Tigers' Matt Manning: Fans seven in loss
Manning (0-1) took the loss against the Twins on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.2 innings.
Manning struggled out of the gate, walking each of the first two batters he faced to open the game before allowing the Twins' first run to come home on a sacrifice fly. The right-hander was then victimized by the long ball in the third and sixth innings as Detroit struggled to back him with anything on offense. It wasn't all bad for Manning, however, as he did fan seven batters on the day while producing 12 swinging strikes. He's gone at least five innings in each of his two starts this season and is still sporting a 2.92 ERA following the loss.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Returns to Triple-A
Manning was returned to Triple-A Toledo after Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins.
The right-hander was called up to start the nightcap Saturday and took the loss after giving up four runs with a 7:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings. Manning has a 2.92 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in two outings as a spot starter for Detroit, and he'll remain the No. 1 candidate for a call-up when the big club again needs a starter.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Confirmed for Saturday start
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced Manning will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
The announcement is hardly a surprise, as Manning was scratched from his scheduled start with Toledo on Wednesday in preparation of a postponement. The right-hander made his season debut April 4 against the Mets and didn't allow a hit with four walks and three strikeouts over 5.2 scoreless frames.

Even before the series opener with the Twins was officially postponed Thursday, the Tigers were seemingly prepared for the possibility of a doubleheader being created this weekend due to a rainout. As Jason Beck of MLB.com notes, Manning was scratched from his scheduled start with Toledo on Wednesday for what appear to be non-injury-related reasons, so he's the logical choice to fill the opening in the rotation with Saturday's doubleheader creating a stretch of six games in five days for Detroit. Manning previously made his season debut with the Tigers on April 4, striking out three over 5.2 scoreless, no-hit frames in a no-decision against the Mets in the second game of a twin bill.

Manning was returned to Triple-A Toledo after the Tigers' 2-1 loss to the Mets in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader.
Manning drew the start in the second game, but he didn't factor into the decision while covering 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out three and allowing no hits and issuing four walks. Though he'll head back to the minors, Manning will be the top option to join the big-league rotation if a more permanent spot opens up.

The Tigers added Manning to the active roster to start Thursday's nightcap against the Mets.
Manning gave up one earned run over five innings during his first start of the year in Triple-A, and he'll now get a chance to make his first MLB appearance of the year after failing to make the Tigers' rotation out of spring training. Manning wasn't able to secure a spot in the Tigers' Opening Day rotation, but he won't have to wait long to make his first start of the season with the big club. As a result of weather-related postponements on consecutive days, the Tigers and Mets will play a twin bill Thursday in Citi Field, creating a stretch of seven games in six days for Detroit. Manning will be designated as the 27th man for the twin bill and will serve as a temporary sixth starter before likely being optioned back to Toledo immediately following the start against the Mets. Manning looked sharp in his lone outing for Toledo last Friday, striking out seven while pitching five innings of one-run ball.

The Tigers optioned Manning to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
He was in a hard-fought battle for one of the final two spots in the Tigers' rotation, but the club has opted to go with Casey Mize and Reese Olson. Manning should still ultimately spend a good chunk of the season in Detroit's rotation, but for now he'll head to Toledo to start every fifth day.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Struggles Saturday
Manning allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks across three innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates. He struck out five.
Manning was tagged for three home runs, including a two-run blast by Jake Lamb in the first inning. The five strikeouts are encouraging, but Manning now has a subpar 5.63 ERA across three starts this spring. The righty is jockeying for a spot at the back of Detroit's rotation, with Reese Olson looking like his primary competition at this point. Manning could have some fantasy value in the right matchups if he's starting, though he's a risky proposition after dealing with injuries throughout his MLB career so far.

Manning (foot) has had a normal offseason throwing routine and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training, MLB.com reports.
Manning sustained a fractured foot after being struck by a line drive off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton in September. The injury ended his 2023 season, though it doesn't seem like it should impact the righty in 2024. Manning finished last year with a solid 3.58 ERA and 1.04 WHIP across 78 innings (15 starts), though he struck out only 50 batters.
