  • Rangers' Sandy Leon: Remains on roster

Leon went 0-for-2 in Friday's 2-0 win over the Mariners. Leon guided Jon Gray through seven scoreless innings before being replaced by Jonah Heim. For now, Leon survived the return of Mitch Garver from the injured list. Once Ezequiel Duran (oblique) is ready, Leon's roster spot could be in jeopardy.

  • Rangers' Sandy Leon: Added to roster

The Rangers selected Leon's contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. Leon will serve as Jonah Heim's backup while Mitch Garver (knee) is sidelined. The 34-year-old has a career .592 OPS over parts of 11 major-league seasons.

  • Rangers' Sandy Leon: Re-signs with Rangers

Leon re-signed with the Rangers on a minor-league contract Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Leon requested and was given his release Monday but is quickly back in the organization on a re-worked deal. The veteran catcher will give the club some quality depth at Triple-A Round Rock.

  • Sandy Leon: Let go by Texas

The Rangers released Leon on Monday. The Rangers are planning on carrying only two catchers (Jonah Heim and Mitch Garver) on the Opening Day roster and have another backstop with more upside (Sam Huff) waiting in the wings at Triple-A Round Rock, so Leon will exit the organization and pursue options elsewhere. Even if he finds his way onto an MLB roster at some point in 2023, Leon likely won't serve as anything more than No. 2 option behind the dish.

  • Rangers' Sandy Leon: Lands NRI from Rangers

Leon (knee) signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Leon, who underwent meniscus surgery on his right knee in October, is probably in line to begin the season at Triple-A Round Rock unless the Rangers are willing to carry three catchers. The 33-year-old saw action in 33 games for the Guardians and Twins in 2022, producing a .509 OPS.

  • Twins' Sandy Leon: Done for season

Leon was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday and will undergo right knee meniscus surgery. This obviously ends Leon's season. He hit .169 with zero home runs in 34 games. Ryan Jeffers (thumb) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Twins' Sandy Leon: Back in action Thursday

Leon (knee) will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Royals. Leon was lifted early Monday in the Twins' series finale with the Guardians due to knee inflammation, but a day out of the lineup was apparently all he needed for the issue to resolve itself. The defensive-minded backstop owns a .170 batting average since the beginning of August and won't warrant much attention from a fantasy standpoint.

  • Twins' Sandy Leon: Tweaks knee Monday

Leon was removed in the fourth inning of Monday's game against the Guardians with right knee inflammation, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Leon struck out in his lone at-bat before departing for the contest. Caleb Hamilton came off the bench to replace Leon, the Twins' No. 2 catcher who had received the start with top backstop Gary Sanchez getting a maintenance day.

  • Twins' Sandy Leon: Added to active roster

Leon's contract was selected by the Twins on Wednesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Leon was traded from the Guardians to the Twins on Tuesday, and he'll join Minnesota's active roster as part of a move after Caleb Hamilton was sent down. Leon appeared in nine major-league games for Cleveland earlier in the year and hit .133 with six walks and four strikeouts. He's starting behind the dish and batting eighth Wednesday but should serve mainly as catching depth behind Gary Sanchez.

  • Twins' Sandy Leon: Lands in Minnesota organization

The Twins acquired Leon from the Guardians on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Ian Hamilton. The move restores some catching depth in the upper levels of the Twins' minor-league system after Caleb Hamilton was promoted from Triple-A St. Paul following Ryan Jeffers' (thumb) placement on the injured list shortly before the All-Star break. Leon, who is now with his third organization of the season, will report to St. Paul.

  • Guardians' Sandy Leon: Outrighted to Triple-A

Leon was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Leon was designated for assignment by Cleveland on Friday but will remain in the organization after clearing waivers. Over 26 Triple-A games this year, he's hit .222 with a homer, seven RBI and five runs.

  • Guardians' Sandy Leon: Designated for assignment

Leon was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Friday. Leon served as catching depth over the last week and a half but will exit the roster after Austin Hedges (concussion) was reinstated from the injured list. Leon hit .133 with six walks and four strikeouts during his time on the major-league roster.

  • Guardians' Sandy Leon: Three walks in win

Leon went 0-for-1 with three walks in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Twins. Leon rejoined the Guardians -- the team he spent the 2020 season with -- in a trade with the Reds on Tuesday, and he's promptly played in three straight games. The veteran catcher is still in search of his first hit, going 0-for-4 with three walks and a strikeout so far. He'll likely split time with Luke Maile while Austin Hedges (concussion) is on the injured list. Leon hit a meager .222/.321/.306 in 26 games with Triple-A Louisville, so he shouldn't be expected to provide much offense in the majors.

  • Reds' Sandy Leon: Inks minor-league deal with Reds

Leon signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Leon opted out of his contract with the Guardians at the end of March after failing to land a spot on the team's Opening Day roster, and he'll now presumably head to Triple-A Louisville. He appeared in 84 major-league games with the Marlins last year and should be one of the top candidates to be called up if Tyler Stephenson or Aramis Garcia deal with injuries this year.

  • Sandy Leon: Exercises opt-out clause

Leon exercised an opt-out clause in his contract Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Leon went 0-for-9 with an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts across six spring games this year, and he was informed Thursday that he wouldn't make the Guardians' Opening Day roster. Rather than reporting to the minors, the 33-year-old will become a free agent ahead of the regular season in hopes that he'll be able to land a spot elsewhere on a major-league roster.

  • Guardians' Sandy Leon: Catches on with Guardians

The Guardians signed Leon on Monday to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. Austin Hedges is the only MLB-ready catcher left on Cleveland's 40-man roster after the team declined Roberto Perez's $7 million option for 2022 earlier this month, so Leon helps restore some depth at the position. Though he won't be added to the roster immediately, Leon should get the opportunity to compete for the No. 2 spot on the Guardians' depth chart at catcher heading into Opening Day. Leon logged 220 plate appearances for the Marlins in 2021, slashing .183/.237/.267 with four home runs, 15 runs and 14 RBI.

  • Marlins' Sandy Leon: Cracks ninth-inning homer

Leon went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Nationals. Leon took Washington reliever Ryne Harper deep with one out in the ninth inning to pull the Nationals to within two runs, chasing Harper from the game in the process. It was the fourth homer of the season for the veteran catcher, who hadn't produced an extra-base hit since Aug. 10, a string of 17 straight games. He's hitting just .188 with a .510 OPS in 213 plate appearances this season.

  • Marlins' Sandy Leon: Receives rare start

Leon will start at catcher and bat seventh Sunday against the Reds, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. He'll crack the starting nine for the first time since Aug. 10. After the Marlins acquired Alex Jackson from Atlanta at the July 30 trade deadline and added him to the active roster shortly thereafter, Leon has fallen from second to third on the depth chart at catcher behind Jackson and Jorge Alfaro.

  • Marlins' Sandy Leon: Delivers three-run homer

Leon went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and an additional RBI during Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Orioles. The 32-year-old caught for Sandy Alcantara in Baltimore and launched his third home run of the season. Leon has struggled for the most part offensively with a .487 OPS in 2021, though he's 5-for-18 with a homer, a double, five RBI and three runs in his past six appearances. Neither he nor Jorge Alfaro have done enough at the plate to warrant fantasy consideration.

  • Marlins' Sandy Leon: Picking up rare start

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Leon will catch for starting pitcher Jordan Holloway in Wednesday's game at Philadelphia, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Leon will crack the starting nine for only the second time in 12 games. Jorge Alfaro is locked in as the Marlins' clear top catcher, and opportunities will likely remain few and far between for Leon while Alfaro is healthy.
