Groome was optioned to Triple-A El Paso by the Padres on Saturday.
Groome didn't make any Cactus League appearances for the Padres before being given the pink slip. The left-hander is coming off a dreadful 2023 season with El Paso, having posted an 8.55 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 137:112 K:BB over 134.2 innings.

Groome was optioned to Triple-A El Paso by the Padres on Monday.
Groome showed some flashes of brilliance in Arizona during the Cactus League with a 1.29 ERA, but he also registered a 13:10 K:BB which showed that the command still has some work to be done. The 2016 first-round pick could be an option for San Diego before the end of the year.

Padres' Jay Groome: Could make team as long reliever
Padres manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Groome has chance of making the Padres' Opening Day roster as a long reliever out of the bullpen, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan reports.
Groome was acquired by the Padres last August in the deal that brought Eric Hosmer to Boston. The left-handed hurler has yet to make his major-league debut, but he's been solid this spring, pitching 10.2 scoreless innings during which he's registered 10 strikeouts. On a less promising note, Groome has walked seven batters, but he appears to be impressing enough to earn serious consideration for a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old has pitched almost exclusively as a starter in the minors, so a long-relief role would enable him to stay stretched out enough to work as a spot starter, if needed.

Padres' Jay Groome: Dealt to San Diego
The Padres acquired Groome from the Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for Eric Hosmer, Max Ferguson and Corey Rosier, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
The Padres will pay the majority of the money owed to Hosmer and in return they will get Groome back in the deal. Once a big-name prospect after being seen as perhaps the top prep pitcher in the 2016 Draft class, Groome has dealt with injuries and diminished stuff since his days as an amateur. He could still make the big leagues as a back-end starter or swingman. Groome has a 2.87 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 57:30 K:BB in 53.1 innings over his last 10 starts split between Double-A and Triple-A.

Groome allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five over six scoreless innings for Triple-A Worcester on Friday.

The Red Sox promoted Groome from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
A 2016 first-round draft pick, Groome's ascent through the Red Sox farm system was slowed by the Tommy John surgery he had in the spring of 2018 and the cancellation of the 2020 minor-league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He's enjoyed generally good health for the past season and a half, however, and the 6-foot-6 lefty has resumed displaying the skills that made him a sought-after prep arm a half-decade ago. Though his strikeout and walk rates have trended in the wrong direction at Portland compared to a year ago, the 23-year-old Groome still punched out 24.9 percent of the batters he faced in 2022 while submitting a 3.52 ERA over 76.2 innings.

Groome allowed one hit and struck out four over five scoreless innings for Double-A Portland on Wednesday.
Groome picked up where he left off for Portland at the end of 2021, as he went 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA, .211 batting-average against and 26 strikeouts over 15.2 innings (three starts) for the Sea Dogs last September. His career since being selected in the first round (12th overall) of the 2016 draft has been notable mostly for injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2018. The left-hander threw a career-high 97.1 innings last season and is experiencing his longest stretch of health since joining professional ball. There's still time for the 23-year-old, who stands at 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds, to reclaim the promise he once had.

Nothing about Groome's stay at High-A Greenville suggested he deserved the promotion, but the change of scenery may be what the 2016 12th-overall pick needed. Prior to his promotion, Groome went 3-8 with a 5.29 ERA over 81.2 innings (18 starts) for the Drive. The left-hander has endured multiple injuries over five years in the minors, including 2018 Tommy John elbow surgery, which had limited him to 66 innings since 2016. Groome is up to 86.2 innings in 2021.

Red Sox's Jay Groome: Tough season continues
Groome was beaten up for eight runs (seven earned) in five innings for High-A Greenville against Hickory on Tuesday.
He now owns a 2-8 record, 5.35 ERA, 1.322 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB in 75.2 innings. It's been an awfully tough season for Groome, but he'd actually been pitching noticeably better before this last outing -- over his prior nine starts, he'd posted a 3.74 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Obviously, his strikeout ability is tantalizing, and considering that Groome is coming back from a series of injuries, the simple fact that he's mostly stayed on the field this season is a major win. With his injury history, the Red Sox will likely continue taking a slow and steady approach to his development.

Groome (lower leg) owns a 10.64 ERA, 2.36 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB over 11 innings in his four starts with High-A Greenville this season.
Groome was lifted in his second start of the season May 11 after being struck in the leg by a line drive, but he's been able to make his last two turns through the rotation. The results haven't been impressive, however, with Groome's poor control particularly standing out. The 22-year-old lefty has posted walk rates north of nine percent in each of his seasons at Low-A or High-A ball, and that trend is on track to continue in 2021.

He has thrown a couple bullpen sessions, but this will be his first time facing live hitters at Pawtucket. The Red Sox will need to add Groome to the 40-man roster this offseason in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, so this will give him an opportunity to show the new front office what they have in him. Groome, the 12th overall pick in the 2016 draft, is an exciting talent, but injuries have limited him to just 17 career minor-league starts. His surgery will keep him out for the remainder of the season and a large portion of 2019, though he'll still be just 20 years old when he returns.

This is yet another tough break for the 19-year-old prospect, who has already dealt with a number of injuries during his short professional career.
