Taillon (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Marlins, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over five innings. Taillon didn't show any signs of rust in his first start of the campaign, holding the Marlins to a Bryan De La Cruz solo homer in the fourth inning. It's an encouraging effort from the 32-year-old right-hander, who went 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA in an inconsistent 2023 season. He's currently in line to face the Astros at home in his next start.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Activated from IL
The Cubs reinstated Taillon (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Taillon would have made his season debut Thursday against Miami, however the game was postponed due to rain. The 32-year-old right-hander will now start Friday after making two rehab appearances, during which he surrendered four runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts across 6.1 innings. Hayden Wesneski was optioned to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Thursday's start rained out
Taillon (back) and the Cubs won't play the Marlins on Thursday due to inclement weather, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Taillon had been scheduled to make his season debut Thursday, but rain will cause the 32-year-old righty to wait just a bit longer. Thursday's game will be made up with a doubleheader Saturday, and Taillon will presumably get a chance to start Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Making season debut Thursday
Taillon (back) will be activated from the 15-day injured list and is listed as the Cubs' probable starting pitcher for Thursday's series opener versus the Marlins at Wrigley Field. Taillon might operate with some light restrictions in his season debut, as he was capped at 3.2 innings and 68 pitches in his second and final rehab start with Triple-A Iowa this past Friday. Ben Brown has delivered a pair of strong starts in his two outings as the No. 5 member of the Cubs rotation, but unless manager Craig Counsell elects to expand the rotation to six men or decides to bump veteran Kyle Hendricks out of a starting role, the rookie could lose out on a spot once Taillon is activated.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Will make season debut next week
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that Taillon (back) will return from the 15-day injured list to make his next start in the majors, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Taillon covered 3.2 scoreless innings and threw 68 pitches in his final rehab start Friday with Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs haven't yet determined which day Taillon will pitch, but he could be activated from the IL as soon as Wednesday in Arizona.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Struggles in rehab start
Taillon (back) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over 2.2 innings in his first rehab start with Double-A Tennessee on Sunday. Taillon struck out four and got his pitch count up to 52. From a results perspective, it's not the outing Taillon and the Cubs were looking for, but he'll get another rehab start or two to sharpen things up before rejoining the Cubs' rotation. Taillon didn't pitch at all during spring training due a strained back.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Moves to IL
The Cubs placed Taillon (back) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Taillon resumed facing hitters earlier this week, but after failing to pitch in the Cactus League while he recovered from a back strain, he'll need some time to build up before he's ready to make his 2024 debut. He's tentatively scheduled to face hitters again Friday before potentially heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment or pitching in simulated games at extended spring training in Arizona.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Throwing live BP Monday
Taillon (back) will throw one inning of live batting practice Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He'll then face hitters again Friday and, if that goes well, will make an appearance in a minor-league game after that. Taillon is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-April with his back injury, and a clearer timetable for his return won't be available until he makes some rehab appearances.... See More ... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Out until mid-April
Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced Friday that Taillon (back) will begin the season on the injured list and won't be ready to return until at least mid-April, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. The right-hander only recently resumed mound work after recovering from the back tightness that scratched him from a spring start March 9, so it's not a shock he won't be ready to begin the regular season. Taillon is throwing a bullpen session Friday and will need some time to build up to a starter's workload, so a mid-April return is likely a best-case scenario.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Throws off mound Wednesday
Taillon (back) threw a 10-pitch, touch-and-feel bullpen session Wednesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Taillon is finally ready to ease back into mound work after a lower-back issue cropped up nearly two weeks ago. The right-hander has not made any official game appearances this spring and it seems unlikely that he'll be ready for one before the Cactus League schedule runs out. He will begin the season on the injured list, with a potential timetable available later on as he continues to ramp back up.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Nearing mound work
Taillon said Sunday his back has responded well to rest and treatment, and he plans to throw off a mound Tuesday or Wednesday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. The right-hander's back didn't initially respond well after he was scratched from his start March 9 due to back tightness, but his status has apparently improved significantly over the past few days. Taillon has yet to see game action this spring as he focused on his mechanics early in camp, so even if completely healthy he may not be fully ramped up for the start of the regular season.... Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Could miss Opening Day
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Sunday that Taillon's availability for Opening Day is in jeopardy with the right-hander having shown little improvement in his recovery from a lower back injury since being scratched ahead of Saturday's scheduled Cactus League start against the Rockies, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. While Counsell noted that the Cubs aren't yet concerned about Taillon potentially facing a long-term absence, the 32-year-old will be sent in for further testing as the organization looks to get a clearer picture of the injury. Taillon has yet to pitch in a Cactus League game this spring, but he hadn't been shut down from activity prior to being scratched Saturday, as he had been building up in simulated games. However, if Taillon isn't able to quickly move past the back issue within the next week, a stint on the injured list to begin the season would become an increasingly likely outcome. If Taillon is on the shelf at the start of the season, the Cubs could open up a rotation spot for one of Javier Assad, Drew Smyly or Hayden Wesneski.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Dealing with back tightness
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Taillon was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Rockies due to lower-back tightness, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Taillon's back tightened up on him during pregame warmups, and Counsell said the Cubs should have an update on Taillon's status and return timeline Sunday. Taillon has yet to appear in a game this spring and is coming off a 4.84 ERA season -- the highest mark of his seven-year career.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Scratched from spring start
Taillon will no longer start the Cubs' Cactus League game against Colorado on Saturday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. The reason for Taillon's late scratch is unclear, but the 32-year-old righty will have to wait a bit longer to make his spring debut nonetheless. Thomas Pannone will start against the Rockies in Taillon's place.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Cactus League debut delayed
Taillon hasn't pitched in a Cactus League game yet this spring, as he's working on repeating his mechanics to keep from striding and landing open, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He had a good second half with the Cubs last year (3.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP), so it's a little concerning that he showed up to camp with mechanical issues. Taillon was scheduled to throw a simulated game Monday, so he is at least healthy enough to throw at full strength, even though he has also dealt with calf tightness this spring. If all went well Monday, the plan is for Taillon to get into a Cactus League game this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Goes six scoreless in win
Taillon (8-10) earned the win Friday, allowing four hits and four walks over six scoreless innings against Colorado. He struck out seven. Taillon didn't have his best command, but all four hits he allowed were singles in what wound up being a 6-0 shutout victory for the host Cubs. The 31-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA from 5.27 to 5.05 in the process and will look to push it below 5.00 in his final regular-season start next week at Milwaukee.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Next start pushed back
Taillon is not scheduled to start during the three-game series with the Pirates that begins Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Taillon would have taken the ball against the Pirates had he remained on regular rest, but the Cubs announced their starters for the three-game set Monday, and Taillon was not among them. It remains to be seen if he will be pushed back or skipped altogether, but don't expect to see him on the mound until Friday at the earliest.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Takes 10th loss Wednesday
Taillon (7-10) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rockies. He walked one and struck out five. Coors Field is a notoriously tough venue for pitchers, and Taillon endured his share of struggles, as he took a 10th loss in a season for the second time in his seven-year MLB career. The righty has disappointed in his first campaign with the Cubs, as he now has a 5.27 ERA after posting a 3.91 ERA for the Yankees in 2022. Taillon will look for better results in his next outing, which is tentatively set for Sept. 20 against the Pirates at home, which looks like an easier spot.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Allows two homers in loss
Taillon (7-10) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings against Colorado. He struck out five. Taillon looked sharp early, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced on the afternoon. However, he began to struggle as the game went on. He surrendered five runs between the fourth and fifth innings, though two of those runs wouldn't be charged to him on account of a fielding error by Ian Happ. The right-hander has now lost his last four decisions and has given up multiple home runs in three of his last four outings. On a positive note, he holds a 26:2 K:BB over that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Twirls six shutout innings
Taillon threw six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts but did not factor into the decision Friday as the Cubs lost to the Diamondbacks. He allowed one hit and one walk. Taillon stymied the Diamondbacks and completing his six shutout innings in a tidy 77 pitches while generating 12 swinging strikes, but he got out-dueled by Zac Gallen. Those whiffs led to a 38.9 percent CSW rate on the afternoon for Taillon, well above his 25.8 percent rate on the season coming into this start. It was a welcome turnaround for the right-hander after he posted an ugly 7.86 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 26.1 innings over his five prior starts.... See More ... See Less
