  • Padres' Chih-Wei Hu: Agrees to deal with Padres

Hu signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

The right-hander spent all of 2019 in the minors, where he posted a 7.74 ERA with a 45:24 K:BB over 54.2 innings. Despite his struggles, he'll get a chance to bounce back within the Padres' organization. Given Hu's past experience in the majors, he will likely appear in major-league spring training as a non-roster invitee.

  • Indians' Chih-Wei Hu: Outrighted to Triple-A

Hu was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on Monday.

Hu was designated for assignment by Cleveland on Wednesday.

Hu was removed from the 40-man roster to clear a spot for Andrew Velazquez (undisclosed), who was acquired in a trade from Tampa Bay in a corresponding move. Hu owns a very poor 7.95 ERA in 48.2 innings for Triple-A Columbus this season, though his 3.52 ERA in 23 career major-league innings could make him worth a look on waivers.

  • Indians' Chih-Wei Hu: Dealt to Cleveland

Hu was traded to the Indians from the Rays in exchange for infielder Gionti Turner on Monday.

The 25-year-old spent much of the season with the Rays' Triple-A affiliate, producing a 4.66 ERA and a 92:28 K:BB in 102 innings split between 19 starts and five relief appearances. He also has 23 innings of major-league experience under his belt from the past two seasons, allowing nine runs with a 21:7 K:BB in that span. Hu figures to be in the mix for a bullpen spot with his new club, though he does have an option remaining if Cleveland bolsters its bullpen more with veteran arms.

Hu's latest stint with the Rays lasted just two days, with the right-hander making a relief appearance in Tuesday's 4-0 loss. He gave up a run on two hits and struck out four over 2.1 innings in the outing.

Hu was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Monday, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports.

There's a chance Hu will take Snell's place in the rotation for Tuesday's start against the Yankees, but that should be determined in the coming hours. Across two long-relief appearances with the club this year, Hu has logged a 5.87 ERA and 0.78 WHIP in 7.2 innings. He recently allowed five earned runs off eight hits during a four-inning start with Durham last Tuesday.

  • Rays' Chih-Wei Hu: Likely to be called up

Hu was scratched from his scheduled start at Triple-A Durham on Saturday in anticipation of a likely promotion to the Rays on Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Hu is needed at the big-league level in order to help offset the adverse effects of Yonny Chirinos' brief outing Saturday, which caused manager Kevin Cash to alter his short-term rotation plans. The Rays skipper turned to Ryan Yarbrough, who'd been scheduled to start Sunday's game, and the young right-hander ended up working four innings in Saturday's contest. Matt Andriese is now slated to open Sunday's game, and Hu will serve as an extra arm in what is slated to officially be a "bullpen day." The 24-year-old right-hander has made one appearance at the major-league level this season, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk over 2.2 innings against the Rangers on April 16.
