Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Shelved with shoulder inflammation
The Yankees placed Kahnle on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder inflammation.
Kahnle will be shut down for the final week of the regular season, but provided that his injury doesn't prove to be more significant that his current diagnosis of shoulder inflammation, he should be in store for a fairly normal offseason. The veteran righty finishes the 2023 campaign with one win, two saves and 14 holds to go with a 2.66 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 48:19 K:BB across 40.2 innings out of the New York bullpen.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Nabs save in nightcap
Kahnle earned a save against the Red Sox in Game 2 of a twin bill Thursday, walking one batter and striking out four over two scoreless and hitless innings.
Kahnle entered in the eighth inning with New York holding a one-run lead and retired the side in order. Clay Holmes has mostly handled closing duties for the Yankees this season, but with New York tacking on two additional runs in the top of the ninth and Kahnle at just 10 pitches, manager Aaron Boone elected to allow the veteran right-hander to close things out. He did so with ease, striking out three batters around a two-out walk in the final frame to notch his second save of the campaign. Kahnle has been a key piece of New York's bullpen this season, posting a 2.25 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB over 40 innings.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Picks up 10th hold
Kahnle walked one batter and struck out one batter in one inning against the Astros on Saturday to register a hold.
Kahnle worked the seventh frame, issuing a leadoff walk that was quickly wiped out by a double play. The veteran reliever needed 15 total pitches to get through the inning -- his third straight scoreless frame -- while preserving the Yankees' 2-1 lead. Kahnle has emerged as an important part of New York's bullpen since making his campaign debut after returning from injury at the start of June, registering 10 holds and one save while posting a 2.22 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB over 24.1 frames.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Notches save Wednesday
Kahnle earned a save against the Mariners on Wednesday, retiring both batters he faced, including one by strikeout.
Clay Holmes has recently regained a hold on the Yankees' closer position, but he was held out Wednesday after tossing 21 pitches over 1.2 innings the previous night. That allowed Kahnle to get a save opportunity after Michael King allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base in the ninth, and the former got the job done by allowing a sacrifice fly before striking out Eugenio Suarez to end the contest. Kahnle didn't make his season debut until June 2 due to a biceps injury, but he's been outstanding since then, pitching 7.2 scoreless frames with a 9:1 K:BB over eight appearances. He's earned two holds and figures to be one of the team's top high-leverage relievers moving forward.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Hurls scoreless frame in 2023 debut
Kahnle pitched a scoreless inning against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one batter.
Kahnle had been out all season with a biceps injury before he was activated Thursday. The veteran reliever made his campaign debut against the team for which he played last year, though a forearm injury limited him to just 13 regular-season appearances with Los Angeles. Kahnle handled a pretty hefty workload Friday, tossing 29 pitches (17 strikes) and fanning James Outman after allowing a two-out double followed by a walk. The right-hander will likely get a chance to work in high-leverage situations for the Yankees pretty quickly, but with only 15 big-league games under his belt since 2019, he may not pitch in back-to-back contests for awhile.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Activated from 60-day IL
The Yankees activated Kahnle (biceps) from the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Kahnle will join the Yankees' bullpen ahead of their three-game weekend series at Dodger Stadium after missing the first two months of the 2023 regular season due to lingering right biceps tendinitis. He signed a two-year, $11.5 million free-agent contract with New York over the winter and could potentially pitch his way into a share of the team's unsettled closer role.

Kahnle joins Josh Donaldson (hamstring) and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) as Yankees expected to return from the injured list this weekend. Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Still week away from return
Kahnle (biceps) could rejoin the Yankees' bullpen for next weekend's series against the Dodgers, manager Aaron Boone told Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News on Friday.
Kahnle indicated earlier this week that he should be ready to go following a third rehab appearance Thursday, but evidently the Yankees want him to knock a little more rust off. The reliever hasn't allowed a hit or a run in three rehab innings, striking out two and walking one. Kahnle has been out all season with right biceps tendinitis.

Kahnle (biceps) will make one more rehab appearance Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
Kahnle has made two scoreless appearances so far and, presuming Thursday's outing goes well, figures to be cleared to rejoin the Yankees' bullpen. The right-hander has been out all season with right biceps tendinitis.

Kahnle (biceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Thursday.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Throws another side session
Kahnle (biceps) threw another bullpen session Thursday without issue, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Kahnle might do one more side session before he heads out on a minor-league rehab assignment, per Yankees manager Aaron Boone. The situation can be slow-played because Kahnle is currently on the 60-day IL with right biceps tendinitis and isn't eligible for activation until May 29.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Nearing rehab assignment
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Kahnle (biceps) is close to beginning a rehab assignment, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Kahnle will throw another bullpen session Thursday, which could be the last step before he reports to a minor-league affiliate. He's expected to require 4-to-6 rehab appearances before being activated, setting him up to return in late May or early June if all goes well.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Throws 15-pitch side session
Kahnle (biceps) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session at Target Field on Wednesday, and he'll throw another side session Sunday in Texas, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Kahnle said after his bullpen session Wednesday that he "felt great," but he will now need to see how he responds to the session in the coming days before the Yankees determine his next steps. The 33-year-old has yet to make his season debut after being diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis during spring training. Once healthy, Kahnle should be a middle-innings option out of the bullpen, but he'll likely make multiple rehab appearances before he's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list in late May.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Expects to throw off mound soon
Kahnle (biceps) has been playing catch and expects to throw from a mound within a week, per MLB.com.
Kahnle is dealing with right biceps tendinitis and is on the 60-day IL. The veteran reliever appears to be progressing in his throwing program, however, and moving on to mound work will be a significant step toward a return. Kahnle will likely take his time to ramp up since he isn't eligible to be activated from the injured list until late May.

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Yet to throw off mound
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Kahnle's (biceps) throwing program is "going well," but the pitcher hasn't thrown off a mound yet, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
The team looks to be taking Kahnle's rehab process slowly, as he just began throwing again Thursday and was shifted to the 60-day injured list Saturday. The 33-year-old reliever received a cortisone injection March 21 to address right bicep tendinitis, and he won't be eligible to return until late May.
