Shockingly enough, Hudson's three strikeouts were his most in a start since he had seven Aug. 20. He had just five strikeouts in his previous four starts and has only managed to reach six innings once in his last six starts. The 28-year-old is up to a 5.12 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 40:30 K:BB in 70.1 innings. He's projected to face the Padres on the road in his next outing.

Hudson (6-2) took the loss Monday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Orioles. He struck out two.
Hudson entered the bottom of the fifth with a 5-3 lead and a chance to put himself in position for the victory but recorded only one out while allowing a run and loading the bases prior to being pulled. Andre Pallante replaced Hudson and promptly allowed a grand slam to Cedric Mullins, which closed the door on Hudson's outing and the Cardinals' chances. Hudson has now allowed five or more runs in three of his last four starts. His next chance for redemption is scheduled to come this weekend in a tough home matchup with the Phillies.

Hudson was staked to an early 6-0 lead before yielding two runs in the fourth inning. He was still ahead 7-2 entering the sixth but couldn't record an out in that frame, allowing four straight baserunners -- three of whom crossed the plate -- before his departure. Hudson nonetheless collected the win, his fifth over his past seven outings. He's settled into a spot in the Cardinals' rotation and should remain there for the rest of the campaign, as he's posted a passable 4.54 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 41.2 innings across seven starts since the beginning of August.
Hudson did not factor into the decision Friday, tossing seven innings and giving up one run on three hits and two walks in the Cardinals' 4-2 extra-inning loss to the Pirates.
Hudson gave up an RBI double to Alfonso Rivas in the top of the second inning, but he went unscathed the rest of the way. The right-hander matched his longest outing of the season at seven frames and he has recorded three quality starts over his last six outings. Hudson owns a respectable 4.02 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 33 strikeouts over 56 innings in 13 starts this season.

Hudson came into the contest having won each of his previous four starts, but he couldn't continue that streak against the Phillies. The right-hander made it through two scoreless frames, but Philadelphia tagged him for at least one run in each of the remaining innings in which he pitched. The five total runs Hudson allowed tied a campaign-high mark, and Saturday was the first time he's issued more than three walks in an outing this season. Despite a 5-1 record, Hudson's 4.41 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB over 49 innings make him far from a reliable fantasy asset.

The one knock on Hudson is he's allowed at least one home run in each of his last four starts but has otherwise been the Cardinals' most consistent pitcher. He now owns a 3.95 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB in 43.1 innings (five starts) and will look to pick up his fifth consecutive win in a weekend road matchup with the Phillies.

Steven Matz had mixed results starting Saturday's regularly-scheduled contest, but Hudson provided quality work in a de facto piggyback role. Over four appearances in the majors, Hudson has given up three runs (two earned) across 10 innings, good for a 1.80 ERA despite a 1.20 WHIP. He's been limited to relief work so far, but there's an opening in the rotation with Adam Wainwright (shoulder) still on the injured list for at least two more weeks. The Cardinals don't have any days off in that span, so Hudson could be a candidate to make two or three starts if that's the decision manager Oliver Marmol makes.
The Cardinals recalled Hudson from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.
Hudson was sent back to Memphis a day after serving as the Cardinals' 27th man in last Saturday's doubleheader with the Yankees, but he'll be back with the big club less than a week later after starter Adam Wainwright (shoulder) was moved to the injured list Tuesday. Steven Matz is set to move into the rotation Wednesday against the Marlins, so Hudson looks as though he'll have to settle for a long-relief role while he's up with the Cardinals, likely through the All-Star break.
