Padres' Luis Campusano: Out two months after thumb surgery

Campusano underwent ligament surgery on his left thumb Friday and he'll be out at least two months, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Campusano will likely now be held out until after the All-Star break. The backstop appeared to be making progress after catching for pitchers last weekend, but ultimately the Padres felt the best course was to have him undergo surgery now. With Campusano out, Austin Nola and Brett Sullivan will continue to share catching duties.

It's a significant step forward for Campusano, who has been on the shelf since mid-April because of a left thumb sprain. He was cleared to start swinging a bat earlier this week and seems to be tracking toward a return to the Padres sometime in mid-May. Campusano landed on the 10-day injured list April 17 as a result of spraining his thumb while catching a bullpen session. Though X-rays came back negative, the Padres are being cautious and waiting until the thumb is close to 100 percent before allowing Campusano to resume catching, according to manager Bob Melvin. Campusano is eligible to come off the IL on April 27, but it appears unlikely that he'll be ready to return by then.

The backstop struggled during his time with the Padres earlier in the campaign, going 3-for-34 with a 28.9 percent strikeout rate. However, he's thrived in his first stint at the Triple-A level and just completed a superb August during which he slashed .373/.458/.765 with six homers and 13 RBI across 15 contests. Campusano was the California League co-MVP in 2019 and remains firmly embedded as one of the organization's top hitting prospects. He's unlikely to make much of an impact at the big-league level this season with Austin Nola and Victor Caratini holding down catcher duties while the Padres fight for a playoff spot, but Campusano could have a future as the team's top backstop.
