Player Outlook
Pitching for his 5th team over the last four seasons, Joel Payamps unexpectedly broke out in 2023. Milwaukee acquired the 29-year-old from Oakland last December and gave him a spot in their Opening Day bullpen. Payamps secured his first career save early in the season and had an impressive 25:4 K:BB ratio over his first 22 innings. By mid-May, he jumped into a setup role that he'd settle into over the remainder of the season. Payamps showcased an improved walk rate (5.9%) and strikeout rate (26.8%) that spiked nearly 10 percent from prior outputs. After recording a career-high 28 holds (T-5th in the league), the right-hander figures to open 2024 in a high-leverage role for the Brewers. However, he's somewhat risky for leagues that count holds, as his ratios could plummet if his slider doesn't hold up.

  • Brewers' Joel Payamps: Notches second save

Payamps retired all three batters he faced in Wednesday's 1-0 win against San Diego to earn the save. He did not record a strikeout. It's the second save of the season for Payamps but his first since March 31. Abner Uribe appeared to have a decent grip on the closer role but has worked earlier in games recently -- including the eighth inning Wednesday -- opening the door for Payamps to receive another save chance. The pair could split the ninth inning going forward, but the closing situation in Milwaukee hardly seems settled.

  • Brewers' Joel Payamps: Picks up first save

Payamps earned the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Mets, retiring all three batters he faced with one strikeout in the ninth inning. The 28-year-old notched a hold with a scoreless eighth inning Opening Day while Abner Uribe secured a save, but Uribe wasn't used Sunday after throwing the previous two days. Uribe already has two saves this season and appears to be manager Pat Murphy's first option for the ninth inning, but Payamps remains firmly in the mix for now, though it is too early to declare this closing situation settled.

  • Brewers' Joel Payamps: May be in line for saves

Payamps could receive a large share of Milwaukee's save opportunities to begin the season with Devin Williams (back) set to miss the next three months, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Two stress fractures in Williams' back will keep him sidelined until June, opening the door for Payamps to step in as the Brewers' closer. Payamps turned in impressive numbers as a setup man during his first season in Milwaukee, putting up a 2.55 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 70.2 innings while registering three saves and 28 holds. However, he began to fall apart near the end of the season, surrendering seven runs (six earned) over 9.1 frames after Sept. 1. Payamps' struggles have followed him into spring training, and it's possible the Brewers decide to split save opportunities between Payamps and promising young flamethrower Abner Uribe.

Payamps had one strikeout and didn't allow a baserunner during a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Pirates. The 29-year-old picked up his second save of the season Saturday, as manager Craig Counsell opted to stay away from closer Devin Williams after his busy finish to June. Payamps has earned his way into the setup job for the Brewers and has 15 holds with a 2.11 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB over 38.1 innings, and he hasn't given up an earned run in his past eight outings.

  • Brewers' Joel Payamps: Jumps into setup role

Payamps tossed a scoreless eighth inning and picked up a hold in Tuesday's 7-5 victory over the Diamondbacks. Payamps worked the eighth inning just once all season prior to June 13, but with Peter Strzelecki going through a rough patch and Matt Bush (shoulder) on the injured list, manager Craig Counsell used Payamps in the setup spot that night and twice since. Payamps has allowed five runners to reach base over the three frames he has worked in front of closer Devin Williams, but he also kept the opponent off the scoreboard all three times. As such, expect Payamps to get the ball next time the Brewers need to protect a tight lead in the eighth.
