Payamps retired all three batters he faced in Wednesday's 1-0 win against San Diego to earn the save. He did not record a strikeout. It's the second save of the season for Payamps but his first since March 31. Abner Uribe appeared to have a decent grip on the closer role but has worked earlier in games recently -- including the eighth inning Wednesday -- opening the door for Payamps to receive another save chance. The pair could split the ninth inning going forward, but the closing situation in Milwaukee hardly seems settled.... See More ... See Less

Brewers' Joel Payamps: Picks up first save
Payamps earned the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Mets, retiring all three batters he faced with one strikeout in the ninth inning. The 28-year-old notched a hold with a scoreless eighth inning Opening Day while Abner Uribe secured a save, but Uribe wasn't used Sunday after throwing the previous two days. Uribe already has two saves this season and appears to be manager Pat Murphy's first option for the ninth inning, but Payamps remains firmly in the mix for now, though it is too early to declare this closing situation settled.... Brewers' Joel Payamps: May be in line for saves
Payamps could receive a large share of Milwaukee's save opportunities to begin the season with Devin Williams (back) set to miss the next three months, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Two stress fractures in Williams' back will keep him sidelined until June, opening the door for Payamps to step in as the Brewers' closer. Payamps turned in impressive numbers as a setup man during his first season in Milwaukee, putting up a 2.55 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 70.2 innings while registering three saves and 28 holds. However, he began to fall apart near the end of the season, surrendering seven runs (six earned) over 9.1 frames after Sept. 1. Payamps' struggles have followed him into spring training, and it's possible the Brewers decide to split save opportunities between Payamps and promising young flamethrower Abner Uribe.... Brewers' Joel Payamps: Avoids arbitration
Payamps agreed to a one-year deal with the Brewers on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Payamps, a 29-year-old righty, emerged as the Brewers' top setup man for stretches of last season. He logged a 2.55 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 70.2 innings while also chipping in seven wins and three saves.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Joel Payamps: Takes second loss
Payamps (4-2) took the loss in Sunday's 8-6 loss against Atlanta. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two over an inning. Payamps saw his 19-inning scoreless streak end on Matt Olson's two-run homer in the eighth inning Sunday, tagging the right-hander with his second loss of the year. Payamps had pitched to a pristine 0.58 WHIP during his 18-game streak, striking out 22 in that span. He still sports an impressive 2.01 ERA with a 0.89 WHIP and 57:8 K:BB across 49.1 innings this season while serving as Milwaukee's primary set-up option ahead of Devin Williams.... See More ... Brewers' Joel Payamps: Picks up fourth win
Payamps tossed a scoreless eighth inning and picked up his fourth win of the season in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Atlanta. Payamps entered Saturday's contest with the two teams knotted on the scoreboard, and he wound up with the win after the Brewers plated a run in the bottom of the eighth and prevented Atlanta from doing any further scoring. Payamps has been on a major roll of late, tossing 15 straight scoreless appearances and posting a 0.50 WHIP and 21:2 K:BB in 16.0 innings over that span. He is locked into the setup spot in front of closer Devin Williams.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Joel Payamps: Secures second save
Payamps had one strikeout and didn't allow a baserunner during a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Pirates. The 29-year-old picked up his second save of the season Saturday, as manager Craig Counsell opted to stay away from closer Devin Williams after his busy finish to June. Payamps has earned his way into the setup job for the Brewers and has 15 holds with a 2.11 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB over 38.1 innings, and he hasn't given up an earned run in his past eight outings.... Brewers' Joel Payamps: Jumps into setup role
Payamps tossed a scoreless eighth inning and picked up a hold in Tuesday's 7-5 victory over the Diamondbacks. Payamps worked the eighth inning just once all season prior to June 13, but with Peter Strzelecki going through a rough patch and Matt Bush (shoulder) on the injured list, manager Craig Counsell used Payamps in the setup spot that night and twice since. Payamps has allowed five runners to reach base over the three frames he has worked in front of closer Devin Williams, but he also kept the opponent off the scoreboard all three times. As such, expect Payamps to get the ball next time the Brewers need to protect a tight lead in the eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Joel Payamps: Picks up second win
Payamps tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win in Tuesday's victory over the Cardinals. He allowed two hits and posted a 4:1 K:BB in the outing. The Brewers were forced to extend their bullpen after starter Wade Miley (lat) left the game in the second inning, and Payamps was summoned in the fifth frame for the first time all season. He kept the opponent off the scoreboard, and when the Brewers took the lead in the top of the sixth, Payamps was put in position to pick up his second win of the season. He has been about as effective as can be of late, posting a 1.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB in 12 innings over his last 10 appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Joel Payamps: Breaks camp with Brewers
Payamps, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, secured a spot on the Brewers' Opening Day roster. Payamps was not sharp during the spring, allowing five earned runs over 5.1 innings, but he is out of options and the Brewers want to take a longer look at him after acquiring him from the A's over the offseason. He figures to open in a low-leverage role.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Joel Payamps: Dealt to Brewers
The Brewers acquired Payamps from Oakland on Monday in a three-team deal with Atlanta, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Monday's trade also involved Sean Murphy to Atlanta and William Contreras to Milwaukee, among other components. Payamps was an effective reliever in 2022, posting a 3.23 ERA and 41:16 K:BB in 55.2 innings between Kansas City and Oakland. He figures to handle low-leverage work in the Brewers' bullpen in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Joel Payamps: Charged with fifth loss Tuesday
Payamps (3-5) took the loss against the Rangers on Tuesday, allowing a game-winning solo home run over one-third of an inning. Payamps' blink-and-you-missed-it ninth-inning appearance began with a Marcus Semien pop fly but quickly ended when he served up a 395-foot solo shot to Mark Mathias to snap a 7-7 tie and send the Rangers home winners. Payamps' stumble notwithstanding, the right-hander has been mostly reliable since joining the Athletics off waivers Aug. 20, posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and two holds across 10 appearances.... Payamps, just activated Monday after being claimed off waivers Saturday, fired two scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts in a loss to the Marlins on Tuesday. Payamps labored some, needing a total of 39 pitches to record his six outs. The 28-year-old is highly capable of handling multi-inning assignments such as Tuesday's on a regular basis, having averaged well over one frame per relief appearance during his 29 outings with the Royals prior to his release.... Royals' Joel Payamps: Handed loss in return
Payamps (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two over 1.1 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Tigers. Payamps pitched the eighth inning and stayed in the contest, giving him a chance at a two-inning save. That backfired when he allowed back-to-back solo shots to Victor Reyes and Riley Greene, the latter being a walkoff homer. It was a rude welcome back for Payamps after he spent nearly three weeks on the COVID-19 injured list. The 28-year-old has a 2.96 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB through 27.1 innings this year, pitching mainly in a low-leverage role. The homers he allowed Saturday were the first two he's given up all year after yielding six long balls in 50.1 innings last season.... See More ... See Less
