Player Outlook
Jace Peterson's 430 plate appearances in 2023 were his most since 2015. Unfortunately, the 33-year-old's .611 OPS over that many plate appearances was a drain to fantasy rosters. The season was salvaged by a career-high 15 steals. His plate appearances dried up after being traded to Arizona, a team that needed an everyday third baseman and ranked 27th in OPS from the position. Peterson knows how to work a walk and create chances on the bases, but the bat isn't corner-infielder worthy. He's not going to get a chance to compete for a starting job in 2024, as the Diamondbacks' signed Eugenio Suarez to handle the hot corner. If the D-backs don't address the need for a regular designated hitter, Peterson could be part of that mix, but like corner infield, the bat doesn't profile at DH. Most likely, he'll serve as a backup utility infielder, a left-handed bat off the bench and pinch runner.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Gets starts at shortstop

Peterson has started at shortstop in spring games Tuesday and Wednesday while Geraldo Perdomo (lower body) was rested. Perdomo tweaked his lower half while sliding in Monday's game and has not played since, with the Diamondbacks giving him time off until the weekend. Peterson is among several players in camp capable of playing shortstop, including Elvis Andrus, Kevin Newman and Emmanuel Rivera.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Back in action Monday

Peterson (wrist) is starting at third base and batting second for the Diamondbacks on Monday in his return to Cactus League play. • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Battling wrist injury

Peterson experienced inflammation in his right wrist Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Peterson had imaging done on his wrist that revealed no structural damage. • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Added back to roster

Peterson was added to the Diamondbacks' World Series roster Friday. Peterson was part of Arizona's roster for the Wild Card Round before being removed for the NLCS, but he's now back on the roster for the Fall Classic. Slade Cecconi -- who replaced Peterson on the NLCS roster -- has been removed. Evan Longoria is just 5-for-37 with 17 strikeouts this postseason, so it's possible Peterson sees some action at third base, at least against right-handed pitching.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Absent from NLCS roster

Peterson is not on the Diamondbacks' NLCS roster. Peterson was a late addition to Arizona's NL Wild Card roster as a replacement for Jake McCarthy (oblique) and he wound up receiving just one plate appearance combined between that series and the NLDS. The Diamondbacks are going with pitcher Slade Cecconi on their NLCS roster over Peterson.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Added to NL Wild Card Series roster

Peterson was added to Arizona's roster on Tuesday for its NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Brewers, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Peterson will give the D-backs depth at multiple positions as they look to get past Milwaukee.

Peterson did not make the roster for the Diamondbacks' NL Wild Card Series matchup against Milwaukee. Acquired from the Athletics at the Aug. 1 trade deadline, Peterson wound up slashing just .183/.276/.258 with zero homers and four steals in 41 games (106 plate appearances) for Arizona. • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Logs fourth steal

Peterson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Astros. Peterson has just four steals this season, two of which have come over his last three games. He's seen spotty playing time in September, going 8-for-39 (.205) with four walks over 16 contests this month. The third baseman is slashing .213/.304/.310 with six home runs, 37 RBI, 35 runs scored, 10 doubles and four triples over 133 games between Arizona and Oakland this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: On bench Monday

Peterson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees. Emmanuel Rivera will get the nod at third base in place of Peterson.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Returns to bench

Peterson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets. Since being acquired from Oakland on July 31, Peterson has mostly served as a strong-side platoon option at third base, but he'll likely have to settle for more of a utility role moving forward. With both second baseman Ketel Marte (knee) and shortstop Jordan Lawlar (hand) back in the lineup Monday after one-game absences, Peterson will retreat to the bench after he manned the keystone Sunday. Geraldo Perdomo has seemingly supplanted Peterson as the Diamondbacks' preferred option at third base.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Moves to bench Sunday

Peterson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. The lefty-hitting Peterson regularly sits out against southpaws, but he'll head to the bench Sunday even though right-hander Graham Ashcraft is on the hill for Cincinnati. Evan Longoria will pick up a start at third base in place of Peterson, who is slashing .178/.288/.267 in 20 games with Arizona since being acquired from Oakland on July 31.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Pulled for pinch hitter

Peterson started at third base and went 0-for-1 with a walk in Tuesday's 6-3 win over Texas. The lefty-batting Peterson usually starts against right-handers, as was the case Tuesday, but his track record against southpaws makes him vulnerable to being pinch hit for against left-handed relievers. That happened again, as Buddy Kennedy replaced him when Brock Burke entered the contest. Peterson is slashing .170/.245/.170 over 52 plate appearances against lefties this season.

Buddy Kennedy will start at third base and bat sixth while Peterson sits.
