  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Makes spring debut

Mantiply allowed one hit and hit two batters over a scoreless inning in Friday's spring game against Cincinnati. Mantiply loaded the bases with one out but wriggled out of the jam by inducing a 5-2-3 double play. That he faced adversity and pitched out it is the positive spin on the left-hander's first Cactus League appearance. He's expected to occupy a spot in the bullpen to open the season, but the one-time high-leverage option needs better results to reclaim a trusted role in 2024. Mantiply recorded a 4.62 ERA with a diminished strikeout rate and increased walk rate in 2023.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Avoids arbitration with Arizona

Mantiply signed a one-year, $935,000 contract with the Diamondbacks on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Mantiply lost his role as a high-leverage option out of the Arizona bullpen in 2023, as he posted a 4.62 ERA across 39 frames in the majors. He saw a significant dip in strikeouts and his lack of velocity could continue to lead to inconsistent results.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: To open Game 4

Mantiply will work as the opener for Game 4 of the World Series against the Rangers on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Mantiply last pitched during Game 1, striking out one batter over a scoreless inning of relief work. He figures to work the first inning or so before handing the ball to a primary pitcher. The Diamondbacks have yet to reveal any pitching plans past Mantiply, but Ryne Nelson would figure to be one of the top candidates to get outs, as he's yet to take the mound this series.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Starting bullpen game

Mantiply will start Game 4 of the NLCS against the Phillies on Friday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Mantiply has made four appearances during Arizona's postseason run, but he was roughed up in Game 2 against the Phillies, when he allowed three earned runs while recording just one out. He's likely to pitch only one inning, with Ryne Nelson a strong candidate to cover bulk innings after him.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Opening Sunday

Mantiply will start Sunday's game against the Cubs, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The 32-year-old will make his third start of the season as the Diamondbacks decided to go with an opener ahead of expected primary pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, who was originally scheduled to start the contest. Mantiply has covered as much as three frames in an appearance this season, but he's likely to pitch only an inning or two Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Serving as opener Monday

Mantiply is scheduled to work as the Diamondbacks' opening pitcher for Monday's game against the Rangers, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. Mantiply hasn't tossed more than three innings in any of his 31 appearances in the majors or minors this season and hasn't exceeded two innings in more than two months, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the Texas batting order before exiting the contest. Slade Cecconi, who had initially been listed as Arizona's scheduled starter for Monday, will most likely work in bulk relief behind Mantiply.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Opening Tuesday's contest

Mantiply will serve as the Diamondbacks' opening pitcher for Tuesday's game in Colorado, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. After taking the loss in relief in Monday's series opener at Coors Field while failing to retire any of the three batters he faced en route to allowing three earned runs, Mantiply will get back on the hill Tuesday and attempt to right the ship. He tossed only 11 pitches Monday, so Mantiply should be able to give Arizona an inning or two before turning the game over to the bullpen. Arizona hasn't named a designated bulk reliever for the day, but manager Torey Lovullo could lean heavily on either Slade Cecconi or Bryce Jarvis, both of whom have started in the minors for most of the season and are available on three days' rest.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Recalled from Reno

The Diamondbacks recalled Mantiply from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Mantiply has taken a major step back this season, accumulating a 5.74 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 15.2 innings in the majors this season (2.85 ERA in 2022). He hasn't fared well in Triple-A either, but he'll still be called upon to provide Arizona's bullpen with a fresh arm. Peter Strzelecki, who was acquired in a trade with the Brewers on Tuesday, was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Sent down to Triple-A

Mantiply was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Friday. Mantiply was up for a few days while Andrew Chafin was on paternity leave but now heads back to Reno with Chafin back in the fold. The 2022 All-Star has had a tougher time in 2023 with a 5.74 ERA in 13 appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Recalled from Reno

Arizona recalled Mantiply from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. Mantiply was optioned to Reno at the end of June and had allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- in 6.2 innings of relief since that demotion. The 32-year-old left-hander figures to operate in a low-leverage bullpen role in his return to the major-league level.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Mantiply to Triple-A Reno on Monday. The 2022 All-Star's move to the minors comes after he surrendered eight earned runs over eight innings across his five relief appearances since Arizona reinstated him from the 15-day injured list June 12. The Diamondbacks haven't announced a corresponding roster move for Mantiply, who could be back in the Arizona bullpen after stringing together a few quality appearances at Triple-A.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Comes back from IL

The Diamondbacks reinstated Mantiply (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Monday. The 2022 All-Star will rejoin the Arizona bullpen after he had been on the shelf for just over a month with a right hamstring strain. Maniply received the green light to return from the IL after making a pair of minor-league rehab appearances last week.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Will throw Saturday

Mantiply (hamstring) will throw off flat ground Saturday, the Arizona Republic reports. This will mark Mantiply's first activity since being placed on the injured list May 9 with a strained right hamstring.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Placed on 15-day IL

Arizona placed Mantiply on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 9, with a right hamstring strain. Anthony Misiewicz has been called up from Triple-A Reno to handle a lefty relief role. The 32-year-old Mantiply was sporting a sharp 2.35 ERA with eight strikeouts and zero walks through 7.2 innings this season. He's expected to be out 3-4 weeks.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Makes season debut

Mantiply allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over 1.1 innings in Tuesday's 8-7 win over the Cardinals. Mantiply was activated off the injured list earlier in the day and made his season debut in what was low-leverage spot -- the Diamondbacks were leading, 7-3, at the time. The lefty later gave up a home run to Willson Contreras. Mantiply has been very good at keeping balls in the park since joining Arizona, giving up just seven homers over 102 innings (0.7 HR/9) entering the 2023 season. He was an All Star in 2022 and is expected to be part of the trusted, high-leverage relief crew.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Might have short rehab assignment

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Mantiply (shoulder) might only need one rehab appearance, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Mantiply is scheduled to make his first rehab appearance Wednesday with Double-A Amarillo, and it sounds like it could also be his last. The 32-year-old reliever began the 2023 season on the 15-day injured list after battling left shoulder fatigue toward the end of spring training, but he's been throwing without issue for a couple of weeks.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Faces live batters

Mantiply (shoulder) threw to live batters Friday at Salt River Fields, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. Mantiply faced batters for the first time after hurling two bullpen sessions this week. The lefty threw 20 pitches and awaits the next step, which could be a rehab assignment.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Goes on IL

The Diamondbacks placed Mantiply on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation prior to Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Dodgers. Assuming Mantiply's shoulder issue is in fact nothing more significant than inflammation, he could be in store for a minimum-length stay on the shelf, or close to it. Since his placement on the IL is retroactive to March 27, he'll first be eligible for activation April 11.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Works scoreless frame

Mantiply allowed one run and struck out one over a scoreless eighth inning in Friday's spring game against the Mariners. Mantiply hasn't allowed a run over two Cactus League outings. With Arizona's closer situation described as "fluid" by manager Torey Lovullo, Mantiply is part of crew that could get late-inning work. Mark Melancon is likely the frontrunner, but he was roughed up in his spring debut, which focuses speculation about Mantiply, Kevin Ginkel and Andrew Chafin. Mantiply had a strong season in 2022, sporting a 2.85 ERA and 22 holds; however, he blew six of eight save opportunities, as Lovullo auditioned several arms when Melancon lost control of the job.

  • Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Collapses in ninth

Mantiply suffered a blown save after he pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in Monday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Brewers. Mantiply was called upon to protect a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he quickly ran into trouble. The left-hander surrendered a solo home run to Hunter Renfroe to open the frame before Christian Yelich and Kolten Wong came around to score on an error with two outs in the inning. The reliever was removed from the contest with two outs in the ninth and the score knotted up at 4-4, resulting in his sixth blown save of the campaign. Mantiply has now gone 2-for-8 on save opportunities this year while posting a 2.85 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 61 strikeouts over 60 innings in 69 appearances in 2022.
