Bracho, who was attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee, owns a lifetime 4.88 ERA and 15.7 K-BB% across 95 relief appearances in the majors over parts of six seasons with Arizona and Atlanta. The 30-year-old will likely need to make a positive impression at Triple-A Louisville to begin the season before Cincinnati entertains adding him to its MLB bullpen.
Bracho agreed to a minor-league contract with the Reds on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training.
Bracho was let go by Atlanta in November and will now have a chance to secure a roster spot in Cincinnati. The 30-year-old appeared in three big-league games in 2022 and spent most of the campaign at the Triple-A level, where he had a 2.67 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 70:10 K:BB across 57.1 innings.
Bracho was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Tuesday.
Tuesday is the deadline to add prospects to the 40-man roster as protection from the Rule 5 draft, and Bracho loses his roster spot to make room for the new additions. The 30-year-old journeyman reliever most recently was put on the 40-man roster late this past season and gave up three earned runs in 2.1 innings over his final and longest appearance with the big club.
Bracho's contract was selected from Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday.
Bracho was traded from Boston to Atlanta in late June, and he's posted a 2.08 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 26 innings over 20 appearances (four starts) at Gwinnett. He had a brief stint in Atlanta's bullpen in early July and will rejoin the active roster ahead of the final week of the regular season.
