Player Outlook
The Mariners acquired Jose Caballero from the Diamondbacks for Mike Leake in the summer of 2019, and he wasn't considered a top prospect coming into the 2023 season. He earned an early shot with Seattle, and while there were just as many ups as there were downs, he was able to remain a key cog on the bench for the majority of the year. He was much more effective against southpaws than he was right-handed pitching; finishing with an OPS of .758 against left-handed pitching compared to a .588 mark against righties. He showed virtually no power against hurlers from either side, however, and his on-base percentage was strongly boosted by being hit 17 times in 280 plate appearances. Even if Caballero is able to cement a spot in the Seattle lineup next summer, it's hard to imagine him helping fantasy rosters outside of the steals category in 2024.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Smacks second homer

Caballero went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Monday against the Tigers. Caballero has made his mark with seven stolen bases across his first 22 games this season. However, he swatted his second homer of the campaign against Shelby Miller in the eighth inning, and he now has an extra-base hit in each of his last three games. Caballero has a clear path to playing time for the foreseeable future, as Taylor Walls (hip) has been shut down from baseball activities and is ineligible to return from the injured list until late May.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Tallies seventh stolen base

Caballero went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base Saturday against the Yankees. Caballero continues to impress as the Rays' primary shortstop, as he now has at least one hit in four of his last five games while hitting .288 for the season. Though he doesn't offer much in terms of power, Caballero has been very aggressive on the basepaths with seven stolen bases on the season while being caught three times. With Taylor Walls out until at least late May, Caballero has a clear runway for consistent playing time.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Pops first homer of season

Caballero went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Angels. The shortstop took Jose Soriano deep to lead off the second inning, giving Tampa Bay its final run of the game. It was Caballero's first long ball of 2024, but he's had a blistering start to the campaign at the plate, batting .351 (13-for-37) through 11 games with three doubles, five steals, six RBI and seven runs in addition to Wednesday's homer.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Collects three hits, steals base

Caballero went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and a stolen base Tuesday against the Angels. Caballero's impressive start at the plate continued Tuesday, as he tallied his third-career three-hit game. The shortstop has now reached safely in all 10 games in which he's appeared this season and boasts a .353/.378/.441 slash line with six runs scored, five RBI and five stolen bases.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Idle Saturday

Caballero isn't in the Rays' lineup for Saturday's game versus Colorado, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Caballero has registered a base hit in six of the seven games he's played in this year, and he'll now catch a day off. Amed Rosario will get a chance to start at shortstop Saturday while batting seventh.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Taking seat on Monday

Caballero is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. Caballero started all four contests in the Rays' season-opening series with the Blue Jays and reached base six times, but he'll receive a day off Monday. Amed Rosario will start at shortstop and bat cleanup in place of Caballero.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Strong start to time with Rays

Caballero went 1-for-3 with a stolen base Sunday against the Blue Jays. Caballero has opened the season as the Rays' starting shortstop in the absence of Taylor Walls (hip) and has performed well. He has at least one hit in all four games and has also scored twice while driving in three. Caballero also swiped his first base of the campaign after stealing 26 bags in only 280 plate appearances in 2023.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Working on pulling flyballs

Rays manager Kevin Cash said recently that hitting coach Chad Mottola has been working with Caballero on pulling the ball in the air, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old had a recent batting practice that featured a handful of wind-aided homers, with Cash saying afterward of the approach that Caballero is "letting it loose" and "seems to be taking to that." Caballero hit just four home runs in 104 games last season with the Mariners and has never gone deep more than nine times in any professional season. However, the Rays have been able to squeeze the most out of players with limited power before with a pull-heavy approach, most recently with Isaac Paredes. Caballero -- who is expected to be Tampa Bay's Opening Day shortstop -- could boost his draft stock if he shows a power uptick this spring.

  • Rays' Jose Caballero: Likely to open at shortstop

Caballero is likely to be the Rays' Opening Day shortstop, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. Things could always change if the Rays make further additions, of course, but as things stand right now, Caballero appears to be the favorite to man shortstop in the opener. Acquired earlier this month in a trade with the Mariners, Caballero slashed .221/.343/.320 with four homers and 26 stolen bases over 104 contests in 2023. The 27-year-old could just be keeping the seat warm until Junior Caminero is ready.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Swipes two bags off bench

Caballero walked, scored a run and stole a pair of bases in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the White Sox. Caballero drew a walk as a pinch hitter for Dominic Canzone to lead off the seventh inning. He'd go on to steal both second and third base before scoring the Mariners' first run on a Josh Rojas bunt single. The 26-year-old Caballero hasn't started since Saturday, though he's come off the bench in three straight games. He's now logged five steals in his last eight contests, improving to 25-for-28 in stolen base attempts this season while slashing .240/.371/.340 with three homers, 33 runs scored and 24 RBI across 248 plate appearances in his rookie campaign.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Takes seat Sunday

Caballero is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Caballero started the past five games at shortstop and will head to the bench after going 7-for-18 with three doubles, three steals, an RBI and five runs during that span. Dylan Moore is starting at shortstop Sunday, but both players' playing time at the position will dwindle in the near future with J.P. Crawford (concussion) on a rehab assignment and close to being activated from the injured list.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Reaches 20-steal mark

Caballero picked up his 20th stolen base of the season as a pinch runner in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Padres. Caballero was out of the lineup for the third game in a row, but he made a small impact off the bench. The second baseman has five steals since the All-Star break and 20 for the season. He's slashing .222/.349/.318 through 215 plate appearances, though it appears a combination of Dylan Moore and Josh Rojas will keep Caballero out of the lineup versus virtually all right-handed pitchers going forward.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Collects 19th steal

Caballero went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in Friday's 9-7 win over the Angels. Caballero's at-bats remain limited, but he's gone 3-for-13 (.231) with four steals over his last eight games. The second baseman had a window to gain playing time after Kolten Wong was designated for assignment, but it's been Josh Rojas and Dylan Moore who have instead picked up most of the extra work at the keystone. Caballero is slashing .227/.352/.326 with 19 steals, three home runs, 21 RBI and 27 runs scored over 210 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Picks up steal Friday

Caballero went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Caballero was in the lineup for the first time in a week, and he has picked up just one at-bat during that stretch of riding pine. The second baseman has again lost out on playing time to Kolten Wong, and it appears Dylan Moore has also passed Caballero on the depth chart. Nonetheless, Caballero offers some speed -- he has six steals over 14 contests in July, and he's up to 17 thefts on the year. He's added a middling .224/.351/.327 slash line over 202 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: On bench Wednesday

Caballero is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against Minnesota, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Caballero will remain on the bench for a fourth consecutive contest Wednesday as he appears to have lost his starting job to Kolten Wong. Wong will take over at second base and bat ninth in the series finale with the Twins.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Playing time slipping

Caballero is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. The 26-year-old made a string of six straight starts from June 11-17, but Kolten Wong, who is starting Sunday, has since reclaimed primary duties at second base with 13 starts in 20 games. Caballero had an .825 OPS in his first 25 games of the season but has struggled to a .619 OPS over the past six weeks.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Two steals off bench Monday

Caballero recorded two stolen bases and scored one run in Monday's 6-5 win over the Giants. Caballero ran for Mike Ford in the ninth inning and proceeded to steal second and third before scoring on a J.P. Crawford sacrifice fly. He's been on the bench to begin two of the Mariners' three games in July, so it appears Caballero's playing time could be on the decline. Caballero is 13-for-15 on the basepaths while adding three home runs, 19 RBI, 20 runs scored and .239/.375/.358 slash line through 54 contests.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Belts third homer in loss

Caballero went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday. The only offense of the day for the Mariners in the 4-1 loss came from the No. 9 spot in the order, underscoring the extent of the team's offensive struggles. Caballero's eighth-inning solo shot marked the rookie's first time leaving the yard since he slugged homers in back-to-back games May 21 and May 22, and he's now hit safely in five of his last six starts.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Hits bench Saturday

Caballero is not in Saturday's lineup against the Orioles. Caballero had drawn four consecutive starts but will get a day off Saturday. Kolten Wong is taking over at second base while hitting ninth.

  • Mariners' Jose Caballero: Busy night on basepaths

Caballero went 1-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Orioles on Friday. While several other teammates put together much more sensational stat lines in the Mariners' 13-1 win, Caballero was effective with a small-ball approach out of the bottom of the order. The rookie's steal was his 11th of the season, while the three times he reached safely pushed his on-base percentage to a stellar .377. Caballero has also reached safely in four of his last five games, although he has just one extra-base hit, a double, over that span.
