  • Angels' Amir Garrett: Gets minors deal from Angels

The Angels signed Garrett to a minor-league contract Wednesday. Garrett was cut loose by the Giants late in spring training after it was clear he wasn't going to make the big-league roster, but he's managed to quickly catch on with another organization. Garrett has struck out 138 but also walked 81 in 117.1 innings over his last three seasons.

  • Amir Garrett: Let go by Giants

Garrett was released by the Giants on Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Garrett joined the Giants on a minor-league deal as spring training began and was expected to make the bullpen. However, he struggled throughout Cactus League action, allowing nine earned runs across 6.1 innings while maintaining just a 3:7 K:BB. Garrett pitched effectively with the Royals in 2023, so he may get a shot with another team.

  • Giants' Amir Garrett: Receives NRI from San Francisco

Garrett signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Murray says Garrett will receive a $1.35 million salary if he's in the big leagues. The left-handed reliever holds a 5.06 ERA with 81 walks over 117.1 innings since the beginning of the 2021 season. He also has 138 strikeouts across that span, though, and is still just 31, so he seems worthy of a dice roll on a non-guaranteed deal.

  • Amir Garrett: Granted release

Garrett was granted his release from the Guardians on Thursday. Garrett signed a minor-league deal with Cleveland in late July and will now once again enter the open market. The 31-year-old lefty surrendered three runs over 4.2 innings with Triple-A Columbus and should be able to secure another minor-league deal elsewhere.

  • Guardians' Amir Garrett: Gets minors deal from Cleveland

Garrett signed a minor-league contract with the Guardians on Monday. Garrett was cut loose by the Royals earlier this month but will remain in the American League Central. The veteran left-hander has posted a 3.33 ERA but also an ugly 1.73 WHIP with 20 walks over 24.1 innings this season at the big-league level. He'll attempt to get back on track in the minors and earn another shot in Cleveland.

  • Amir Garrett: Becomes free agent

Garrett was released by the Royals on Saturday. No team wanted to claim Garrett and his $2.65 million salary off waivers, but he'll now be free to seek out a minor-league or minimum-salary contract. His 3.33 ERA in 24.1 innings this season looks strong, but his 5.58 FIP and 5.05 SIERA tell a different story. His control has never been a strong point, but his walk rate rose to an untenable 17.9 percent this season.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Cast off 40-man roster

The Royals designated Garrett for assignment Sunday. Garrett will surrender his spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster to left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (head), who was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday in Cleveland. Though Garrett posted a respectable 3.33 ERA over his 24.1 innings out of the Kansas City bullpen this season, most of his other ratios (1.73 WHIP, career-worst 7.1 K-BB%, 85.2 percent strand rate) suggested he was due for a correction in terms of run prevention. Garrett will now be exposed to waivers, though it's unclear if any of MLB's other 29 teams will be willing to put in a claim for a veteran reliever who has struggled in recent seasons and is on a $2.65 million salary for 2023.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Takes loss Thursday

Garrett (0-1) took the loss Thursday versus the Guardians, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out one in one-third of an inning. He gave up solo home runs to Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor on consecutive pitches and ran into more trouble after that, before Collin Snider also allowed one of the runners he inherited from Garrett to score. The southpaw had pitched three consecutive scoreless innings since coming back from a month-long absence with an elbow injury. Garrett has a decent 3.33 ERA, but his 1.73 WHIP and 28:20 K:BB through 24.1 innings suggest he could be in for more poor performances if he can't trim his walk rate. His 7.4 BB/9 is the worst mark of his career.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Back from IL

The Royals reinstated Garrett (elbow) from the injured list Friday. Garrett put up a 3.00 ERA and 1.76 WHIP through 21 innings before landing on the injured list in early June. Now that he's healthy again, he could be used more often in high-leverage situations after the Royals traded Aroldis Chapman to Texas on Friday -- assuming Garrett isn't dealt himself before reaching free agency in the offseason.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Begins assignment Thursday

Garrett (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. Garrett was given a timeline of 4-to-6 weeks after landing on the injured list June 2 with an elbow injury, and he appears to be trending toward the shorter end of that range. The 30-year-old lefty will presumably make a couple appearances in the minors before returning to the Royals' bullpen.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Throws off mound

Garrett (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Monday marks the first time Garrett has thrown since an elbow injury forced him onto the 15-day injured list June 2. The 31-year-old lefty is scheduled to face hitters in a live batting practice Thursday, but it will be another few weeks before he returns to the Royals' bullpen.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Placed on 15-day IL

Garrett was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 29, with left elbow valgus extension overload. It's unclear exactly what that diagnosis entails as far as a recovery timeline goes. Garrett has struggled with his command this year, issuing 17 walks through 21 innings, but he's still managed to produce a respectable 3.00 ERA. Jackson Kowar will fill the vacant spot in the Kansas City bullpen.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Goes on family emergency list

The Royals placed Garrett on the family medical emergency list Wednesday. Garrett can be on the list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days. Kansas City called up Mike Mayers from Triple-A Omaha to replace him on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Second outing since illness

Garrett allowed a hit and two walks and struck out two in a scoreless inning during Friday's 5-1 loss to the Brewers. Garrett exited Monday's game versus the White Sox after getting sick on the mound. He returned Wednesday and has now strung together 2.1 scoreless innings over his last three appearances. For the season, he owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB over 16.2 innings. He has yet to record a result, a save or a hold, which indicates Garrett is not in the high-leverage conversation in a bullpen where closing opportunities are already limited.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Strong in spring

Garrett has allowed just one walk and struck out four over four hitless innings this spring. Garrett had a hideous 6.4 BB/9 last season, so seeing him display more control, even in Cactus League play, is encouraging. He's only a couple of years removed from being a potential closer with the Reds, but his 4.96 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 45.1 innings last year meant he mainly worked as a middle reliever. With Scott Barlow and Aroldis Chapman on the roster, Garrett's chances of closing early in the year are slim, but strong pitching could earn him ninth-inning looks as the season progresses.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Avoids arbitration with K.C.

Garrett signed a one-year, $2.65 million contract with the Royals on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Postt reports. Garrett's first season in Kansas City didn't go all that well, as he posted a 4.96 ERA and 49:32 K:BB over 45.1 innings. He did hold lefties to a .390 OPS, though, so new manager Matt Quatraro will have to be careful when he uses the southpaw in 2023.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Picks up hold in Sunday's win

Garrett retired both of the batters he faced, one via strikeout, to earn his eighth hold of the season in Sunday's 15-7 win over the Padres. Garrett was making his second appearance for the Royals since he completed his two-game suspension and was added back to the active roster Friday. He had a rough go out of the bullpen in Friday's 13-5 loss -- he served up four earned runs on five hits while recording just one out -- but he bounced back nicely in the series finale. For the season, Garrett owns a 4.95 ERA over 36.1 innings.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Collects third win

Garrett (3-1) struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the win Monday over the White Sox. Garrett's strong August continued in the eighth inning Monday, as he kept runs off the board for the ninth time in 10 appearances this month. The southpaw hasn't allowed an earned run since the All-Star break, giving up just one unearned run in his last 13 innings. He's posted a 10:7 K:BB in that span while adding two wins and three holds. For the season, the reliever has a 4.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 36:26 K:BB with seven holds through 35.1 innings. Garrett continues to pitch in a mid-leverage role, though he's unlikely to get many save chances since Scott Barlow has succeeded as the closer for much of the year.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Picks up second win

Garrett (2-1) allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the win Monday over the Angels. Starter Zack Greinke pitched five shutout innings, but the Royals didn't get on the board until the bottom of the sixth. This put Garrett in line for his first win since April 19. Through seven outings in July, Garrett owns a 5.40 ERA and 6:4 K:BB. That's not too far off from his season performance, which has seen him record a 5.92 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 27:19 K:BB in 24.1 innings. He's added four holds, but he's not currently a part of the Royals' high-leverage mix.

  • Royals' Amir Garrett: Solid versus Rangers

Garrett struck out one and walked one in 1.1 scoreless innings during Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Rangers. Garrett got the last out of the fourth inning and stayed in for the fifth after an ineffective start from Jonathan Heasley. In seven outings in June, Garrett has allowed six runs in 4.2 innings, though he's given up multiple runs in two of those appearances while generating scoreless efforts in another four. The southpaw is still struggling with consistency nearly halfway through the season, posting a 6.38 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB across 18.1 innings. Walks have long been a problem for Garrett, but he's posted a particularly poor 7.4 BB/9 this year; that's not only the worst mark of his career, but it's also largely nullified the benefits of a .238 BABIP.
