Cody Anderson: Released by Mariners
Anderson (elbow) was released by the Mariners in March, Baseball America reports.
He underwent flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow in June of 2019 and had Tommy John surgery in 2017, so it seems arm injuries may have put an end to Anderson's big-league career. The 29-year-old righty only ever pitched in games as a member of the Indians organization.

Mariners' Cody Anderson: Inks minors deal with Mariners
Anderson (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Saturday as a non-roster invitee, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Anderson's 2019 season was cut short after he underwent surgery on his flexor tendon in his right elbow in mid-June, but he'll get to work in major-league spring training in 2020 pending a physical. The right-hander has seen limited action over the past several seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017.

Anderson was sent to the 7-day injured list at the beginning of June with right elbow inflammation, but evidently the issue was much worse than initially thought. A timetable for his return has yet to emerge, but he'll likely miss the remainder of the season while on the mend.

Anderson was placed on the minor-league injured list Tuesday due to right elbow inflammation, Tribeinsider reports.
Since being demoted to Triple-A Columbus on May 11, Anderson has posted a 6.11 ERA and 1.70 WHIP with 13 punchouts over 17.2 innings. It remains to be seen whether he'll need more than the 7-day minimum to fully recover.

Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Anderson was up for two starts in his latest stint with the Indians, giving up six runs in a combined 3.2 innings of work. A.J. Cole will take his place on the roster but presumably not in the rotation, as an off day Wednesday means that the Indians won't need a fifth starter for 10 days.

Indians' Cody Anderson: Early exit in no-decision
Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the A's, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks over three innings while striking out three.
The right-hander also hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch, and Anderson needed 68 pitches (45 strikes) to record the nine outs. Cleveland doesn't have any better options to fill a rotation spot right now, so the 28-year-old will continue to get stretched out and take a 9.35 ERA into his next scheduled start Thursday, at home against the O's.

Indians' Cody Anderson: Gives up grand slam in loss
Anderson (0-1) allowed four runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning during a loss to the Mariners on Sunday.
This was Anderson's first MLB appearance since April 21 -- the Indians recalled him from Triple-A ahead of this outing -- and first start of the year. It was one to forget, though, as Anderson gave up a grand slam and wasn't able to complete an inning. Considering he's only had four appearances this season, this outing ballooned his numbers. Anderson is 0-1 with a 11.12 ERA, 2.47 WHIP and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings this year.

Indians' Cody Anderson: Recalled for start
The Indians recalled Anderson from Triple-A Columbus ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the Mariners.
Sunday's appearance will mark Anderson's first at the big-league level since September 2016 after elbow injuries derailed his career. Though he entered spring training healthy, Anderson was eased into action at the minor-league level and made only two three-inning appearances for Columbus prior to his promotion. He'll assume the rotation spot vacated by Corey Kluber (forearm) but will presumably be on a strict pitch count in his first outing with the Tribe.

Indians' Cody Anderson: Set to start Sunday
Anderson will be called up from Triple-A Columbus to start Sunday against the Mariners, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Cleveland's starting rotation took another blow this week with Corey Kluber heading to the injured list with a fractured forearm, opening up a spot for Anderson in the rotation. Kluber is likely to be sidelined through the rest of the month at least, and the Indians have only one remaining off day in May, so Anderson and Jefry Rodriguez appear primed to slot in as regular starters for the near future. Anderson will need to be eased into action early on to get fully stretched out after throwing out of the bullpen for the Indians in April.

The Indians optioned Anderson to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday.
Anderson will head back to the minors to clear a spot for Jefry Rodriguez, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Marlins. During his week-and-a-half-long stay with the big club, Anderson made three appearances in relief and gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings.

Anderson's demotion leaves the Indians with 44 players left at their big-league camp. The right-hander has mostly worked as a starter since beginning his professional career in 2011, but the Tribe's stacked major-league rotation limited Anderson to competing for a bullpen role during training camp. He could have a spot reserved for him in the Triple-A rotation and may rank as one of the Indians' top options when a spot starter is needed in 2019.

Anderson underwent Tommy John surgery in March of 2017 and has been slowly progressing throughout this season. Manager Terry Francona said, "In the not too distant future, he'll be thinking about some rehab games. Maybe in the next couple of weeks." The 27-year-old should require multiple rehab appearances and is likely looking at return to the Indians in mid-September as a best-case scenario.
