  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Lands on injured list

The Blue Jays placed Jansen on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left groin strain. Jansen suffered a groin injury while running to first base Wednesday against Tampa Bay, and he will now officially be forced to sit out until early June. Alejandro Kirk will likely fill in as Toronto's primary catcher while Jansen is on the IL, and Tyler Heineman -- who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday -- figures to be Kirk's backup.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Undergoing MRI

Jansen will undergo an MRI on his injured left groin Thursday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. Jansen injured his groin while running to first base during Wednesday's game against the Rays. The Blue Jays have Tyler Heineman with the club on the taxi squad in case he's needed to replace Jansen on the roster. They do have Daulton Varsho available as an emergency catcher, though, so they could wait it out with Jansen if they feel he'll be available in a day or two.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Not in Thursday's lineup

Jansen (groin) is not in Thursday's lineup versus the Rays, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Jansen exited Wednesday's game due to left groin tightness. Notable is that Tyler Heineman has joined the Blue Jays on the taxi squad, seemingly as protection for Jansen. Alejandro Kirk will catch Alek Manoah on Thursday.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Battling groin tightness

Jansen was pulled from Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay due to left groin tightness. More details on Jansen's injury have now been revealed, but there is still no word surrounding the severity of his groin tightness. If Jansen is forced to miss some time, Alejandro Kirk will likely fill in as Toronto's primary backstop.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Leaves with apparent injury

Jansen was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rays with an apparent injury, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Jansen might have tweaked something while running out a grounder in the top of the fifth inning, as he didn't come back out for defense in the bottom of the frame. The Blue Jays should have more on the catcher's status soon.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Smacks sixth homer

Jansen went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a homer, three RBI and three runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Rays. Jansen extended Toronto's lead to 3-0 with an RBI double off Taj Bradley in the fourth inning before capping a nine-run ninth with a two-run homer off catcher-turned-pitcher Christian Bethancourt. It's Jansen's third homer in his last seven games. The 28-year-old catcher is still slashing just .210/.277/.420 with six home runs and 26 RBI through 130 at-bats while splitting duties behind the plate with Alejandro Kirk.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Walks it off Wednesday

Jansen went 1-for-4 with a walk and a three-run home run in Wednesday's 3-0 extra-inning win over the Yankees. With runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, Jansen yanked a first-pitch slider from Wandy Peralta into the left-field seats to net the win for the Blue Jays. Jansen is starting to find a groove at the plate after a sluggish start to the season, and over his last seven games he's batting .259 (7-for-27) with three doubles, a homer and eight RBI.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Catching Tuesday

Jansen is starting at catcher and batting seventh for the Blue Jays on Tuesday against the Yankees, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. He'll be behind the plate for Kevin Gausman while Alejandro Kirk grabs some pine. Jansen has now started three of the last four contests.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Hits bench Monday

Jansen is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Jansen had started behind the dish in three of the past four games, but he'll cede catching duties to Alejandro Kirk as the Blue Jays open a four-game slate with the Yankees on Monday. Though Kirk earned an All-Star nod in 2022 largely on the basis of his production with the bat, his modest .679 OPS so far this season has resulted in him losing out on some starts to Jansen. While Jansen remains less productive at the plate (.182/.258/.330 slash line in 97 plate appearances), the upgrade he offers on the defensive end should guarantee him at least a part-time role until Kirk starts tapping into more power.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Resting Saturday

Jansen will be on the bench Saturday against the Pirates. Jansen has fallen into a slump at the plate, going 2-for-25 over his last seven games. That's brought his season slash line down to .156/.256/.319, a far cry from his .260/.339/.516 showing last season. Alejandro Kirk starts behind the plate Saturday.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Sits after four straight starts

Jansen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Though Jansen is on the bench Wednesday, he started at either catcher or designated hitter in each of the previous four games and appears to be moving into a quasi-everyday role. With the lefty-hitting Brandon Belt having now hit the bench in two straight matchups against right-handed pitching, Jansen could end up seeing the bulk of the work behind the plate, which would allow Alejandro Kirk to serve mainly as a DH.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Swats two home runs

Jansen went 3-for-4 with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the White Sox. Jansen notched his second and third homers of the season Tuesday, hitting a three-run home run in the third inning off Mike Clevinger and clubbing a solo homer off Tanner Banks in the sixth frame. He appears to have broken out of an early season slump, hitting 4-for-9 with three home runs, eight RBI and two runs scored in his last three games after starting the season 1-for-35. Considering Jansen is currently in a time split with Alejandro Kirk, most of his value comes in daily formats, where he is typically a cheap attachment to a strong offense, but he could push for season-long consideration if Kirk misses time or Jansen continues to carry a hot stick.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Hits pinch-hit homer in loss

Jansen hit a pinch hit, two-run home run in Saturday's loss against the Yankees. Jansen came up clutch in the eighth inning with a two-run shot of Wandy Peralta that tied the scored at 2-2. That's the first homer of the season for the backup backstop, and his first runs driven in since April 15 against the Rays. Jansen was solid with the bat in 2022 with an .855 OPS over 215 at-bats, but his .139/.244/.222 slash even with that homer against the Yankees on Saturday gives an indication of just how much he's struggled over the first few weeks of 2023.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Struggling at plate

Jansen went 0-for-3 in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers, dropping his spring batting average to .156 (5-for-32). The 27-year-old catcher is locked into a spot on the big-league roster and will split time behind the plate with Alejandro Kirk (illness) this season, so his spring numbers don't mean a whole lot. Jansen set new career highs with 15 homers and an .855 OPS in 2022, giving him plenty of appeal as both a later-round catching option and a DFS play on days he gets the start.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Avoids arbitration with Toronto

Jansen signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Blue Jays on Friday to avoid arbitration, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Jansen was superb at the dish when healthy in 2022, producing an .855 OPS with 15 home runs over 72 games. His playing time in 2023 could be affected by the Brandon Belt signing if it means more catching for Alejandro Kirk, but the reality is Jansen hasn't reached 250 plate appearances either of the last two seasons, anyway. He's still capable of being a viable second fantasy catcher even with a truncated workload.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Retreats to bench Monday

Jansen isn't starting Monday against the Orioles. Jansen is getting a breather after he went 6-for-14 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI and four runs over the last four games. Alejandro Kirk will start at catcher and bat cleanup.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Drives in five during win

Jansen went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, five RBI and a run scored in Saturday's win over the Red Sox. Jansen contributed with an RBI single, a two-run double and a solo homer off righty reliever Zack Kelly with one out in the fifth inning. The catcher has put together a 6-for-13 stretch during his last four games, including two home runs and a double. In addition, this was the 27-year-old's second three-hit game in his last 10 contests.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Out of Tuesday's lineup

Jansen is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Yankees. Jansen is hitting .260/.349/.449 with six home runs in 43 games since the All-Star break. Alejandro Kirk draws the start at catcher with Cavan Biggio starting at first base and Vladimir Guerrero starting at designated hitter.

  • Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Takes seat Saturday

Jansen isn't starting Saturday against the Rays. Jansen started the last two games and went 1-for-6 with a run, an RBI and a walk. Alejandro Kirk will take over behind the plate and bat cleanup.

Jansen isn't starting Wednesday against Philadelphia. Jansen started the last four games and went 6-for-15 with a home run, three doubles, three RBI, two runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Alejandro Kirk will take over behind the plate and bat cleanup.
