It would be fair at this point to call the Angels' 2019 signing of Anthony Rendon to a seven-year deal a disaster, as the once-feared slugger has spent more time on the injured list than on the field over his four seasons so far with the club. Over the past three campaigns, Rendon has played in a total of 148 games -- approximately the equivalent of one season -- and posted a modest .701 OPS with 13 homers and 80 RBI. The All-Star hasn't lost his elite eye at the plate, and last year he walked nearly as many times as he struck out (25:27 BB:K), but that isn't going to carry him far in fantasy circles given the diminished power and inability to stay healthy. Shohei Ohtani's departure to the Dodgers opens the door for Rendon to log substantial time at DH next season, giving him a better chance of avoiding more time on the injured list. Still, counting on a bounce-back from a player who will turn 34 in June and who has been a shell of his former self for three years doesn't seem like the wisest investment.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: In leadoff spot for opener

Rendon will start at third base and bat leadoff in Thursday's season opener versus the Orioles. Angels manager Ron Washington toyed with the idea of batting Rendon at the top of the order later on in spring training, and the veteran skipper decided to carry it into the season. Rendon will be followed by Aaron Hicks, Mike Trout and Taylor Ward.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Possible leadoff option

Angels manager Ron Washington said he's experimenting with Rendon batting leadoff in Wednesday's Cactus League game since the team doesn't have an ideal option, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Rendon wouldn't offer much speed at the top of the lineup with just two steals in each of the past two seasons, but he does have a career 11 percent walk rate. The 33-year-old has primarily hit third or fourth since joining the Angels in 2020, but his spot in the order at this point is really secondary. Rendon has played in just 148 games over the past three seasons, and even when available he hasn't been particularly productive with a .701 OPS.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Hitting cleanup in return

Rendon (groin) will start at third base and bat cleanup in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Padres, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. As anticipated, Rendon will make his return to the lineup for the first time in one week after he reported groin discomfort following his most recent spring appearance last Sunday. The missed week of action shouldn't put Rendon too far behind his healthy teammates as Opening Day approaches. Heading into the fifth season of the seven-year, $245 million megadeal he signed with the Angels in December 2019, the 33-year-old Rendon will be looking to bounce back after he posted a career-worst .679 OPS over 183 plate appearances during an injury-shortened 2023 campaign.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Expected back Sunday

Manager Ron Washington said he expects Rendon (groin) to return to the Angels' lineup Sunday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Groin discomfort has prevented Rendon from playing in Cactus League games since Sunday, but it appears his absence won't extend longer than a week. Rendon has logged two hits in 10 at-bats so far this spring while drawing four walks and scoring twice. He posted a .679 OPS last season -- the lowest mark of his 11-year career -- and he hasn't eclipsed 250 plate appearances in a season since joining the Angels in 2020.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Could face live pitching Thursday

Rendon (groin) said that he's showing improvement and may be able to face live pitching in batting practice Thursday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Even if the Angels elect to hold Rendon out of live batting practice Thursday, the veteran third baseman is optimistic that he'll rejoin the Cactus League lineup "soon." He clarified that the groin discomfort he's experiencing is more along the lines of soreness rather than a strain, adding that he's proceeding cautiously just to prevent the issue from worsening and becoming something that plagues him all season.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Going through workout Wednesday

Rendon (groin) will go through a normal workout Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Rendon took it easy for a couple days after feeling some discomfort in his groin Sunday. He's ready to ramp back up again, however, and should return to Cactus League games before long if all goes well. The veteran third baseman is slated to bat cleanup for the Angels this season.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Dealing with groin injury

Rendon reported discomfort in his groin Sunday and will be out through at least Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Manager Ron Washington said he's not too concerned about Rendon's injury but noted the veteran's absence may extend beyond Wednesday if he's not at 100 percent. Rendon is currently 2-for-10 with four walks and two runs scored through six Cactus League games and is in line to serve as the Angels' cleanup hitter once the regular season begins.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Projected to hit cleanup

Angels manager Ron Washington said Thursday that Rendon (lower leg) will be the team's cleanup hitter this season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. That's for days he's not on the injured list, of course. Rendon has played just 200 of a possible 546 games in four seasons with the Angels due to a variety of injuries but doesn't appear to be under any restrictions this spring. It's possible the Angels elect to use him often at designated hitter in 2024 in hopes that it will help keep him on the field.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Not expected back in 2023

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Saturday that Rendon (lower leg) isn't expected to play again before the end of the season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Rendon has been participating in baseball activities since early September as he recovers from a fractured tibia, but Nevin said Rendon hasn't progressed enough to be activated before the end of the year. Rendon will finish 2023 with a .236/.361/.318 slash line to go along with two homers and 22 RBI across 183 plate appearances.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Rehabbing fractured tibia

Rendon (lower leg) revealed Friday that he was diagnosed with a fractured left tibia in August, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. The injury had been called a bone bruise ever since Rendon landed on the IL in mid-July, but at least there is now a bit more clarity as to why he's remained on the shelf. Rendon just recently resumed baseball activities and seems doubtful to return to the Angels' active roster before the end of the season.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Resumes baseball activity

Rendon (lower leg) has been hitting off a tee and running on a treadmill, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Rendon has been on the injured list since July 14 due to a bone bruise in his left shin, and it appears progress is finally being made in his recovery. Rendon will be eligible to return from the IL on Saturday, but given how slow his rehab process has been, there is no guarantee he makes it back before the end of the season.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Little progress

Rendon (lower leg) has not progressed to any on-field work, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. When asked whether Rendon's recovery had progressed, manager Phil Nevin stated, "It depends on which day you ask him. It comes and goes each day." Rendon was shifted to the 60-day injured list Friday, meaning he can't return until Sept. 9. However, his return at that point appears to be in doubt.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Transferred to 60-day IL

Rendon was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. Angels manager Phil Nevin said in late July Rendon would be shut down from baseball activities for at least two weeks after it was discovered he had a deep bone bruise in his left shin. Now that he is on the 60-day IL, the soonest he could return is Sept. 9. Mike Moustakas and Eduardo Escobar will continue to share time at third base in Rendon's place.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Shut down two more weeks

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Saturday that Rendon will be shut down from baseball activities for at least two weeks after an MRI revealed a deep bone bruise in his left shin, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Nevin added that Rendon is dealing with bleeding in the bone, so the veteran third baseman will be rested until at least the first week of August until the team reassesses his condition. Rendon has been on the shelf since July 11 and can safely be ruled out through mid-August, given the buildup process that he'll require following the two-week shutdown period. Mike Moustakas and Eduardo Escobar should continue sharing time at third base for the Halos, though Luis Rengifo could be a factor at the position once second baseman Brandon Drury (shoulder) returns from the injured list.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Yet to begin on-field work

Rendon (shin) had yet to resume on-field workouts as of Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. There have been very few status updates on Rendon since he landed on the injured list July 14 due to a left shin contusion that he suffered the week before the All-Star break. The 33-year-old has appeared in only 43 games for the Angels this season and is slashing just .236/.361/.318 when healthy.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: To IL with shin contusion

Rendon (left shin contusion) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to July 11. Rendon was in the midst of a 4-for-47 (.085 average) slump over his last 14 games before suffering the injury July 4, and he apparently didn't show significant improvement over the All-Star break. Michael Stefanic and Trey Cabbage were added to the active roster to bolster the Angels' infield in the short term.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Sits again Saturday

Rendon (lower leg) remains on the bench for Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Rendon has been out of action since fouling a ball off his shin Tuesday against the Padres. The Angels' break starts a day early, so unless Rendon appears off the bench Saturday, he's already made his final appearance of the first half. Assuming his shin injury is nothing worse than a bruise, he should have ample time to heal by the time the Angels resume play next Friday versus the Astros.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Out again Friday

Rendon (shin) remains out of the lineup Friday. Rendon has been sidelined since fouling a ball off his left shin Tuesday in San Diego. He's appeared in only 43 of a possible 89 games so far this season. Mike Moustakas is covering third base Friday at Dodger Stadium, while Hunter Renfroe will get the start at first base.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Could return Friday

Rendon (shin) could return to the Angels' lineup as soon as Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Rendon is not in Wednesday's lineup after fouling a ball off his left shin Tuesday. The Halos aren't putting him on the injured list yet, though, because he could be ready after the off day Thursday. Rendon will be evaluated the next two days and if it's determined he does need to go on the IL, he'd be eligible to return the second game after the All-Star break.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Sitting out with bruised shin

Rendon (shin) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Padres, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Rendon had to be lifted from Tuesday's game in San Diego due to a left shin contusion after fouling a ball off his leg. The good news is X-rays came back clean and Rendon is still listed on the Angels' lineup card as a reserve, so it appears he'll avoid the injured list. Eduardo Escobar is playing third base Wednesday.
