  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Back to bench Wednesday

Dixon is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Dixon will retreat to the bench after he had manned first base in three of the Padres' last four games, with all of his starts coming against left-handed pitching. The 31-year-old looks like he could handle a short-side platoon role for the Padres while Manny Machado (hand) is on the 10-day injured list.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Swats first homer since 2019

Dixon went 1-for-2 with a solo home run Tuesday in a 7-4 win over Washington.

Dixon got the start at first base and swatted a 403-foot solo homer to center field in the fourth inning. It was his first long ball in eight games this season and his first major-league home run since he played with Detroit in 2019. Dixon went deep 15 times that year but spent most of the following two seasons in Japan before logging most of his time last year in San Diego's minor-league system. He's smacked 30 homers over his last 76 contests between Double-A and Triple A across two seasons, but his playing time in the majors has been limited and doesn't figure to increase significantly given the Padres' loaded roster.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Recalled from El Paso

San Diego recalled Dixon from Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Dixon is hitting seventh and playing first base against the Red Sox on Friday. The veteran infielder/outfielder has been up and down with the club for the majority of the 2023 campaign, and it appears he'll be taking the place of Manny Machado (hand) on the roster.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Returns to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Dixon to Triple-A El Paso on Monday.

Dixon was up with the Padres for the weekend as the big club's 27th man for its two-game series with the Giants in Mexico City. He didn't appear in either contest and should now settle back into a near-everyday role with El Paso during Pacific Coast League play.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Up as 27th man

Dixon was recalled Saturday to serve as the 27th man for the two-game series in Mexico City against the Giants.

Dixon, who can play all four corner spots, will be up as a depth option for these two games at altitude in Mexico. The 31-year-old is slashing .364/.463/.773 with five home runs and three steals in 12 games in the Pacific Coast League.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Optioned to Triple-A

Dixon was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

With Fernando Tatis returning from suspension Thursday, Dixon has now been optioned twice in the last four days. The 31-year-old utility man is slashing .300/.464/.600 in 28 minor-league plate appearances, and he could bounce around between levels throughout the season.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Recalled from El Paso

Dixon was recalled from Triple-A El Paso by the Padres on Monday.

Dixon is recalled just a day after being sent down to Triple-A El Paso to replace Luis Campusano after Campusano was placed on the injured list with a thumb sprain. Dixon is starting in right against Atlanta on Monday, but his stay in the majors could be short with Fernando Tatis coming off the suspended list Thursday.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Sent to Triple-A

Dixon was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was called up by San Diego last weekend and went 1-for-10 with a run and eight strikeouts in four games. Catcher Brett Sullivan was promoted in a corresponding move, as Luis Campusano (thumb) is banged up.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Starting in right field Tuesday

Dixon is starting in right field and batting ninth Tuesday against the Mets.

Dixon was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday and will make his first major-league appearance of the season Tuesday versus the Mets and left-handed starter David Peterson. The 31-year-old is a versatile defender but carries a rough .228/.269/.407 career big-league batting line.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Gets call to majors

The Padres recalled Dixon from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

He'll join the big-league roster as a replacement for outfielder David Dahl, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right quadriceps strain. Like Dahl, Dixon is capable of playing the corner outfield, but the 31-year-old also has prior experience at three infield spots (first base, third base and second base).

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Optioned to Triple-A

Dixon was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

Dixon's contract was selected by the Padres late in the 2022 campaign, but he'll begin this season in the minors. He slashed .371/.447/.866 with 13 homers, 32 RBI, 24 runs and three stolen bases over 25 games at the Triple-A level last year, and he'll be a candidate to be called up if the Padres need additional depth at some point this year.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Scratched due to illness

Dixon has been scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Reds due to an illness.

He was scheduled to start at third base and hit sixth, but the Padres will now turn to Matthew Batten to man the hot corner. Dixon should be considered day-to-day moving forward.

  • Padres' Brandon Dixon: Contract selected by San Diego

Dixon had his contract selected by the Padres on Tuesday.

Dixon joined the Friars on a minor-league deal in March and will join the big-league club with nine games left in the regular season. The 30-year-old had a 1.313 OPS with 13 home runs in 25 games for Triple-A El Paso and is looking to see big-league action for the first time since 2020 with Detroit.

  • Brandon Dixon: Bound for Japan

Dixon was released by the Tigers on Thursday in order for him to head to Japan.

The Tigers did not announce which NPB club Dixon will be signing with. Dixon fits the typical profile of a player heading overseas, as he's a 28-year-old with a respectable 197 big-league games under his belt but a generally unimpressive showing in those games. He's hit 20 career homers at the highest level and owns a .228/.271/.410 slash line.

  • Tigers' Brandon Dixon: Contract selected

Dixon's contract was selected Tuesday from the Tigers' alternate training site.

He logged a .248/.290/.435 slash line with 15 home runs and five steals in 118 games with the Tigers last year but then lost his 40-man roster spot and had been working out this summer at the alternate site. Jonathan Schoop (wrist) was transferred to the 45-day injured list in a corresponding move. Dixon should serve as a bench infielder for the rest of the week.

  • Tigers' Brandon Dixon: Loses out on roster spot

The Tigers reassigned Dixon to their alternate training site in Toledo on Thursday.

Though he led the Tigers with 15 home runs in 2019, Dixon was still a below-league-average hitter (86 wRC+) and didn't provide much value in the field. The Tigers non-tendered him over the winter before bringing him back on a minor-league deal, but he was unable to win a utility job with the club coming out of summer camp.

  • Tigers' Brandon Dixon: Added to 60-man pool

Dixon will be a part of the Tigers' 60-man player pool this season.

Dixon was not a member of the 40-man roster, but after slugging a team-high 15 home runs last season, it appeared likely that he'd earn a spot on the expanded roster. The 28-year-old will give the Tigers a veteran option off their bench.

  • Tigers' Brandon Dixon: Could earn bench role

Dixon could earn a reserve role if MLB rosters are expanded for the 2020 campaign, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Dixon cleared waivers in January and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo, which seemed to be his likely starting location in 2020. However, MLB rosters could expand when the regular season is able to begin, and Dixon could end up as a backup option at first, third and both corner outfield spots. The 28-year-old slashed .248/.290/.435 and led the Tigers with 15 home runs in 2019.

  • Tigers' Brandon Dixon: Remains in organization

Dixon cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.

Dixon will remain as organizational depth for the Tigers heading into his age-28 season. His .248/.290/.435 slash line in 118 games last season was acceptable for a bench player who spent time at six different positions but clearly wasn't good enough for any team to view him as a desirable addition.

  • Tigers' Brandon Dixon: Removed from 40-man roster

Dixon was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Saturday.

The Tigers acquired C.J. Cron (thumb) and Jonathan Schoop on Saturday, and Dixon was removed from the 40-man roster in order to make room for the infielders. Dixon led the Tigers with 15 home runs in 2019, but he saw limited playing time despite his defensive versatility. It wouldn't be surprising if the 27-year-old was able to find another major-league opportunity elsewhere, but it's unclear whether he would be able to cement himself as an everyday player despite his ability to move around defensively.
