  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Punches out six

Giolito allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out six across three innings in Cactus League action against the Cubs on Friday. Giolito took the mound for the second time this spring, and he now has nine strikeouts across five innings of work. He's looking for a bounceback season after posting a disappointing 4.90 ERA in 2022. Per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Giolito lost weight this season after intentionally bulking up ahead of the 2022 campaign. In addition, Van Schouwen noted that Giolito is a proponent of the newly implemented pitch clock, because he feels it helps him maintain a rhythm on the mound.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Reaches deal for 2023

Giolito agreed to a one-year, $10.4 million contract with the White Sox on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Giolito entered 2022 with a 3.47 ERA across the previous three seasons, but he struggled last year with a 4.90 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 177:61 K:BB in 161.2 innings. Now entering his final season before hitting free agency, the 28-year-old will look to bounce back in a contract year.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Goes seven innings in win

Giolito (11-9) allowed two runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while striking out four over seven innings, earning the win over the Twins on Tuesday. The right-hander threw 61 of 91 pitches for strikes in his final start of the season. He gave up the opening run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning and also yielded an RBI single in the sixth. Giolito finished with three quality starts in his last six outings, and this win snapped his six-start streak without a victory. He posted a 4.90 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 177:61 K:BB through 161.2 innings across 30 starts overall, taking a noticeable step back from the level he displayed over the three previous seasons.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Six more punchouts

Giolito allowed two earned runs on for hits and three walks while striking out six across five innings Thursday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. Giolito allowed four of the first six batters he faced to reach base, which accounted for both of the earned runs against him. However, he settled in from there -- with the exception of his control problems -- and he racked up 12 swinging strikes on 93 total pitches. Giolito has failed to meet expectations this season, though he has maintained a 3.71 ERA with a 31:11 K:BB across 26.2 innings and five starts in September.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Strikes out nine

Giolito allowed three runs on six hits in six innings Friday against the Tigers, striking out nine while walking just one. He did not factor into the decision. From a K:BB perspective, Giolito's night was a strong one, but the outing only served to bring his season-long ERA down to 5.05. The Tigers did all their damage off him early, with a Miguel Cabrera groundout and an Eric Haase single driving in runs in the first inning before Jonathan Schoop launched a solo homer in the second. Giolito settled down after that and exited with the score tied 3-3, but Chicago's bullpen faltered after he left. He's in line to face the Twins both home and away to close out the season.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Yields one run in short outing

Giolito yielded one run on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Tigers on Friday. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Giolito avoided taking his 10th loss despite Detroit winning the game. He gave up an RBI single to Spencer Torkelson in the first inning but looked comfortable the rest of the way. It was Giolito's shortest outing since he was tagged for seven runs against Houston on Aug. 18. He's now sporting a disappointing 5.07 ERA with a 158:55 K:BB through 27 starts. Giolito is lined up to face the Guardians at home next week.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Fans six in quality start

Giolito didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 5-3 win against Oakland, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings. Giolito surrendered one run on three baserunners in the first inning and two more on three hits in the fifth to fall in line for the loss until Chicago rallied with five runs in the ninth inning. Aside from the first and fifth, the 28-year-old faced the minimum and recorded an impressive 19 swinging strikes on 96 pitches. The quality start was Giolito's second in 10 turns, and he still possesses a high 5.18 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 139 innings and 26 starts. He lines up to start again in Cleveland midweek.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Allows two runs over five innings

Giolito (10-9) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings against the Twins. He struck out five. Giolito cruised through four innings and looked like he could record his first scoreless outing since April 8, but it was not meant to be. He served up a fastball on a silver platter to Carlos Correa in the fifth inning, which Correa sent to center field for a two-run home run to put the Twins on the board. Giolito has now allowed 31 runs in 44.2 innings over his last nine starts, causing his ERA to increase to 5.21 on the season. He will look to get back on track next weekend at Oakland.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Gives up three homers

Giolito (8-10) gave up five earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.1 innings to take the loss in a 9-7 defeat against the Royals on Tuesday. The long ball was Giolito's downfall in yet another frustrating performance for the struggling starter, who was chased after giving up three home runs on 89 pitches. Despite tallying four wins in August, Giolito has an ERA of 5.68 this month. His 142 strikeouts in 128 innings so far in 2022 are solid, but not enough to make up for his inflated ratios. Giolito does have an xFIP of 3.65, so there is some hope the veteran's numbers could normalize down the stretch. He is tentatively expected to make his next start against the Twins on Sunday.

Giolito (10-7) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against Baltimore. He struck out three. Giolito's only run allowed came in the fourth on an RBI groundout that scored catcher Adley Rutschman after he doubled to lead off the inning. The 28-year-old's struggles had been more severe than usual lately with a disastrous 7.39 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in 28 innings over his six starts prior to this contest. The righty has been dreadful at home this season with a 6.71 ERA and a .318 average allowed in 53.2 innings, compared to his 3.91 ERA and .259 BAA in 69 innings outside Guaranteed Rate Field.

Entering Thursday's appearance, Giolito had allowed more than three earned runs only once in his last four outings. Despite that solid stretch, Giolito has an ugly 5.34 ERA across 116.1 innings for the season.

Giolito (9-6) earned the win over Detroit on Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over seven innings. Giolito fell behind early when he gave up three runs in the second frame. However, he rebounded to allow only one additional run the rest of the way and got enough run support to pick up the victory. Giolito was effective at missing bats with 17 swinging strikes, and he tied his season-high mark by completing seven innings. The right-hander has won each of his past three starts and has struck out 19 batters over 17 innings during that span.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Gets job done in win

Giolito (8-6) earned the victory Sunday in Texas, striking out five in five innings while allowing a run on six hits and three walks. It wasn't exactly his best outing, but he managed to hold Texas to only one run despite allowing nine baserunners and needing 103 pitches to complete the five frames. He allowed the leadoff man to get on in three of the five innings, and the Rangers recorded a hit in each inning, but Giolito consistently induced a timely groundball to end the threats. The 28-year-old has pitched at least five innings in 11 of his last 12 outings, but his 4.91 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 18 homers allowed in 106.1 innings are a far cry from his output in the previous three seasons. His next start will likely be next weekend against Detroit.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Does enough to win Tuesday

Giolito (7-6) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over five innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Royals. The White Sox established an early lead and Giolito was able to make it stick. He had some trouble in the third inning, which resulted in him needing 94 pitches (64 strikes) to get through five frames. The right-hander hasn't pitched deeper than that in three starts since the All-Star break. He has a 5.06 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 115:39 K:BB across 101.1 innings in 19 starts this year. Giolito is expected to start on the road against the Rangers this weekend.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Early exit Friday

Giolito (6-6) took the loss Friday as the White Sox fell 8-2 to the Guardians, surrendering six runs on nine hits over three innings. He struck out two without walking a batter. The right-hander filled up the strike zone, tossing 48 of 64 pitches for strikes before exiting, but he wasn't fooling anyone as he managed only five swinging strikes. Giolito has been tagged for at least five runs in four of his last seven starts, stumbling to a 6.87 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 34:10 K:BB through 38 innings over that stretch. His inconsistency even in seemingly plus matchups makes him a difficult pitcher to deploy right now in most fantasy formats.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Allows one run in win

Giolito (6-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one unearned run on five hits and one walk over 6.1 innings against the Guardians. He struck out five. Giolito allowed leadoff doubles in the fourth and sixth innings but was able to strand both runners without giving up a run. However, the right-hander got into trouble again in the seventh after giving up a one-out single to Franmil Reyes followed by a full-count walk to Nolan Jones. Reynaldo Lopez replaced Giolito after the walk, but the starter was charged with an unearned run after Reyes scored on a fielding error by Josh Harrison. After surrendering 30 runs during a five-start streak that ended Jun 22, Giolito has given up two or fewer runs in three of his last four outings and has 26 strikeouts across 25 innings during the latter span. The right-hander isn't scheduled to start again until after the All-Star break.

Giolito (6-5) allowed one unearned run on five hits and one walk while striking out five across 6.1 innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Guardians. Giolito shut down the Cleveland lineup and was not charged with an earned run in a start for the first time since Opening Day. He's allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts, but he has also been beaten up for five or more earned runs in three of his last six outings. That inconsistency has led to a 4.69 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 102:32 K:BB across 88.1 innings for Giolito on the season.

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: Cruises to fifth win

Giolito allowed a run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings, earning the win Sunday over the Giants. It wasn't an instant barrage of offense, but the White Sox gave Giolito plenty of support en route to his first win since June 5. He kept the Giants off the board until the sixth inning, when Joc Pederson tagged him for an RBI double. Giolito gave up 26 runs (23 earned) in 27 innings in June, so it's encouraging to see him open July with a positive effort. He has a 4.90 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 89:29 K:BB through 75.1 innings in 14 starts overall. The veteran right-hander is lined up for a home start against the Tigers next week.
