  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Summoned from Triple-A

The Cardinals recalled Woodford from Triple-A Memphis on Monday. He'll be joining the St. Louis bullpen as a replacement for right-hander Giovanny Gallegos, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis. Woodford will make his return to St. Louis' active roster for the first time since late June, as he was on the shelf for just over two months before being activated and optioned to Triple-A on Sept. 1. Since beginning his rehab assignment Aug. 10, Woodford has been getting stretched out during his time in the minors, making seven appearances over the past five weeks while pitching to a 2.18 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB over 20.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Activated, optioned to Memphis

The Cardinals reinstated Woodford (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. A right shoulder strain forced Woodford onto the IL in late June, and he'll now remain in the minors upon completing his rehab assignment. The 26-year-old righty accumulated a 5.67 ERA and 1.69 WHIP through 39.2 frames with St. Louis, but he could potentially return to the majors as a depth piece if he keeps performing well in Triple-A (2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP).

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Strikes out six in rehab outing

Woodford (shoulder) struck out six and worked around two hits and one walk in 3.1 scoreless innings in his latest rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis. Woodford had started in each of his previous four rehab outings, but he worked in relief behind Matthew Liberatore (back) on Tuesday. The right-hander still tossed 66 pitches (40 strikes) in the extended relief appearance, as the Cardinals appear to be entertaining the possibility of bringing Woodford back as a member of the rotation once he's reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Before landing on the IL in late June, Woodford had been working out of the bullpen, but the Cardinals could view him as an upgrade over some of their current back-end rotation options.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Terrific in latest rehab start

Woodford (shoulder) yielded just one hit while striking out six over five scoreless frames in a rehab start with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday. The right-hander needed just 56 pitches to cruise through his five innings in what could be his final rehab appearance before rejoining the Cardinals. With the rotation needs St. Louis has right now, Woodford would seem to be a good bet to be used as a starter down the stretch. He's been out since late June with a right shoulder strain.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: On rehab assignment

Woodford (shoulder) made his third rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Memphis, striking out three over 1.2 scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and walked one. Woodford made two appearances for Double-A Springfield before advancing to Memphis as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain. He could get some starts down the stretch for a Cardinals club whose rotation depth has been depleted by trades and injury, but he'll need to build up further before getting a look as a starter in the big leagues.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Advances to mound work

Woodford (shoulder) is slated to throw a bullpen session Saturday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Woodford resumed throwing on flat ground earlier this month and is now ready to advance to mound work. The 26-year-old swingman has been limited to six starts and six relief appearances this season with the Cardinals due to multiple shoulder injuries, but he could be an important factor down the stretch if St. Louis moves multiple pitchers ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Begins throwing program

Woodford (shoulder) has begun a throwing program, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Woodford landed on the injured list in late June with a right shoulder strain, which is the second stint he's had on the IL this season with a shoulder issue. There's no timetable for the swingman's return.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Placed on injured list

The Cardinals placed Woodford on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right shoulder strain. Woodford was lit up for four runs across 2.1 innings during Thursday's game against Houston, and he's now on the IL with a shoulder strain for the second time this season. He holds a 5.67 ERA and 1.69 WHIP on the season and will be eligible to return shortly after the All-Star break. James Naile was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Posts second win

Woodford (2-2) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one over 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Cubs. Starter Matthew Liberatore received an early pull Sunday, and Woodford provided solid relief innings. Over four appearances since rejoining the Cardinals' active roster, Woodford has allowed three runs, six hits and four walks while striking out six over 7.1 innings. He has a 5.06 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB through 37.1 innings over 11 appearances (six starts) this season, but he's primarily worked as a reliever recently. Woodford or Steven Matz would be the top candidates to join the rotation if Jack Flaherty (hip) ends up on the injured list.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Brought up from Triple-A

Woodford was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Woodford was activated and optioned last Friday after recovering from a shoulder issue, but he's back in the majors now to replace Ryan Helsley (forearm). He figures to be used as a long reliever.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Activated and optioned

Woodford (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday and optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Woodford is recovered from the bout of shoulder inflammation that sent him to the injured list in early May, but the Cardinals will keep him in the rotation at Memphis for now. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 3.38 ERA with six strikeouts in three rehab starts covering eight innings.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Another rehab start Saturday

Woodford (shoulder) is slated for a second rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Woodford gave up two earned runs on three hits and one walk over two innings Tuesday in his rehab debut with Memphis. He threw only 37 pitches in that outing and will technically be pitching on short rest (for a starter) in this next one, so it's becoming fairly clear that the Cardinals intend to bring him back as a long reliever. The 26-year-old has been on the injured list since May 5 due to right shoulder inflammation.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Beginning rehab assignment

Woodford (shoulder) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Woodford will work as a starter on the farm, though he's probably better suited for long relief duties considering the current state of the Cardinals' pitching depth chart. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 30 innings (six starts, one relief appearances) this season prior to landing on the injured list May 5 due to shoulder inflammation.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Nearing rehab assignment

Woodford (shoulder) threw a bullpen session without issue Tuesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Woodford will do a similar workout Friday before likely then heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Sidelined since May 5 due to right shoulder inflammation, the 26-year-old projects to return to the Cardinals in a long-relief role sometime in early June.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Week away from mound work

Woodford (shoulder) is at least a week away from throwing off a mound, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Woodford should soon resume throwing on flat ground, but the Cardinals are slow-playing his recovery from a bout of right shoulder inflammation. He was placed on the injured list May 5, two days after losing his spot in the starting rotation. The 26-year-old figures to return as a long reliever whenever he's deemed ready for a return.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Placed on 15-day IL

Woodford was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Woodford lost his rotation spot Thursday and is now also off the active 26-man roster as he works through a bout of shoulder trouble. The 26-year-old right-hander leaves behind a 5.40 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 30 innings of work this season for St. Louis.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Moved to bullpen

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Woodford will be available out of the bullpen beginning with Thursday's game against the Angels, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Woodford's demotion to the bullpen comes with Adam Wainwright (groin) in line to return from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday against the Tigers. Woodford had struggled to a 5.72 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB through 28.1 innings (six starts) this season for St. Louis.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Coughs up three runs

Woodford yielded three runs on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. Woodford gave up just one run through three innings before the Dodgers plated a pair in the fourth. The 26-year-old righty was ineffective Sunday, needing 90 pitches to get through the short outing. He forced four swinging strikes, tied for his lowest total of the year, and saw his ERA climb to 5.72 across 28.1 frames. With Adam Wainwright (groin) nearing a return, it's unclear if Woodford will get another turn in the rotation.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Fares well in no-decision

Woodford allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's no-decision against the Giants. He struck out four. The Giants scrapped out a run against Woodford in the second inning after Thairo Estrada singled, stole second base and wound up scoring on a throwing error. Woodford would later surrender a solo home run to Mike Yastrzemski in the fourth and then retired the final seven batters he faced before being lifted in sixth. The 26-year-old has been a serviceable rotation member for the Cardinals outside of his first start of the year. He now sits at a 5.47 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 16:7 K:BB over 24.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles over the weekend.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Gives up four runs in win

Woodford (1-2) earned the win Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings during a 14-5 victory over the Diamondbacks. He struck out one. After Woodford allowed three runs to let Arizona tie the game at 3-3, the Cardinals' offense struck for four more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The right-hander served up a solo shot to Pavin Smith in the fourth but proceeded to post a scoreless fifth to put himself in line for a win. It was Woodford's first win of the season, but he's had three straight decent outings after giving up six runs in his first start. He's tentatively scheduled to pitch again during St. Louis' upcoming four-game road set in San Francisco next week.
