  • Royals' Dan Altavilla: Gets NRI from Kansas City

Altavilla signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The 31-year-old has missed most of the last two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he is healthy now. According to Heyman, Altavilla was touching 98 mph while pitching in the Dominican Winter League.

  • Dan Altavilla: Cut by Boston

The Red Sox released Altavilla on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Altavilla has spent all season working his way back from an undisclosed injury, and he made his way up to High-A ball, allowing three runs in seven innings with Greenville during his assignment. He'll now hit the open market and look to latch on with another franchise as organizational depth. Altavilla hasn't pitched in the majors since 2021.

  • Red Sox's Dan Altavilla: Re-assigned to MiLB camp

Altavilla was re-assigned to minor league camp Sunday. Altavilla was always unlikely to make the Opening Day roster as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-handed reliever does have a chance to help the Boston bullpen before 2023 comes to a close.

  • Red Sox's Dan Altavilla: Returns to health

Altavilla (elbow) is healthy heading into spring training, Beyond the Monster reports. Altavilla was spotted throwing off a mound earlier in the month after missing the entire 2022 campaign while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Now that the right-hander is back at full strength, he'll set his sights on earning a spot in Boston's bullpen. Altavilla last pitched in two games for the Padres in 2021, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one across 1.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Dan Altavilla: Gets commitment from BoSox

Altavailla (elbow) agreed Wednesday with the Red Sox on a two-year, minor-league contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Altavilla is still in the early stages of his rehab from the Tommy John surgery he underwent June 29, 2021, so his deal with the Red Sox will allow him to continue his recovery program under the observation of the organization's medical staff for the first year. The right-hander could be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment in August or September, but he likely won't be a realistic candidate to factor into the Red Sox's plans at the big-league level until next spring.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Padres outrighted Altavilla (elbow) to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Shaun O'Neill of MLB.com reports. Altavilla spent most of the season on the 60-day injured list and underwent Tommy John surgery in June, so it's not a major surprise the Friars won't keep him on the 40-man roster through the offseason. The 29-year-old will miss most, if not all, of the 2022 campaign, but there's a chance he'll be able to return during the second half if his rehab goes smoothly.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Altavilla (elbow) announced via his personal Twitter account Tuesday that he recently underwent successful Tommy John surgery. The veteran right-hander has been on the injured list since mid-April with elbow inflammation, and he'll now face an extensive recovery process. Altavilla will miss the rest of the season and will remain sidelined for the first half of 2022, at minimum.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Transferred to 60-day IL

Altavilla (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. Altavilla has been out since mid April due to right elbow inflammation, and he isn't particularly close to beginning a rehab stint. As a result, the right-hander will be moved to the 60-day IL to make room for catcher Webster Rivas, whose contract was selected as part of a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Remains far from return

Altavilla (elbow) isn't close to beginning a rehab stint, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. The left-hander has been out since mid April with right elbow inflammation. He tossed 1.1 innings this season before going down, allowing one hit -- a home run -- while striking out two. Altavilla does not have a clear return timeframe.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Reinstated from IL

Altavilla (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. He takes the place in the bullpen of Taylor Williams (knee), who was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move. Altavilla should primarily pitch in low-to-mid leverage situations.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Sidelined with calf injury

Padres manager Jayce Tingler said Monday that Altavilla will open the season on the 10-day injured list with a calf issue, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The injury likely explains why Altavilla hasn't made a Cactus League appearance over the past week. Tingler suggested the calf issue isn't a major concern for Altavilla, who should be in store for a brief stint on the IL to begin the season.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Struggling with long ball

Altavilla has yielded four home runs across six Cactus League innings, and opposing hitters are batting .307 against him overall. Altavilla entered spring on the roster bubble and hasn't helped his case with the number of home runs he has served up. He is out of options and the Padres are dealing with a number of injuries in their bullpen, giving the right-hander a better chance of sticking around. Still, the team could elect to pass him over in favor of a promising young arm.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Reaches deal with Padres

Altavilla and the Padres reached a one-year, $850,000 deal Friday. Altavilla and San Diego won't require an arbiter during the offseason after agreeing to a one-year contract Friday. The right-hander was included on the team's NLDS roster in 2020 after he was acquired by the Padres at the trade deadline. He should take on a middle-relief role in 2021 after posting a 5.75 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 20.1 innings with the Mariners and Padres during the shortened 2020 campaign.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Joins NLDS roster

Altavilla was added to the Padres' 28-man roster for the NLDS on Wednesday. The 28-year-old appeared in nine games after being acquired by the Padres at the trade deadline and allowed three runs on six hits with a 10:5 K:BB over 8.2 innings. Altavilla could very well see the mound despite just being added to the playoff roster, as it's all hands on deck for the Padres' bullpen with top-two starters Dinelson Lamet (biceps) and Mike Clevinger (elbow) sidelined.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Charged with loss versus old team

Altavilla (1-3) took the loss Saturday, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks while striking out three over 1.1 innings versus the Mariners on Saturday. Altavilla was responsible for a two-run double by Luis Torrens in the third inning, and the Padres were unable to get the reliever off the hook. The 28-year-old Altavilla began his Padres career with three straight scoreless outings, but he's now allowed three runs over his last two appearances. In 18 appearances between the Padres and the Mariners, the righty has a 7.02 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.

  • Padres' Dan Altavilla: Joining Padres

Altavilla was traded from the Mariners to the Padres on Sunday in a trade involving several players, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Altavilla has been inconsistent out of the Mariners' bullpen to begin the season, but he'll join San Diego's strong bullpen as part of Sunday's blockbuster deal. The right-hander has made 13 appearances in Seattle this season, posting a 7.71 ERA and 14:7 K:BB over 11.2 innings while recording one save. He likely won't pitch in as many higher-leverage situations with the Padres given the team's depth in the back end of the bullpen.

  • Mariners' Dan Altavilla: Takes second loss

Altavilla (1-2) was charged with the loss in a defeat at the hands of the Dodgers on Tuesday, allowing an earned run on one hit and two walks over one inning. He also recorded two strikeouts. The right-hander came on in the eighth and was charged with preserving a 1-1 tie, but Altavilla saw matters unravel after recording two outs against the first three hitters he faced. Corey Seager's RBI single to right that plated Austin Barnes ultimately proved to be the deciding run in the contest and made Altavilla the pitcher of record. Factoring in Tuesday's stumble, Altavilla has allowed at least one run in four of nine appearances this season, although the gap between his 7.27 ERA and 4.41 FIP and his 25.0 percent strikeout rate suggests he has the potential to hit his stride at some point.

  • Mariners' Dan Altavilla: Unravels in Sunday's win

Altavilla allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning in a win over the Rockies on Sunday. He struck out one. Altavilla's outing started out harmlessly enough when he retired the first two batters he faced, but he ultimately surrendered a two-run single to Matt Kemp after putting Garrett Hampson, Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon on. Altavilla was subsequently charged with an additional run after exiting for his second three-run outing over the last four appearances. Those are Altavilla's only hiccups thus far this season across six trips to the mound, but they've been enough to push his ERA to a bloated 9.53 across 5.2 innings.

  • Mariners' Dan Altavilla: Serious late-inning option

Altavilla (1-1), who took the loss in a 3-2 defeat in extra innings at the hands of the Athletics on Saturday, is nevertheless a pitcher manager Scott Servais plans to rely on frequently during the late innings, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "He'll continue to get the ball late in games," Servais said. "Some days, it might be the ninth inning, other days, it might be the eighth, depending where we're at in their lineup and what matchup is best for him and for us." Altavilla's stumble Saturday came even as he was exceedingly sharp, as he threw 11 of his 15 pitches for strikes. However, he allowed a ground-rule double to the pinch-hitting Robbie Grossman, which scored Tony Kemp from second in the 10th inning with what turned out to be the winning run. Altavilla's high-90s fastball and a slider he consistently hits 90-92 mph with is what makes him a good fit for high-leverage opportunities, and with Yoshihisa Hirano (illness) still working his way back into shape and Austin Adams (knee) not yet available either, the hard-throwing right-hander should continue seeing some late-inning work for the time being.

  • Mariners' Dan Altavilla: Notches first save

Altavilla recorded his first save in a win over the Angels on Wednesday, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout over a scoreless ninth inning. Manager Scott Servais had talked about Altavilla as a candidate for ninth-inning work during summer camp, and Wednesday, the hard-throwing right-hander proved to be up to the task. Altavilla was relatively sharp while getting nine of 15 pitches into the strike zone and wiggling out of potential trouble by retiring Anthony Rendon and Shohei Ohtani after surrendering a one-out double to Mike Trout. Altavilla's already-impressive velocity is notably up through his first two appearances, as he's averaging 97.8 mph on his fastball, an uptick from last season's 96.6 mph. With projected closer Yoshihisa Hirano (illness) still in the process of building his arm back up in Arizona, Altavilla may be in line for more save chances in the short term.
