Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Will continue to get regular reps
The Cardinals will look to continue giving Herrera consistent playing time even after Willson Contreras (hand) is available to catch, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Contreras hopes to be able to catch this weekend in Arizona after missing four games and then being limited to designated hitter duty in the last two contests. With Lars Nootbaar (ribs) also due back Friday, it creates a bit of a playing time logjam for the Cards. Herrera, though, has earned regular reps, putting up an .875 OPS with three homers and seven RBI in nine games. The 23-year-old should continue to be worth using as a second fantasy catcher as long as he's getting at-bats.

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers again Wednesday
Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies.
Herrera got the Cardinals on the board with his second-inning homer. He's gone deep twice over the last three games and now has three homers, seven RBI and six runs scored across 34 plate appearances. As long as Willson Contreras (hand) continues to be unable to catch, Herrera is in line for a larger role behind the dish.

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swats second homer
Herrera went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Monday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Phillies.
Herrera has gotten an extended run of playing time while Willson Contreras (hand) remains out of the lineup. Over his last five contests, Herrera has gone 7-for-20 with two homers and four RBI. The 23-year-old gives the Cardinals another option for the designated hitter spot when the team is at full health, and he may force his way into the lineup even Contreras is healthy if he continues to hit well.

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers in comeback win
Herrera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI single and additional run scored in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Marlins.
Herrera opened the scoring in the second inning with his homer, and his other hit sparked the Cardinals' five-run rally in the seventh inning. The catcher is filling in while Willson Contreras (hand) is unavailable. This was Herrera's second multi-hit effort in a row, and he's now 4-for-12 with four RBI and two runs scored over four contests this season. He's also yet to draw a walk while striking out five times, so there's still room for improvement with plate discipline.

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Steps in for injured Contreras
Herrera will start at catcher and bat cleanup in Thursday's game against the Marlins.
Herrera will pick up his second straight start behind the plate in Thursday's home opener. Both Herrera and top backstop Willson Contreras -- who served as the Cardinals' designated hitter -- were included in the lineup in Wednesday's loss to the Padres, but Contreras was hit by a pitch in left hand during the contest and is dealing with swelling a day later. Contreras is scheduled to undergo X-rays later Thursday as the Cardinals look to assess whether he's dealing with anything more than inflammation and soreness. For now, Contreras is being viewed as day-to-day, but Herrera could be in line for an extended run as the Cardinals' primary catcher if Contreras' injury is significant enough to force him to the injured list.

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Returns to lineup
Herrera (shoulder) is starting at catcher and batting seventh for the Cardinals on Tuesday against the Twins in his return to Grapefruit League action, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Herrera missed a few days with a "stinger" in his left (non-throwing) shoulder but is ready to roll now. He will open the season as Willson Contreras' backup at catcher.

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Managing shoulder issue
Herrera isn't starting Sunday's spring game against the Marlins as scheduled due to shoulder pain, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The 23-year-old has just 24 big-league games under his belt but is poised to share catching duties with Willson Contreras in 2024. It's unclear at this point if the injury is expected to affect Herrera's availability for Opening Day.
