Player Outlook
Paul Sewald finally got the opportunity to be a primary closer in 2023 thanks to his consistent performance in high leverage over the past few seasons. He racked up a career-high 34 saves -- 21 with Seattle, plus another 13 after his trade to Arizona -- good for seventh in the majors. His team save share with both the Mariners and D'Backs was above 80%, which combined would have ranked fourth overall among closers. Combine this with perennially solid ratios and strikeout rate near 30% and Sewald is right on the brink of being a top-10 closer. Realistically, he'll settle in the 11-15 range among closers for 2024 drafts, but there's comfort in knowing what to expect from Sewald. The 33-year-old gave up more contact last season, but his hard-hit rate and average exit velocity were both in the 94th percentile or better. Sewald shouldn't have much competition for saves for the defending National League champions as along as he puts his World Series struggles behind him.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Lands on 15-day IL

The Diamondbacks placed Sewald (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Sewald is eligible to return from the IL on April 9, but given that he was diagnosed earlier this week with a Grade 2 left oblique strain, he'll most likely be sidelined well beyond the 15-day minimum. In Sewald's absence, the Diamondbacks are likely to turn over closing duties to Kevin Ginkel.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Starting season on IL

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Sewald has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique strain and will start the season on the injured list, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Sewald had a productive spring training, as he allowed no runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five across six innings. It's unclear when he sustained the injury, but the right-hander will spend time on the IL to start the 2024 season. With Sewald out, Kevin Ginkel is the most likely candidate to close for the Diamondbacks in the interim.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: No runs allowed

Sewald threw a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's spring game against Cleveland. It wasn't a save situation, but manager Torey Lovullo gave Sewald a taste of the closer's role by having him enter the ninth inning. He has not allowed a run in six spring outings and appears ready for the regular season. The Diamondbacks have one more Cactus League game Sunday followed by a pair of exhibition matchups Monday and Tuesday, so Sewald could get one more outing before Thursday's Opening Day against Colorado.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Another run-free outing

Sewald struck out two over a hitless and scoreless inning in Monday's spring game against Oakland. Sewald made his fourth Cactus League appearance and left a scoreless spring intact after pitching a perfect seventh inning. His velocity was down compared to last season, per Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports, but manager Torey Lovullo downplayed that as the normal ramping up through the course of spring training. Additionally, none of the 14 pitches (nine strikes) he threw were a changeup -- a pitch he's incorporating to his arsenal this spring to prevent batters from keying in on his fastball. "I need something to drop to make my fastball look even more like it rises," Sewald told Jesse Borek of MLB.com about the new pitch. "So that's kind of the point -- that people can't cheat to my fastball." Sewald's allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three over four scoreless spring innings as he prepares to be Arizona's closer.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Nets $7.35 from Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks and Sewald avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $7.35 million contract Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. It's Sewald's final year of arbitration eligibility, as he's currently slated to hit the free-agent market next offseason. The 33-year-old held a 3.12 ERA and 80:24 K:BB over 60.2 frames while notching 34 saves between the Mariners and Diamondbacks in 2023. With an unquestioned closer gig heading into 2024, Sewald's fantasy arrow is pointing up.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Secures sixth save of postseason

Sewald pitched a perfect inning to close out the game in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Phillies in Game 7 of the NLCS. Sewald has yet to give up a run in the playoffs this year, putting together a dominant run of six saves in as many opportunities. The right-hander generated flyouts on all three outs as the Phillies were likely attempting to make any kind of contact to spare elimination. The 33-year-old closer will now have the opportunity to prepare for his first World Series. He has pitched to a 0.50 WHIP across eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts this postseason.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Secures first postseason win

Sewald allowed one walk in a scoreless inning to earn the win in Thursday's 2-1 victory over the Phillies in Game 3 of the NLCS. He struck out one. Sewald was called into the tied game in the top of the ninth to hold things even for his offense, and he succeeded, with only a walk to Geraldo Perdomo spoiling his final line. Ketel Marte's walk-off hit in the ninth inning left Sewald with the first postseason win of his career, although he does have four saves so far this October. During that stretch, Sewald has pitched to a 0.60 WHIP across five scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Secures 32nd save

Sewald picked up the save in Saturday's win over the Cubs, allowing one unearned run on one hit over one inning. He did not record any strikeouts or walks. Sewald entered the game with a two-run lead in the bottom of the 10th and retired the first two batters before giving up an RBI single to Cody Bellinger to cut the lead to one run. The right-hander then got Dansby Swanson to foul out for the final out of the game, giving Sewald his fourth save this month. He's now converted 11 of his last 12 save opportunities, though he's failed to record a strikeout in three straight appearances.

Since joining the Diamondbacks, he's registered a 4.63 ERA, driving his season ERA to 3.29 through 54.2 frames. • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Secures save Friday

Sewald allowed a hit and struck out two over one scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 4-2 win over the Orioles. Sewald had a couple of rough outings in August, but he's mostly been steady since he was acquired from the Mariners. The right-hander threw 16 pitches (11 strikes) in Friday's outing, his first action since a blown save last Saturday. For the season, he's 29-for-34 in save chances while posting a 3.19 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 74:21 K:BB through 53.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Blows save Saturday

Sewald gave up two runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning, taking a blown save in Saturday's 8-7 extra-innings loss to the Reds. Sewald has mostly danced around danger effectively since he was traded from Seattle, but he couldn't do it Saturday. A Tyler Stephenson RBI double and a Matt McLain groundout produced the pair of runs on Sewald's line in his second blown save in nine chances with the Diamondbacks. He's now at a 3.25 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 72:21 K:BB through 52.2 innings on the year while converting 28 of 33 save chances.

Sewald recorded a save against Cincinnati on Thursday, issuing one walk and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning. Sewald came on in the top of the ninth frame with Arizona holding a tenuous one-run lead. He issued a free pass with one out but retired the next two batters to seal the deal. Sewald blew his first save opportunity with Arizona on Aug. 6 but has gone a perfect 7-for-7 since, posting eight scoreless innings and a 9:5 K:BB over that span.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Secures 26th save

Sewald recorded his 26th save of the season in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Padres, walking two batters in a scoreless ninth inning. The outing was very nearly a disaster for the former Mariner. Sewald also hit Garrett Cooper with a pitch, loading the bases with two outs, but Juan Soto's drive to left-center field died on the warning track rather than clearing the fence for a walk-off grand slam. Sewald's converted five straight save chances after blowing his first one for Arizona following his acquisition at the trade deadline, but he's been far from impressive for his new club with a 4.50 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB through six innings. Barring a complete collapse, however, his spot in the ninth inning appears secure.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Unavailable for save

Sewald was not available to pitch Thursday when Justin Martinez notched the save in a 3-1 win over San Diego. Neither Sewald nor Kevin Ginkel were available to close things out for the Diamondbacks, so manager Torey Lovullo had Martinez get the final four outs. Sewald and Ginkel had each pitched four times in the prior five days.

Sewald picked up the save Wednesday against Colorado, allowing one hit while striking out two over a scoreless inning. Sewald entered the game with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a leadoff single to Charlie Blackmon before retiring the next three batters, two of which went down swinging. The veteran reliever has now converted each of his last four save opportunities, racking up five strikeouts to only one walk over that scoreless stretch. He has, however, allowed a total of four hits over his last two appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Escapes with save

Sewald picked up the save in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Rockies. He allowed three hits and struck out one over a scoreless inning. Though Sewald got himself into a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth, he managed to retire Charlie Blackmon and Ezequiel Tovar to cap off his third save as a Diamondback and the 24th of the 2023 campaign. After being rocked for three runs and two home runs in his first appearance with Arizona, Sewald has bounced back with three straight scoreless innings and has converted on all three save attempts during that span. On the year, Sewald owns a 3.26 ERA and a 66:16 K:BB through 47 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Allows two home runs Sunday

Sewald (3-2) was charged with the loss and a blown save after allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while failing to record an out in the ninth inning against the Twins on Sunday. Sewald had a nightmare outing in just his second appearance since being acquired by the Diamondbacks. Max Kepler led off the ninth with a home run to tie up the game. Sewald then walked Jorge Polanco before Matt Wallner crushed a fastball to walk it off for the Twins. It was a dramatic meltdown for Sewald, who had given up just one run over his prior 10 appearances, but he'll remain the closer unless his struggles persist across multiple outings.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Makes D-backs debut

Sewald struck out three over a scoreless seventh inning in Saturday's 12-1 loss to the Twins. Sewald, the closer Arizona acquired at the trade deadline, made his debut for his new organization, entering in the seventh inning of a 10-1 game. Because of the Diamondbacks' slump -- they've lost five straight since the trade -- there have been no save opportunities for Sewald. Despite seven days between outings, the right-hander was sharp, throwing nine of 12 pitches for strikes.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Dealt to Arizona

The Mariners traded Sewald to the Diamondbacks on Monday in exchange for Dominic Canzone, Josh Rojas and Ryan Bliss, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. This is a great landing spot for Sewald as it pertains to his fantasy value, as he shouldn't have any competition for saves in Arizona. The Diamondbacks had been using a committee approach to the ninth inning, and Sewald has a 2.93 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 21 saves in 43 innings this season. He also has 55 career saves and is under team control through the 2024 season.

  • Mariners' Paul Sewald: Converts 21st save

Sewald walked one and struck out one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Sewald had allowed a run in back-to-back outings entering Friday, something that's only happened twice to him this season. The right-hander responded with a steady appearance to pick up his 21st save in 24 chances. He's maintained a 2.93 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 60:14 K:BB through 43 innings this season.
