Kelly was diagnosed Tuesday with a fractured right forearm, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
Kelly suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in Monday's Cactus League game against the White Sox. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo did not offer an estimated recovery timetable, but this could very well lead to a multi-month absence for the 28-year-old catcher. He had been putting together a nice spring offensively, boasting a .320/.414/.520 slash line through 29 plate appearances in exhibition play. Offseason acquisition Gabriel Moreno would seem to be in line for something close to everyday playing time out of the gate in Arizona. Jose Herrera could back him up.

There's no information right now, but Kelly told Mackie that his level of concern is "not minimal." It's the second catcher injury in a few days after Gabriel Moreno left a Cactus League contest with a hit-by-pitch over the weekend, but this one sounds more serious. Kelly appeared to be hit in the hand area, but nothing has been disclosed at this time. The backstop leaves just a couple days after Gabriel Moreno left for the Diamondbacks after being hit in the knuckles by a pitch. There should be an update on Kelly's status shortly.
Kelly signed a one-year, $4.275 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday to avoid arbitration, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Kelly's numbers took a substantial dip between 2021 and 2022, as the 28-year-old backstop slashed just .211/.282/.334 through 354 plate appearances last season. Kelly's decline, combined with the acquisition of Gabriel Moreno from Toronto, could end up limiting the number of chances he gets at the plate in 2023.
Kelly went 1-for-4 with a double, a run and a walk during Sunday's series finale in San Francisco, and he'll head to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Cooper Hummel is starting behind the dish and batting eighth.

Kelly's first RBI came in the second inning when he walked with the bases loaded. He came around to score later on another bases-loaded walk. Kelly also knocked in Daulton Varsho and Christian Walker on a ninth-inning single. The catcher had gone hitless in his last 13 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .214, but it now sits at .216 after Saturday's game.
