Astros' Ty Buttrey: Recovering from fractured finger

Buttrey announced Wednesday via his personal Twitter account that he has reported to the Astros' spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Fla. to begin rehab for a small hairline fracture in his right middle finger.
Buttrey disclosed that he sustained the injury while fielding a comebacker, presumably during his most recent appearance for Triple-A Sugar Land on April 25. Expect Sugar Land to place Buttrey on its 7-day injured list in the coming days. The 30-year-old right-hander had made a strong early case for a promotion to the big club after logging a 1.93 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 4.2 innings at Sugar Land.

The 29-year-old reliever spent all of last season at Triple-A Salt Lake in the Angels organization, posting a 5.94 ERA and 1.69 WHIP through 36.1 frames. Buttrey hasn't been particularly effective in the majors since 2019, so he could be destined for another season in the minors.

The 28-year-old indicated he initially made his decision to retire before being optioned to the minors March 28, and his mind remained unchanged after taking some additional time to contemplate the decision. Angels' Ty Buttrey: Yields three runs Sunday

Buttrey gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out two in one inning against the Padres in a Cactus League contest Sunday.
An inning-opening error meant that only one of the runs Buttrey allowed was earned, but it was still a rough outing for the right-hander as he gave up four hits, including two doubles. Buttrey should open the season in the Angels' bullpen but isn't likely to match the five saves he snagged last season given the presence of new closer Raisel Iglesias.
Buttrey (1-3) was charged with three runs on two hits and a walk over one-third of an inning in Friday's loss to the Rockies.
Buttrey got Matt Kemp to fly out to start his appearance, but he followed that with a solo home run by Ryan McMahon. Buttrey then allowed a double to Josh Fuentes and walked Daniel Murphy. Jose Quijada relieved Buttrey and the former gave up a two-out grand slam to Charlie Blackmon to complete the implosion by the Angels' bullpen. The poor outing inflated Buttrey's ERA to 6.04 with a 1.43 WHIP in 22.1 innings this year. The right-hander has five saves, but he's also blown four save chances. Felix Pena pitched a clean eighth inning prior to Buttrey's meltdown -- it might be Pena getting the nod for the Angels' next save chance.
Buttrey struck out one and nailed down the save Saturday against the Astros after tossing a scoreless inning in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader.
Buttrey bounced back after a woeful performance Friday, when he was unable to get the job done despite holding a three-run lead. Buttrey has blown three saves already this season and, while Saturday's performance might have bought him a bit more time as the Angels' closer, his role might be in jeopardy if he continues to be as inconsistent as he's been all season long.
