  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Placed on 10-day IL

Pina was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Athletics on Thursday with a sprained left wrist.

Pina tweaked his wrist in mid-March and will be out awhile. Carlos Perez will back up Shea Langeliers while Pina recuperates.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Will begin season on IL

Pina was diagnosed with left wrist inflammation Friday and will begin the season on the injured list, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Pina was set to be the Athletics' backup catcher to start the 2023 season. Now that he'll be sitting out for an extended period of time, the A's will have to explore other options to back up Shea Langeliers behind the plate.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Visits wrist specialist

Pina visited a specialist Thursday in Atlanta for his lingering left wrist issue, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

It's the same specialist who conducted Pina's season-ending wrist surgery last May. The results of the review are still pending, but it sounds like the veteran catcher could be facing another extended absence. He had been in line to open the 2023 campaign as the No. 2 catcher in Oakland.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Injures wrist in minors game

Pina's status for Opening Day is in doubt after he injured his left wrist on a swing in a minor-league game, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Pina had been set to return from his calf injury this week, but now he has a new issue to deal with. He'll be evaluated before more is known about his status, but given that he's been out virtually all spring, his readiness for Opening Day seems unlikely. Shea Langeliers is the only other catcher on Oakland's 40-man roster, so the team would have to make a move to replace Pina. Tyler Soderstrom seems unlikely, which could point to Kyle McCann.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Getting closer to return

Pina (calf) ran the bases prior to Sunday's Cactus League matchup against the Padres and came away without setbacks, the team's official site reports.

Pina's activity level Sunday was certainly encouraging, and he's also continued to take at-bats at the Athletics' minor-league complex in order to keep up his timing at the plate. Manager Mark Kotsay noted Sunday the team is targeting Tuesday's game versus the White Sox for Pina's return to game action.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Makes some progress Tuesday

Pina (calf) took five at-bats at the Athletics' minor-league complex Tuesday but did not run the bases, the team's official site reports.

Manager Mark Kotsay labeled Pina's activity level Tuesday as a sign of more solid progress for the veteran backstop, who made his one and only Cactus League appearance to date back on Feb. 25. Kotsay didn't express concern about the long layoff affecting Pina's readiness for the regular season, remarking there was still "plenty of time" for him to maintain his timing at the plate and conditioning in minor-league camp.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Nursing calf soreness

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Wednesday that Pina will be held out of Cactus League action until at least this weekend due to calf soreness, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Pina continues to go through workouts but will take at least a few days off from games. The veteran catcher is slated to serve as Shea Langeliers' backup to begin the season but could get pushed aside once to prospect Tyler Soderstrom is deemed ready for the big leagues.

  • Athletics' Manny Pina: Heads to Oakland in three-team deal

The Athletics acquired Pina from Atlanta on Monday in a three-team trade which sent Sean Murphy to Atlanta and William Contreras to Milwaukee, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The A's also received pitchers Kyle Muller, Royber Salinas and Freddy Tarnok plus outfielder Esteury Ruiz, while Atlanta received catcher Sean Murphy and the Brewers received catcher William Contreras and pitchers Joel Payamps and Justin Yeager.

Pina appeared in only five games with Atlanta in 2022 before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery. If healthy, the catcher who hit 13 home runs in 2021 -- albeit with a .293 OBP -- figures to get a fair amount playing time behind the plate in Oakland.

  • Braves' Manny Pina: Transferred to 60-day IL

Pina (wrist) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Pina underwent season-ending wrist surgery in mid-May, so his move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural and will clear a spot on the 40-man roster. William Contreras has served as the No. 2 catcher behind Travis d'Arnaud in Pina's absence.

  • Braves' Manny Pina: Undergoing season-ending surgery

Manager Brian Snitker said Wednesday that Pina will undergo season-ending wrist surgery, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

The 34-year-old has been sidelined since late April due to left wrist inflammation, but he'll miss the rest of 2022 after further testing revealed ligament and cartilage damage. Pina will now shift his focus toward rehabbing for the 2023 season, while William Contreras should continue to serve as the No. 2 catcher behind Travis d'Arnaud.

  • Braves' Manny Pina: Placed on 10-day IL

Pina was placed on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation Thursday, retroactive to April 25.

Pina didn't appear in the last two games, and he was apparently unavailable due to his wrist injury. He'll be eligible to return as early as May 6 against the Brewers, but it's not yet clear how much time he'll need to recover. William Contreras was recalled by Atlanta to serve as the No. 2 catcher in Pina's absence.

  • Braves' Manny Pina: Rejoins lineup

Pina (wrist) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Nationals.

Pina wasn't available for Atlanta's Grapefruit League finale April 5 due to a sore left wrist, but the team's decision to carry him on the season-opening 28-man roster seemingly implied that the injury wasn't anything worrisome. Travis d'Arnaud or William Contreras had started behind the plate in each of Atlanta's first four games, but with both resting Monday, Pina will enter the lineup for his 2022 debut.

  • Braves' Manny Pina: Dealing with wrist injury

Pina was scratched from the lineup ahead of Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays due to a sore left wrist.

Pina won't be available for Atlanta's spring finale and can be viewed as day-to-day as Thursday's Opening Day game against the Reds approaches. Atlanta plans to carry two other catchers -- Travis d'Arnaud and William Contreras -- on its Opening Day roster, so the team would have adequate coverage at the position even if Pina isn't available for the four-game series versus Cincinnati.

  • Braves' Manny Pina: Signs with Atlanta

Pina joined Atlanta on a two-year, $8 million contract Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Pina had a strange season at the plate in 2021. His .162 BABIP limited his batting average to just .189, but he had a nearly average 95 wRC+ thanks to a career-best .250 ISO and hit 13 homers in 208 plate appearances. He's mostly performed at a backup level throughout his career and should fill that role behind Travis d'Arnaud for at least two more seasons and possibly a third, as Atlanta also gets a $4 million team option for 2024 as part of the deal.

  • Brewers' Manny Pina: Smacks homer in win

Pina went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Cardinals.

Pina smashed a solo shot off Andrew Miller in the seventh to provide Milwaukee with an insurance run Wednesday night. While Omar Narvaez (the Brewers' primary catcher) is hitting just .194 with no home runs in September, Pina has gotten hot. The backup backstop is hitting .269 with four long balls over that same span. Late September is not an opportune time to be messing around with your battery, but if Pina keeps hitting like this, expect to see him get some at-bats in the postseason.

  • Brewers' Manny Pina: Launches two homers

Pina went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs and a walk in Saturday's win over the Cubs.

Pina has three home runs over his last four games and now has 12 in what has been a career-best season for the backstop in terms of power. He doesn't bring much else to the table as he's hitting only .201 through 67 games, though he does have a .771 OPS thanks to a career-best .459 slugging percentage.

  • Brewers' Manny Pina: Homers, drives in three

Pina went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBI in Sunday's 11-1 win against Cleveland.

In Pina's first start since he was activated from the injured list, he wasted no time making an impact. He knocked an RBI single in the second inning followed by a two-run shot in the third. It was his first multi-hit game since Aug. 14, and he bumped his slash line up to .195/.298/.422 with 10 homers and 30 RBI through 178 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Manny Pina: Returns from injured list

Pina (oblique) was activated off the injured list Friday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Pina's oblique issue wound up sidelining him for less than two weeks. He'll return to his role backing up Omar Narvaez behind the plate, with Luke Maile optioned to clear a roster spot.

  • Brewers' Manny Pina: Eyeing weekend return

Manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that Pina (oblique) will likely be activated from the 10-day injured list at some point during the Brewers' upcoming weekend series in Cleveland, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Pina is eligible to return from the IL on Wednesday, but the Brewers will give him a few more days to recover from left oblique tightness. Once reinstated, Pina will displace Luke Maile as the top backup to No. 1 catcher Omar Narvaez.
