Player Outlook
The Mariners acquired Jose Caballero from the Diamondbacks for Mike Leake in the summer of 2019, and he wasn't considered a top prospect coming into the 2023 season. He earned an early shot with Seattle, and while there were just as many ups as there were downs, he was able to remain a key cog on the bench for the majority of the year. He was much more effective against southpaws than he was right-handed pitching; finishing with an OPS of .758 against left-handed pitching compared to a .588 mark against righties. He showed virtually no power against hurlers from either side, however, and his on-base percentage was strongly boosted by being hit 17 times in 280 plate appearances. Even if Caballero is able to cement a spot in the Seattle lineup next summer, it's hard to imagine him helping fantasy rosters outside of the steals category in 2024.

However, he swatted his second homer of the campaign against Shelby Miller in the eighth inning, and he now has an extra-base hit in each of his last three games. Caballero has a clear path to playing time for the foreseeable future, as Taylor Walls (hip) has been shut down from baseball activities and is ineligible to return from the injured list until late May.

    Rays manager Kevin Cash said recently that hitting coach Chad Mottola has been working with Caballero on pulling the ball in the air, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old had a recent batting practice that featured a handful of wind-aided homers, with Cash saying afterward of the approach that Caballero is "letting it loose" and "seems to be taking to that." Caballero hit just four home runs in 104 games last season with the Mariners and has never gone deep more than nine times in any professional season. However, the Rays have been able to squeeze the most out of players with limited power before with a pull-heavy approach, most recently with Isaac Paredes. Caballero -- who is expected to be Tampa Bay's Opening Day shortstop -- could boost his draft stock if he shows a power uptick this spring.
