Astros' Dixon Machado: Set to miss several weeks
Manager Joe Espada said Saturday that Machado has a Grade 2 quadriceps strain and could miss the remainder of camp, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Machado sustained the quadriceps injury in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He received a non-roster invitation to spring training and this setback likely derails any slim chances he had of making the Opening Day roster. Machado played 74 games with Triple-A Sugar Land in 2023 and slashed .230/.369/.356 with seven home runs and 33 RBI over 293 plate appearances.

Astros' Dixon Machado: Dealing with quad injury
Astros manager Joe Espada said that Machado suffered a right quadricep injury in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Marlins in Grapefruit League play, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
The 32-year-old infielder suffered the injury while running the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning and was replaced in the bottom of the inning. Espada said Machado will be re-evaluated Thursday before the team knows more about the extent of the injury. Machado is attending camp as a non-roster invitee but is a long shot to crack the Astros' Opening Day roster.

Machado, 31, had a .724 OPS with seven homers over 74 games with Triple-A Sugar Land this season. He has a career .577 OPS over parts of five seasons in the majors and will offer the Astros some veteran infield depth.

Machado spent almost all of last season in Triple-A, where he slashed .291/.372/.390 over 522 plate appearances. He had a solid spring as well and could contribute off the bench for Houston if he continues to succeed in the minors, but he would have to be added to the 40-man roster first.

Machado's deal includes an invitation to big-league camp. The 30-year-old has a strong defensive reputation but offers very little at the plate, hitting .226/.285/.292 in 177 career major-league games. He's unlikely to earn anything more than a bench role in Houston and would have minimal fantasy value even if he manages to secure a roster spot.

Machado cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Machado was designated for assignment by the Giants over the weekend but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 30-year-old started five games at shortstop for San Francisco while Brandon Crawford and Thairo Estrada were briefly on the injured list and went 3-for-15 with a walk and a run.

Machado will pick up his fifth consecutive start, but it has more to do with the Giants' lack of available alternatives at the position than a result of his performance. He's gone 2-for-12 with a walk and a run scored through his first four contests. The Giants are off Friday before returning to action Saturday in Oakland, where top shortstop Brandon Crawford (knee) is expected to come off the injured list and rejoin the lineup. Machado will likely move to a bench role at that point, if he's not moved off the active roster entirely.

Giants' Dixon Machado: Shipped to San Francisco
The Giants acquired Machado from the Cubs on Sunday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Raynel Espinal, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Machado was subsequently added to the Giants' major-league roster and will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Cubs, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Thairo Estrada was placed on the 7-day concussion IL on Sunday, so the Giants opted to trade for Machado since Brandon Crawford (knee) is also on the shelf. Machado has hit well at the Triple-A level this year with a .312/.402/.394 slash line in 86 games, and he's now poised to see most of the reps at shortstop for San Francisco until one of Estrada or Crawford is cleared to return.

Cubs' Dixon Machado: Invited to Cubs' camp
Machado signed with the Cubs as a non-roster invitee Friday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.
Machado played parts of four seasons at the MLB level from 2015 to 2018, showing a strong glove but a bat which wasn't nearly up to par, as he hit .227/.285/.295 with two homers and three steals in 505 trips to the plate. He's spent the last two years playing for the Lotte Giants in Korea but didn't do much to change his profile, as his .279/.357/.392 slash line made him merely an average KBO hitter. If he can get his bat up to even below average rather than just plain poor he could earn a bench role with the Cubs in 2022, but he's done little to suggest he'll have much fantasy value.

Machado signed a contract with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization on Thursday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
Machado played 67 games for the Tigers in 2019, but he regressed with a .553 OPS and 41 strikeouts. The 27-year-old has spent portions of the past four seasons in the majors, but he'll begin 2020 in South Korea.

Cubs' Dixon Machado: Ends season on Triple-A IL
Machado was placed on the Triple-A Iowa's 7-day injured list Sept. 2 due to a hamstring issue.
The injury prevented Machado from taking part in the Pacific Coast League playoffs and will cost him a potential callup to the big leagues, as the Cubs may have summoned him for insurance at shortstop with the top two options on the depth chart -- Javier Baez (wrist) and Addison Russell (head/nose) -- banged up. Chicago will instead promote middle-infield prospect Niko Hoerner from Double-A Tennessee to bolster their depth at shortstop.

With Machado on the bench for the fifth time in seven games, it appears safe to say that he has surrendered the everyday role at second base to Niko Goodrum, who will pick up his fourth start in five contests. Machado opened the season on an impressive note with seven doubles in his first 11 games, but he has delivered just seven extra-base hits total in his subsequent 49 appearances. The stark downturn in power has limited Machado to a .546 OPS this season, a 75-point drop from his 2017 mark.
