The Red Sox designated Faria for assignment Monday.
Faria didn't have any minor-league options remaining, so Boston had to remove him from the 40-man roster entirely to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Brayan Bello (forearm), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Monday versus the Angels. After getting called up from Worcester on Sunday, Faria went unused out of the bullpen in Boston's 2-1 win over the Angels.

Diamondbacks' Jake Faria: DFA'd Sunday
The Diamondbacks designated Faria for assignment on Sunday.
The righty has allowed multiple runs in two of his last three appearances and now has a 5.51 ERA in 32.2 total innings with Arizona this season. Faria hasn't enjoyed much success since 2017, so he's unlikely to draw a ton of interest on waivers over the next couple days.

Diamondbacks' Jake Faria: Works out of bullpen
Faria scattered two hits and struck out one over a scoreless inning of relief Friday in the Diamondbacks' 5-1 loss to the Cubs.
Faria had posted a 4.85 ERA across 13 innings while starting in his final three appearances before the All-Star break, but he looks like he'll be the odd man out of the rotation with Arizona bringing back Madison Bumgarner and Zac Gallen from the injured list to begin the second half of the season. Expect most of Faria's opportunities out of the bullpen to come in lower-leverage spots.

Faria did not factor into the decision during Thursday's loss to the Rockies. He allowed two runs on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out four across five innings.
It was the longest and strongest outing of the season for Faria, who 55 of 86 pitches for strikes. Despite the improved effort, the Diamondbacks have unfortunately lost all six of their contests with Faria on the mound, rendering a weak security in the rotation for the right-hander. Across six appearances (three starts), Faria has compiled a 4.76 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.

Faria got a no-decision in Saturday's 6-5 loss to San Francisco, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Faria's previous start earned him another turn in the rotation, and while he didn't pitch well Saturday, he did enough to keep the Diamondbacks in the game. Arizona has lost all five of the games in which Faria has made an appearance, though this was his worst outing to date.

Diamondbacks' Jake Faria: Four innings in no-decision
Faria started Monday's 7-1 loss to St. Louis, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in four innings. He didn't factor into the decision.
Making his first start since 2018, Faria gave the D-backs a fighting chance in this one as he only allowed one run and three baserunners in four innings. The bullpen eventually surrendered six runs in the seventh to blow the game, but the solid performance might earn Faria another turn through the rotation.

Diamondbacks' Jake Faria: Getting starting chance
Arizona lists Faria as its probable starting pitcher for Monday's game in St. Louis.
After signing with Arizona on June 19, Faria made his first three appearances for the big club out of the bullpen, giving up three runs (two earned) across four innings. Since he maxed out at 45 pitches across those three outings and most recently pitched an inning of relief Friday, Faria will likely face a limited workload in his first start for the Diamondbacks. He'll be joining the rotation as a replacement for Corbin Martin, who was recently optioned to Triple-A Reno.

Diamondbacks' Jake Faria: Signs big-league deal with Arizona
Faria signed a major-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Faria didn't have to wait long to find a new employer after getting released by the Angels on Wednesday. The 27-year-old righty owns a respectable 4.54 ERA in 170.1 career major-league innings, but that's mainly due to a 3.43 ERA in his rookie year back in 2017. His ERA sits at 5.70 since the start of the 2018 season, but the Diamondbacks appear primed to give him big-league innings nonetheless. Ildemaro Vargas was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Faria signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Sunday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
Faria began the 2020 season at the Brewers' alternate training site before being released by the team in September. He wasn't very effective in Milwaukee after being traded from the Rays, but the right-hander could compete for a spot on the major-league roster at some point in 2021. It's unclear whether he'll serve as a non-roster invitee during spring training.
