Edward Cabrera tends to oscillate between overpowering and self-destructive, with walks being the big culprit. Fortunately, his matchup against the Athletics this week helps his cause.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Walks four in no-decision
Cabrera allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Saturday. Cabrera came up an out short of his third quality start, but this was far from a good performance. Walks continue to be an issue for the right-hander, who has issued at least four free passes in six of his 11 outings this season. He's now at a 5.02 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 66:35 K:BB through 52 innings. Cabrera is lined up for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Turns in quality start
Cabrera (3-4) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings, but he took the loss Monday versus the Rockies. Cabrera's last start was cut short by a blister on his right middle finger, but he was able to work past it over the last few days to start on schedule. He pitched fairly well Monday, throwing 51 of 89 pitches for strikes, but it was a sixth-inning solo shot by Elias Diaz that sent Cabrera to his first loss in three starts. The right-hander has completed six frames just twice in his 10 outings this season, posting a 5.05 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 61:31 K:BB over 46.1 innings. That walk rate will continue to put a damper on his other numbers, but he's yet to have a truly disastrous start this year. He's lined up for a road start versus the Angels over the weekend.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Start cut short by blister
Cabrera left Wednesday's win over the Nationals after only 79 pitches due to a blister developing on his right middle finger, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. The right-hander was putting together his best performance of the season, giving up two runs on five hits over five innings with six strikeouts to record his third win. It was the first time in his career Cabrera had lasted at least five innings without walking a batter, making the early exit that much tougher to swallow. He generated 18 swinging strikes, including nine against his changeup. "There were a lot of lefties in the lineup," Cabrera said after the game. "The plan was to attack them with the changeup inside, the curveball outside and the fastball up. That was the plan, and it worked today." Cabrera's next turn in the rotation is set to come early next week in Coors Field, so his fantasy GMs will likely be rooting for the blister to cause the Marlins to skip him, or at least delay his next outing until the team leaves Colorado.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Early exit Wednesday
Cabrera didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks, giving up four runs on two hits and four walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out five. The right-hander was cruising early, blanking Arizona over the first three innings, but Cabrera lost the strike zone in the fourth and walked four of the first five batters he faced before eventually getting the hook after 62 pitches (35 strikes). It's the third time in his last four starts he's issued at least four free passes, and his wavering control continues to hold him back. Despite an impressive 29.9 percent strikeout rate through 35.1 innings, Cabrera's 18.3 percent walk rate has led to a 5.35 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. He'll try to figure things out in his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Nationals.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Fans eight in Friday's loss
Cabrera (2-3) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk over five innings as the Marlins were downed 4-1 by the Cubs. He struck out eight. The right-hander continues to rack up punchouts, as Cabrera generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 95 pitches, but he got little support from the Miami offense. Friday's effort also represented only the second time in seven starts he hasn't walked multiple batters. Cabrera will carry a 4.78 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 44:26 K:BB through 32 innings into his next outing, likely to come next week in Arizona.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Posts career-high 12 strikeouts
Cabrera (2-2) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks over five innings in a 7-6 win over the Cubs. He struck out 12. Cabrera set a career-high in strikeouts Saturday, topping his previous best by three after punching out eight of the final 10 batters he faced. He was tagged for a two-run home run by Patrick Wisdom in the second frame, marking his fourth long ball given up in his last three appearances. Cabrera also couldn't shake his command issues, handing out five free passes Saturday to increase his BB/9 to 8.33 through 27.0 innings. Though he's tough to trust, it's hard to ignore Cabrera's 12.00 K/9, which makes him an intriguing matchup-based streaming option and daily fantasy pick.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Can't contain Atlanta
Cabrera (1-2) took the loss Monday, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks over 4.1 innings during an 11-0 loss to Atlanta. He struck out six. Cabrera posted two scoreless frames to start the game, but he allowed one run in the third, two in the fourth and was pulled in the fifth with a runner on first and one out. The right-hander currently holds a 4.91 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP with a questionable 24:20 K:BB through 22 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Sleeper pitchers for Week 5 (April 24-30)
We've seen a number of pitcher fakeouts this year, but Edward Cabrera's rough patches have resulted from him shooting himself in the foot with walks. He got things under control last time and piled up 21 whiffs, which makes for exciting upside in a two-start week, even with tough matchups.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Possible waiver wire pickups
One of the great frustrations of 2023 so far is how two-faced every pitcher has been, almost like the shift ban or some other change to the environment has dialed up the volatility such that every shaky start has the potential to spiral out of control. But Cabrera's wounds have been self-inflicted -- i.e., issuing a combined 13 walks in his first two starts. He showed us the other side of the coin Wednesday, piling up 21 swinging strikes in a quality start against the Giants. He leaned heavily on his changeup, throwing it 47 percent of the time, and fading his fastball may help to keep him under control. As many whiffs as his changeup and curveball are capable of generating, the control hurdle is the only one he needs to clear... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Earns first win
Cabrera (1-1) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings against San Francisco. He struck out eight. Cabrera was excellent after surrendering a two-run home run to Mike Yastrzemski in the first inning, blanking the Giants over his final five frames while allowing just three hits. The 25-year-old Cabrera has issued just three walks in his last two starts after walking 13 in his first two outings. He lowers his ERA to 4.08 with a 1.75 WHIP and 18:16 K:BB through 17.2 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Sharpens control in no-decision
Cabrera didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Phillies, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. After issuing 13 free passes in only 6.2 innings over his first two starts of the season, Cabrera had a much better command of the strike zone in this one, tossing 50 of 82 pitches for strikes. The 24-year-old right-hander still has a 4.63 ERA, but Wednesday's improvement should keep him in the Marlins' rotation as the team doesn't have many other options for his spot at the moment. Cabrera will attempt to take another step forward when he next takes the mound, likely early next week at home against the Giants.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Can't find plate Friday
Cabrera (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 9-3 by the Mets, giving up two runs on zero hits and seven walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out four. The right-hander issued one free pass in the first inning and two in the second, but he managed to keep those baserunners from scoring before his control completely deserted him in the third. All told, Cabrera threw only 47 of 85 pitches for strikes, and he's now failed to last more than four innings in either of his first two starts of the year. If Braxton Garrett pitches well while filling in for Johnny Cueto (biceps) in the Marlins' rotation, Cabrera could find himself bumped to the bullpen or to Triple-A if he doesn't turn things around quickly.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Next outing pushed back
Cabrera will not make his start against the Mets as scheduled Thursday after the game was postponed, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Major storms are expected on the East Coast, so the game will be pushed back a day to Friday. Presumably, Cabrera will take the ball that day instead, going up against Tylor Megill.... See More ... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Hands out six free passes
Cabrera did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits and six walks over four innings in a 6-2 loss to the Mets. He struck out two. Only 40 of Cabrera's 85 pitches went for strikes. He fell behind in the count initially to 10 of the 20 batters he faced. It was an afternoon to forget for Cabrera after he generated additional buzz in the Grapefruit League (1.80, 0.93 WHIP, 14:6 K:BB in 15 innings). He showed real potential across 14 starts last season, but until he reins in his control, Cabrera has to be considered a volatile fantasy option. The 24-year-old lines up for a road start against these same Mets next week.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Starting third game of season
Cabrera will be included in the Marlins' Opening Day rotation and is in line to start the team's third game of the season Saturday versus the Mets at LoanDepot Park, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Assuming the Marlins open the season with a five-man rotation, Cabrera looks to have secured the final spot over Braxton Garrett, who is projected to work out of the bullpen until a starting role reopens. Cabrera brings plenty of strikeout upside to the table while leaning on an arsenal that includes a mid-to-high 90s fastball and a low-90s changeup that proved particularly deadly against lefties a season ago, but poor health and high walk and home-run rates have thus far hindered the 24-year-old right-hander in his efforts to establish himself as a full-time starter in the big leagues. He appeared to take significant steps forward late last season and has carried over that success to the spring, making him an appealing target in the middle to later rounds of drafts for any fantasy pitching staff.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Favorite to win fifth starter job
Cabrera appears to be the favorite to win the final spot in the Miami rotation, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers and Johnny Cueto will make up the top four starters for the Marlins. The battle is between Cabrera and Braxton Garrett, and Cabrera appears to have the edge after his strong showing in spring training. The fact that Garrett has a minor-league option remaining also tips the scales in Cabrera's favor. Once considered among the very best pitching prospects in baseball, Cabrera has a chance for fantasy relevancy because of his swing-and-miss arsenal, but managers should take a wait-and-see approach before investing too much in the right-hander.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Might be squeezed out of rotation
Cabrera could be fighting with Braxton Garrett for the final spot in the Marlins' Opening Day rotation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The offseason addition of Johnny Cueto could push a younger pitcher to Triple-A Jacksonville, although the team is also considering a six-man rotation. Cabrera was very impressive at times in 2022, riding his 96 mph fastball and nasty changeup to a 25.8 percent strikeout rate and 13.7 percent swinging strike rate, but the 24-year-old righty's 11.3 percent walk rate over 71.2 big-league innings indicates he could perhaps use some additional development time at Triple-A.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Placed on 15-day IL
Cabrera was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right ankle sprain Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Cabrera was removed from Saturday's game against the Brewers due to an ankle injury, and he'll close out the season on the injured list. The right-hander wasn't expected to make any more appearances in 2022, and it seems unlikely that his injury will impact his availability for spring training in 2023. Elieser Hernandez was called up to provide a fresh arm for the Marlins during the team's final series of the regular season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Ready to pitch Saturday
Cabrera (ankle) is listed as the Marlins' probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Milwaukee. Cabrera's inclusion on the Marlins' upcoming pitching schedule suggests that the strained right ankle he sustained in his last outing Sunday against the Nationals isn't anything too worrisome. The right-hander wrapped up September with a 2-2 record, 4.38 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB across 24.2 innings over his five starts.... See More ... See Less
