All of the damage was done in the first inning, with the big blow being a grand slam off the bat of Daulton Varsho. Hudson settled in from there and now has a respectable 4.15 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through 17.1 innings this season, though he's made just one of his three starts so far at the notoriously hitter-friendly Coors Field. He should be considered a volatile and risky option given his lack of whiffs.

Hudson wasn't as sharp as he was in his season opener, allowing eight batters to reach base Sunday, but ultimately he was able to keep the damage limited. The Rays scratched across two runs in the second inning and then one more in the third frame and after that, Hudson tossed three shutout innings to finish his outing. The right-hander has now produced a 2.38 ERA with six punchouts over 11.1 innings in his first two starts of the 2024 campaign. Hudson allowed just three baserunners and no runs through five innings while matching Shota Imanaga pitch-for-pitch. He then ran into some trouble in the sixth when, with two men on and one out, he allowed a single to Christopher Morel that would have loaded the bases. However, a fielding error followed by a throwing error by left-fielder Nolan Jones led to a little-league home run with all three runs crossing the plate and Hudson's day coming to an end with a tough-luck loss. Hudson is tentatively scheduled to next take the hill this weekend in his first home start as a member of the Rockies against the Rays.

Signed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal in January after being non-tendered by the Cardinals earlier in the offseason, Hudson was able to secure a spot in Colorado's Opening Day rotation, though he didn't face much in the way of quality competition for a spot. He was solid if unspectacular over his five Cactus League starts, posting a 4.20 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB in 15 innings in mostly hitter-friendly venues in Arizona. Hudson's career-long 55.1 percent groundball rate could set him up for more success in the high altitude of Colorado than a typical power pitcher, but he was never a major ERA or WHIP asset during parts of six big-league seasons in St. Louis. The 29-year-old should be viewed mostly as an NL-only option, and a low-upside one at that given the weak ratios he's posted throughout his career.

Hudson entered the bottom of the fifth with a 5-3 lead and a chance to put himself in position for the victory but recorded only one out while allowing a run and loading the bases prior to being pulled. Andre Pallante replaced Hudson and promptly allowed a grand slam to Cedric Mullins, which closed the door on Hudson's outing and the Cardinals' chances. Hudson has now allowed five or more runs in three of his last four starts. His next chance for redemption is scheduled to come this weekend in a tough home matchup with the Phillies.

Hudson was staked to an early 6-0 lead before yielding two runs in the fourth inning. He was still ahead 7-2 entering the sixth but couldn't record an out in that frame, allowing four straight baserunners -- three of whom crossed the plate -- before his departure. Hudson nonetheless collected the win, his fifth over his past seven outings. He's settled into a spot in the Cardinals' rotation and should remain there for the rest of the campaign, as he's posted a passable 4.54 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 41.2 innings across seven starts since the beginning of August.
