Patrick Bailey slashed an uninspiring .225/.342/.419 at the High-A level in 2022 and entered the 2023 campaign behind Joey Bart and Roberto Perez, among others, on the Giants' catching depth chart. Needless to say, he didn't really seem to be on the fantasy radar heading into last season. As it turned out, he was promoted before the end of May and made a terrific first impression in batting .322/.347/.557 with five homers over his first 33 major-league contests. Although he continued to provide excellent defense, Bailey crashed hard at the plate the rest of the way with a .503 OPS and 29.1 percent strikeout rate from July on. A 10 percent barrel rate was nice to see, but Bailey's strikeout and walk rates were both in the 17th percentile and the switch-hitter sported just a .557 OPS against righties. His defense should provide job security, but Bailey should be reserved only for two-catcher leagues in fantasy.

Bailey is absent from the lineup for Monday's contest versus the Mets. It looks to be a routine day off for the Giants' top catcher. Tom Murphy will be behind the plate Monday.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Homers, doubles twice Saturday

Bailey went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run home run in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks. It's the second time in Bailey's relatively brief big-league career that he's tallied three extra-base hits in one game, as he had two doubles and a triple in a contest last June in Colorado. The four hits also tied a career high, as he did it once before last May in Milwaukee. Bailey's home run Saturday was a 407-foot shot which found McCovey Cove beyond the right-field stands.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Picks up first steal

Bailey went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Marlins. Bailey's steal was his first of 2024, matching his total from 97 contests in 2023. As a catcher, speed is often not high on the list of priorities. He's cooled off after posting three multi-hit efforts over his first five games this season, but Bailey is still batting .286 with a .765 OPS, one home run, four RBI, three runs scored and two doubles over 51 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Resting Sunday

Bailey is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Bailey had caught both of the Giants' previous two contests, so he's likely just getting a maintenance day for the series finale. Tom Murphy will step in behind the dish in Bailey's stead.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Goes deep in loss

Bailey went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers. Bailey accounted for two of San Francisco's five hits in the contest, and he produced the team's first run with his solo shot in the third inning. The backstop has collected multiple hits in three of his five games so far and is slashing .375/.444/.563 through 19 plate appearances. Bailey is locked in as the Giants' primary backstop, but he'll need to show a longer run of offensive success to make more than a ripple in fantasy circles after he slashed just .233/.285/.359 with a 28.3 percent strikeout rate over 353 plate appearances as a rookie last year.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Gets Monday off

Bailey isn't in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Bailey has collected two hits in two of his first three games of the season, but he'll get a breather in the first game of the series against LA unless he's called upon to pinch hit. Tom Murphy draws the start behind the dish and will bat sixth in Bailey's place.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Day-to-day with hand injury

Manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Bailey (hand) will be unavailable to play for a few days, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Bailey avoided any fractures when he took a foul ball off his right hand in Cactus League action Tuesday, but he's dealing with some swelling and discoloration and is unable to make a fist. He'll undergo treatment and will rest a bit before returning to spring games.

Bailey is out of the lineup Friday against the Dodgers. Blake Sabol will catch and bat eighth for the Giants. Bailey has enjoyed some promising stretches this season, but the 24-year-old is slashing just .127/.172/.146 with 21 strikeouts in 58 plate appearances since the beginning of September.

Bailey was activated from the 7-day concussion injured list Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Joey Bart was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Taking seat Friday

Bailey is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest against Atlanta, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Atlanta is starting Spencer Strider, so Bailey probably didn't put up too much of a fight when he was told he was getting a day off. Blake Sabol will do the catching for Logan Webb.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Delivers go-ahead knock

Bailey went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, three RBI and a run scored in Monday's 8-3 win over the Angels. Bailey opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning and added a two-run double in the ninth to put the Giants ahead for good. This was his fourth multi-hit effort in his last seven games, a span in which he's gone 7-for-21 (.333). The rookie catcher continues to impress defensively while holding his own with a .262/.307/.414 slash line, five home runs, 35 RBI, 19 runs scored, 15 doubles and a stolen base through 61 contests this season.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Resting Saturday

Bailey will be on the bench Saturday against the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Bailey burst onto the scene with a .904 OPS in his first 33 games, but he's hit a wall since the start of July. In 14 games this month, he's hitting .125/.176/.167 with 17 strikeouts and just one walk. Blake Sabol starts behind the plate for the fourth time in nine games since the All-Star break.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Notches first big-league steal

Bailey went 1-for-5 with one RBI, a stolen base and one run scored in Friday's 6-4 win over the Pirates. Bailey was effective on both sides of the stolen-base equation Friday, as he also threw out Tucupita Marcano in the third inning. Bailey's theft was the first in his career, and as a catcher, he shouldn't be expected to run frequently. He's also slashing .290/.320/.483 with five home runs, 27 RBI, 15 runs scored, 11 doubles and a triple over 41 contests, though he's hitting a light .167 in July.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Belts go-ahead homer

Bailey went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Friday's win against the Mets. Bailey's eighth-inning shot gave the Giants the late lead. He's gone 11-for-29 (.379) with five extra-base hits and six RBI over his last eight games. The rookie catcher is now slashing .322/.347/.557 with five homers in 33 career MLB games.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Mashes fourth homer

Bailey went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Friday's 8-5 win over the Diamondbacks. Bailey is off to a good start since getting called up to the big leagues May 19. The 2020 first-round pick is slashing .330/.361/.560 so far, and he is quickly proving to be a worthy fantasy option. His four total homers aren't eye-popping, but his contact hitting has been excellent, as he has hits in 10 of his 15 contests.
