Coast League for the Giants' Fresno affiliate.
