Anthony Santander's triple slash improved across the board as he benefited from legislating the shift. The switch-hitter faced a shift 89.4 percent of the time as a lefty in 2022, posting a .219 BABIP. Last season, he was shaded 65.3 percent of the time when batting left-handed, leading to a .292 BABIP. The higher BABIP helped counter a career high strikeout rate, though it wasn't egregiously high. Santander's homers dropped, but his percentage of extra base hits increased four points, so his slugging percentage improved. After stealing just three career bases heading into last season, Santander was 5-for-6 with the new rules, so there's some hope he'll run a tad more. Santander's defense remained a tick above average in right field, assuring he'll continue to play nearly every day, even as the Orioles continue to promote prospects to the majors. There isn't an area where Santander pops with upside, but he's a durable and reliable compiler on a team with a potent lineup.

Santander went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Twins. Santander has gone 3-for-18 over his last five contests. That's not a great stretch, but so far, he's in little danger of losing playing time as manager Brandon Hyde gets creative to keep Colton Cowser in the lineup. Santander is batting .203 with four homers, 15 RBI, nine runs scored, two doubles and no stolen bases through 74 plate appearances as the Orioles' primary right fielder.

The 29-year-old is off to a bit of a slow start overall, slashing .216/.226/.431 over 53 plate appearances, but he already has three homers, 13 RBI, six runs scored and two doubles through 12 contests. Santander does not appear to be at risk of losing playing time.

Santander went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI on Thursday against the Angels. Santander drove in Baltimore's first run of the season on a fielder's choice in the first inning. However, he did his biggest damage three frames later, when he took Jose Suarez yard for a two-run homer -- his first of the season. • Orioles' Anthony Santander: Looking for rhythm at plate

Santander has gone 2-for-14 over his first five Grapefruit League games. Santander has just one strikeout in that span, but there's not many positives to take from that stat line. The outfielder had a career-high 95 RBI while hitting .257 with a .797 OPS and 28 home runs last season. He enters 2024 as the penciled-in starter in right field, though the Orioles have a crop of talented outfield prospects that could push him for playing time if he starts the campaign poorly.

  • Orioles' Anthony Santander: Settles with O's

Santander signed a one-year, $11.7 million contract with the Orioles on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Santander earned a $4.3 million raise after slashing .257/.325/.472 with 28 homers and 95 RBI across 656 plate appearances last year. Santander's strong bat has allowed him to maintain an everyday spot in Baltimore's lineup. However, his sub-par defense could lead to a tighter leash in 2024 as the Orioles continue to promote prospects to their major-league squad.
