Player Outlook
Bailey Falter was flipped from Philadelphia at the trade deadline in 2023, though his role, workload and skill all remained nearly identical before and after the trade. He threw a total of 80.2 uninspiring innings in the majors, as he saw his velocity dip to the lowest mark of his career (90.9), with a corresponding dip in swinging strike rate (7.9 percent) and strikeout rate (17.3 percent). Even on a team with a relatively uninspiring group of starters, it's unlikely that Falter will be able to earn anything more than spot starts and a bullpen role. Though he's not a closer of the future, Falter has had more success in relief in his career, holding opponents to a .303 wOBA with 52 strikeouts across 56.2 innings. He could turn into a relatively successful multi-inning reliever, though the fantasy value of that in most league formats is minimal.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Outdueled in Wednesday's loss

Falter (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings as the Pirates fell 9-1 to the Mets. He struck out four. The 26-year-old southpaw served up a two-run homer to Starling Marte in the third inning, but he otherwise shut New York down over 73 pitches (47 strikes). Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, Luis Severino was a little bit better for the home squad. Falter has been tagged for only three runs over his last three starts and 16 innings, lowering his ERA to 4.05, but his 10:5 K:BB through 20 frames on the year highlights his limited fantasy ceiling. He lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Brewers.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Earns first win

Falter (1-0) picked up the win in Friday's 5-2 victory over the Phillies, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out three batters across five innings. Falter rarely faltered against his former club, as his lone blemish came on an RBI single off the bat of Bryson Stott during the fifth inning. However, the 26-year-old southpaw still owns a 4.20 ERA on the year and has struck out just six batters through 15 frames, putting a relatively low ceiling on his fantasy value. He's lined up to make his next start on the road Wednesday against the Mets.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Holds O's to one hit over six

Falter allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one batter over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Orioles on Saturday. Falter actually took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, so it was a major improvement on his first outing of the season in which he allowed five runs before recording an out. The lefty only has three strikeouts in 10 innings so far this season and will likely remain a volatile option given the lack of whiffs. He will look to extract a bit of revenge against his old team in Philadelphia next week.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Allows six runs over four innings

Falter did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings against the Marlins. He struck out two. Falter allowed five runs in the first inning, capped by a grand slam by Jazz Chisholm, but settled down thereafter in allowing just one more run through four innings and giving the Pirates an opportunity for the comeback win. Falter earned the starting role out of spring training, but with the likes of Luis Ortiz and Roansy Contreras nipping at his heels on the big-league roster, along with Quinn Priester and Paul Skenes at Triple-A, Falter will need far better outings than what he produced Sunday to remain in the rotation. His next start won't get any easier, as he's tentatively slated for a home matchup against the Orioles next weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Confirmed for rotation

Manager Derek Shelton said Monday that Falter will be included in the Pirates' Opening Day rotation, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Earlier Monday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com confirmed that Falter had made the roster, but it wasn't immediately clear whether the southpaw would begin the season in the rotation or work in long relief. Shelton brought clarity on that front when he spoke to the media, with Falter's inclusion in the rotation seemingly indicating that Luis Ortiz has missed out on the No. 5 starter's role and will be ticketed for the bullpen or for Triple-A Indianapolis. Additionally, Shelton mapped out the rotation through the Pirates' first five games, noting that Falter is set to make his first turn in Sunday's series finale in Miami. Over 18 appearances (14 starts) between the Phillies and Pirates in 2023, Falter went 2-9 with a 5.36 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 60:20 K:BB over 80.2 innings.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Wins roster spot

Falter was informed Monday that he'll be included on the Opening Day roster, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Stumpf relays that prospect Jared Jones will be included in the Opening Day rotation, but it's not yet clear whether Falter, Luis Ortiz or someone else will fill the fifth and final starting spot. Falter doesn't have any minor-league options remaining, so if he misses out on a rotation spot, he would most head to the bullpen since he would have to be moved off the 40-man roster in order to be eligible to pitch in the minors.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: May lose out on rotation spot

Falter is in competition for the final spot in the Pirates' rotation to begin the season, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Falter is among several candidates vying for the role. He's allowed 12 baserunners across six innings of work in Grapefruit League action, though his 6:1 K:BB suggests perhaps he's gotten unlucky. The Pirates would likely prefer that Luis Ortiz or Jared Jones force their way into the rotation, and both have had impressive spring performances to this point. That could push Falter into a long relief role, as he has no minor-league options remaining.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Moves to injured list

Falter was placed on the 15-day injured list with neck soreness and overall fatigue Sunday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The left-hander was tagged for eight earned runs over two innings Saturday in Cincinnati, and his season will end a week early due to the injuries. Falter struggled as a rotation piece for both the Phillies and Pirates this year, and he closes the campaign with a 5.36 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 60:20 K:BB across 80.2 innings.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Getting another start

Falter is starting Tuesday's game against the Cubs in Chicago. Falter tossed six innings of one-run ball on 67 pitches the last time he drew a traditional start Sept. 12 versus the Nationals. The 26-year-old left-hander carries an overall 3.62 ERA and 30:9 K:BB through 37.1 innings of work with the Pirates, who acquired him from the Phillies at the Aug. 1 trade deadline in exchange for Rodolfo Castro.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Earns quality start, win

Falter (2-8) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over six innings in a 5-1 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four. Falter retired the first 11 Nationals in order before surrendering his lone earned run on an RBI single in the fourth inning. He earned his third quality start and second win of the campaign. The versatile southpaw has allowed just six hits and two earned runs while accumulating a 9:2 K:BB across his last 13.1 innings, spanning two bulk relief appearances and Tuesday's traditional start. It remains to be seen how Falter will be deployed in his next appearance, but he currently lines up to pitch in Pittsburgh's next series against the Yankees this weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Starting for Pirates on Tuesday

Falter will start for the Pirates on Tuesday against the Nationals, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Pittsburgh has used Falter as a bulk reliever three times and a traditional starter four times in his seven appearances since coming over from the Phillies via trade. The southpaw will be deployed in the latter role Tuesday, as manager Derek Shelton has opted against using an opener. Falter's last traditional start came on Aug. 27, when he was torched for six runs over 4.2 innings in a loss to the Cubs.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Works 3.2 innings behind opener

Falter allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters over 3.2 innings in bulk relief in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday. Falter came into the contest having started in 11 of his 13 appearances on the season, but Pittsburgh elected to use him behind an opener Saturday. The southpaw fared well in that role, giving up a solo homer to Lars Nootbaar in the fifth frame but otherwise keeping St. Louis off the scoreboard. The long ball was the only hit Falter allowed in 3.2 frames, but he was still pulled after a modest 43 pitches despite going at least 4.2 innings in each of his previous three outings. It's unclear if Falter will continue to work as a primary pitcher or move back to a traditional starting role moving forward.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Falls to Cubs

Falter (1-8) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out three. Falter held the Cubs to one run through his first three innings before Jeimer Candelario broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the fourth. That was followed by a Chicago three-run, two-out rally in the fifth. It was a tough day for the 26-year-old Falter, who allowed just two runs over his previous two outings (11.1 innings). The southpaw's ERA is now up to 5.04 with a 1.45 WHIP and 49:15 K:BB across 64.1 innings this season. Falter's currently scheduled for a road matchup with the Cardinals in his next start.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Earns win in bulk relief

Falter (1-7) earned the win Monday against the Cardinals. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings. The 26-year-old lefty operated as Pittsburgh's bulk reliever after Thomas Hatch pitched the first three innings in an opener role Monday. Apart from an Andrew Knizner solo home run in the fifth inning, Falter breezed through the final six innings of the contest, receiving ample run support and earning his first victory of the campaign. This marks back-to-back impressive outings for the southpaw, as he's allowed just two earned runs -- both solo home runs -- over 11.1 frames while posting a 13:3 K:BB during that span. It remains to be seen what Falter's role will be moving forward.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Struggles through four frames

Falter did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings against Atlanta. He struck out three. It was an ugly start for Falter as the recently acquired lefty allowed runs in each of the first three innings to put the Pirates in an early 4-0 hole. He finally managed to pitch a scoreless inning in the fourth, but he would not return in the fifth after reaching 86 pitches. Falter did manage to avoid taking his eighth loss thanks to Pittsburgh's late comeback, but he has yet to collect his first win of the season. He's now allowed at least four earned runs in three of his last five outings.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Remains in rotation

Falter is scheduled to start Thursday's game against Atlanta at PNC Park. After being acquired from the Phillies on Tuesday, Falter immediately reported to the Pirates and stepped in as the club's new No. 5 starter, filling the spot in the rotation that opened up when Rich Hill was dealt to the Padres earlier in the week. In his first big-league appearance since May 15 this past Saturday, Falter acquitted himself well in his Pirates debut, taking a no-decision while limiting the Brewers to one earned run on six hits and one walk. Despite the solid results against Milwaukee, Falter doesn't profile as a trustworthy streaming option while taking on a much stronger Atlanta offense that leads the majors in home runs by a wide margin (213 to 181) and ranks second in batting average (.270) this season.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Tosses four frames in team debut

Falter allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters over four-plus innings in a no-decision Saturday in the Pirates' 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Brewers. Falter was recalled from the minors ahead of Saturday's contest to make his first appearance in a Pittsburgh uniform after being acquired in a trade with the Phillies at the deadline. The southpaw made a decent impression, giving up six hits -- only one for extra bases -- and holding the Brewers to one run over four frames. Falter was ahead 2-0 heading into the fifth and could have had a shot at a win, but he was pulled in that inning after giving up a single to each of the first two batters he faced. It appears the 26-year-old will get a shot to remain in the Pirates' rotation with the team likely out of contention and looking to the future.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Recalled ahead of start

The Pirates officially recalled Falter ahead of his scheduled start Saturday against the Brewers, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Falter was added to the taxi squad Friday and is now on the Pirates' active roster for the first time after coming over from Philadelphia at the deadline in exchange for infielder Rodolfo Castro. While Falter has mostly struggled at the highest level this season (5.13 ERA, 1.44 WHIP), he showed promise in 2021 and 2022, and the Pirates are evaluating for the future.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Lit up in bulk role

Falter (0-7) took the loss in Monday's 6-3 defeat to San Francisco. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two over 4.1 innings. After seeing Falter struggle through his first seven starts, the Phillies elected to use an opener in front of the lefty and instead have him pitch in a bulk-relief role. The arrangement clearly didn't help. Falter gave up all six of his runs in the second inning, as the Giants sent 10 hitters to the plate. He's now sitting on a 5.13 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and just 28 strikeouts in 40.1 innings on the season.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Falls to 0-6

Falter (0-6) took the loss against Boston on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. Falter was perfect through three frames, but he imploded in the fourth. In that inning, he got only two outs and yielded six hits along with one walk, leading to five Red Sox runs. The southpaw has taken a loss in six of his seven outings this season, though this was only the second time he's given up more than four runs. With Ranger Suarez (elbow) headed back to the rotation next weekend, the Phillies are opting to move Matt Strahm to the bullpen, but Falter may need to show marked improvement moving forward if he's going to hold on to a starting role for the entire campaign.
